FRANKIE OTERO RIP

Post by enrique »

Former NABF Super Featherweight Champion and rated number one lightweight contender Frankie Otero (49-9-2 with 31 KO) passed away from bone cancer at the age of 72. Born in Cuba and raised in Hialeah, the very popular “Cuban Bomber” twice fought Ken Buchanan, lost to Alfredo Escalera, defeated Kenny Weldon and former British Commonwealth Champion Love Allotey, and faced quality fighters including Vilomar Fernandez, Jimmy Trosclair, Victor Ortiz, Lorenzo Trujillo and Beau Jaynes. After hanging up the boxing gloves, he was a matchmaker for promoter Walter Alvarez and was also involved in the training of several local Miami fighters, being inducted into the Florida Boxing Hall of Fame. He had a career as a real estate appraiser and broker, was happily married, father of one son and had three grandchildren, one of which, 20-year old Chris Otero is a pro junior middle with a 3-0 record, 2 by KO. RIP.

I regret not having the chance to meet Otero. Hank Kaplan and Jack Kearns Jr. spoke so highly of him. Thanks for posting the news, Enrique.
