Admittedly - Maybe a bit biased.
I had met Dean and the other Bristol boys at a number of shows early on in his career, and when he moved down to supermiddle he was the only one of the UK prospects I seen as a genuine threat to Calzaghe. The 97/98 pre-injury Dean Francis had me convinced he`d beat the 97/98 version of Calzaghe.
We all believed that mate. He’d of stopped Joe without question, and I’m a huge Calzaghe fan.

So a Euro level fighter would have stopped a hall of famer without question? I’ll leave it there.

He did give him fits, and dropped him.... that’s why Cog is getting so upset! And Joe wasn’t a massive underdog against Lacy, he was 11/8, I had a good bet on him. People thought Lacy was the best thing since sliced bread.
100% agree Mickey, just made that point because we both know that the Eubank fan boy/obsessive will come back with the claim that Eubank was past his best then, so just wanted to make it clear that even a peak Eubank couldn't have dealt with JC (who let's not forget was very green and untested when he stepped up to face Eubank).
It’s actually worrying this guy’s obsession with Eubank. I get accused of it with Wharton but I don’t go on like this. And I’m with him most days.
he's a weirdo mate. stalked me over five different threads cos i respectfully called eubank a cherry picker who got a few gifts. had to block him.

Funny how barely a single respected boxing journalist or insider was saying that before the fight. Clearly you have unique gifts of insight

And just to be clear, you only need to read this poll of BS contributors to see the evidence of how seasoned observers rated Lacy:

Gotta feel for Dean's dad, Trevor, to lose his son at the age of 44. Trevor was a fine technician who went one better than Dean by winning an ABA title but Dean went better than his dad by winning British titles at two weights. Trevor, who went in with everyone as a pro, challenged Pat Thomas for the British welterweight title in 1976 but was narrowly outscored over 15 rounds. Sadly, it was a snoozfest.

Are you okay in the head? Your reasoning is a bizarre game of words.

He was clearly world-class, and would’ve beat them all. And Calzaghe was no US ‘hall of famer’ back then because the US didn’t know him.

He’s inducted into the HOF. I don’t want to speak ill of the dead but I can’t remember a world class Francis win?
I’m not right in the head? Please tell me where the stalker like obsession with Eubank is from?

How many did Herol Graham have (I’m guessing ‘world class’ means world title win)? Does that mean he wouldn’t beat 99% of world champions?

Dean’s career was cut short of course. Catley will tell you Francis was the best he was ever in a ring with.

Apparently Mickey1975 knows more than Senior and Catley.

Think what Dean would’ve done to Henry Wharton in 97 - ouch.

He would have got laid out. Eubank said Henry was the hardest man he ever fought, his words, not yours. Great performance by Chris before you start, and Henry will say that himself.

Henry spoke a lot of shit before the fight, so it was nice Karma.

Francis would’ve had a field day. Different class.

No, he didn’t. How on earth would Francis be a different class? I take it you don’t know Eubank as he only says good things about Henry. I’ll have a word with him, see if I can get you an address or something.

Although Reid came close to beating Calzaghe, the only other British or Irish boxer I would give a chance of beating Calzaghe would be Froch.

The late Dean Francis was a terrific boxer. He had every punch in the book, but he liked to work at his own pace and Calzaghe would never have let that happen and terrorised him with blistering two fisted raids.

Joe (and Enzo) would have known he would have needed to be on his game for Francis, and that's a huge compliment to Dean. The amateur win counts too because Joe really dumped Francis hard. Yes, Francis improved of course, but Calzaghe even more so.

I was taken in by Lacy and thought he'd beat Calzaghe, but Joe was simply breath taking that night and skinned him alive :box:

Francis shouldn’t even be brought up! Ronnie Davis himself says Andy Flute is the hardest sparring partner Eubank ever had, and Andy was clubbing every night.

I liked Francis but he was struggling for stamina in more than a few fights and got stopped by Jaffa wotsit. It wasn’t some fluke loss either. He tired late in fights and tended to get hurt and marked up.

I’m struggling to see any sort of scenario where Francis beats Calzaghe, even at his “peak”.

Yeah if you go head to head with mutual opponents he can look “better” ie starie but that’s a really flawed way of looking at it.

Must be true then if Ronnie Davies said it.

Flute was certainly a hard man though.
