i thought he won at least 3 of the rounds and was competitive in all of them. i thought cal (and rhodes etc) lost every round. i think there are more dudes who could take canelo rounds while being a punch bags than there are guys who could be competitive with him even for 6 rounds

Wee Tommy wrote: 22 Dec 2020, 08:11 The Canelo that caught Smith is the best he’s been. Slick, powerful, I’d have hated to be Callum on that night.

Khan got blasted out the second Canelo wanted it over. I can’t quite understand how it can be construed he did the best, when others lasted the distance

Khan gave him ‘fits’
khan won more rounds than the other guys did even fighting longer fights, he was the only one who was actually competitive and hanging with alvarez, landing good shots and even making him miss wildly at times. he did this all fighting a much bigger guy. i dont think alvarez just suddenly decided he was going to end it. he wasnt really pushing all that particularly hard compared to before, he just caught khan and of couurse ol glass chin got creamed

i dont think lasting more rounds but being a totally uncompetitive punch bag and just getting whalloped more is really that impressive

the way i look at it, only one guy managed to box at canelo's level and actually 'hang' with him. that is more of a feat and takes a higher level of performance (fewer guys could do it) than simply taking a beating for longer. and let's be honest, ppl say it was obviously only a matter of time till khan got splatted, but it was obvious the other dudes were gonna lose too
Come on Maggie, you don’t really think Khan was hanging with Canelo, do you? He absolutely wasn’t. He shoeshined him a couple of times, moved fairly well and then bam, KO. Smith took for more punishment against a far better version of Alvarez. It’s a moot point tho really as both got smashed and none actually did well at all.

Matty Hatton dug deeper than any of them.
I agree with TIL - Khan WAS hanging with Canelo.

He had faster hands and feet and was able to nick rounds.
I KNOW that Canelo wasn't bothered because judges would give him the rounds and it was never going to points anyway, but even a past-his-best Khan can (and did) give anyone trouble for a few rounds.

Ryan Rhodes was doing all right in a similar vein - neither could really hurt Canelo enough, but (back then anyway) it's not like either were miles behind in skills or coordination like Smith and Fielding were.

Callum Smith did try to win. But he could have/should have tried harder.

Jesus Christ, I hope I never have to box a pound for pound star. I’d get banged inside 30 seconds then everyone on the internet would tell me I didn’t want it enough.

None of them really gave him problems to be fair. I don’t think they all pissed themselves in fear and should hang their heads in shame though, he’s just that good. For what it’s worth, Callum beats the others on that list handily, and lasted the longest against what was probably the best (juiciest) version of Canelo.

He also threw over 500 punches, that doesn't seem like the actions of someone who didn't want to win.

His landed percentage was low, but the fact his accuracy was so bad speaks volumes of Canelo's subtle defensive movements.

Smith has never been known as a man who swings wildly and is usually very accurate with his shots and usually hurts opponents with a strong combo at some point over twelve rounds.

Canelo, looked super human, both in terms of attributes and in ability. Maybe people should stop kicking Smith while he is down and instead praise Canelo's performance.

Hatton lasted as long.
Magic Matthew admitted that Canelo woulda stopped him with a bit more experience.
He was great that night - dug deep, gave everything and 'old-manned' Canelo to last the distance. It was a magnificent performance, but it wasn't winning anything more than beating Fielding in this competition.

He wouldnae lasted more than a few rounds vs the Canelo that fought Callum.

You’re right Mickey, my bad.

The idea of someone trying to old-man Canelo now is just funny really, but Matthew deserves respect for that fight. He’s lost a Commonwealth eliminator before then, so coming up against a young Alvarez in your only world tilt is hard lines.

Canelo was actually starting to time Khan before the KO, the best one was when he rolled his head a half inch away from Khans lead right then countered with a hook to the body, it actually looked like Khans punch landed the roll was so well timed

I can't see any of our 3 best fighters atm Fury, Taylor and Joshua losing to a American or Mexican anytime soon.

Agree with Fury and Taylor comment but I seen I fat Mexican American make AJ quit.

And the reason he had 1 arm was because of Canelo.

Many a fighter would have given much more than Callum Smith did in those circumstances.

All of these guys got owned by canelo, what’s the point of discussing who did the least badly lol

A very British thread I suppose

despite me thinking he was getting beaten handily and that some people gave way too much credit to air jabbing and herky jerk jiving, the brits have generally done so bad against canelo that he'd have to rate up there

Remember the slow-footed, average hand-speed version who beat Hatton? Amazing how his speed improved exponentially..............

The only Brit to stand a chance against Canelo would be the 1st battalion of the Grenadier Guards and I would bet half of them would report on sick parade on the day of the fight. :oo

Fixed my previous rating:

1. Khan
2. Hatton
3. Saunders
4. Callum
5. Rhodes
6. Liam
7. Fielding

Yeah, still better than Callum, as showed more effort and success through 8 rounds, than Callum through 12.

1) Khan
2)L Smith
3)C Smith
4)Hatton
5)Saunders
6)Rhodes
7) Fielding

BS's "about turn" cost him a higher rating. Hell, I'd say Fielding showed way more fighting spirit, despite being horribly outgunned.

While it lasted only Saunders and Khan were competitive, I had Khan ahead on points.
