Boxing rumors you heard that turned out to be false...
When I was a kid I learned many boxing rumors that were later proven untrue, not so much about fights but about boxers' lives.
The one I remember-because I believed it for decades-the most was that Aaron and Richard Pryor were brothers. It came from Boxing Illustrated I think. I believe they said that soon Aaron was going to be the more famous "brother" or something like that. That led me, living in Puerto Rico and not knowing too much about English slang at age 11, to think Aaron and Richard were indeed siblings.
How about you all? Any rumors you believed which turned out not to be true?

When i was a kid there was a story in Boxing Illustrated (fake one) about the great Sol Nazerman (Bagel-Boy). He had something like 30 straight KO's in places such as Whispering Falls, Tennessee, and Dead Racoon, Arkansas, and he was as big as a house. I bought it hook line and sinker. Found out soon after it was all the 'invention' of Elliot Harvith, publisher of the "underground" American Boxing News. Some other publications started carrying the news about the lad, so Harvith had him killed in a car accident in his next issue. LMFAO! Best prank ever.

Man, I remember that. Some agencies even began rating Sol in their top 10. They even created a 'photo' of him that was published, which was really a man-made pic. When they killed him off, they actually stated that he was the one getting the title shot at Frazier and when he was killed Foreman was signed. Man, they kept this BS going for as long as they could.oogiebe wrote: ↑23 Dec 2020, 23:46 When i was a kid there was a story in Boxing Illustrated (fake one) about the great Sol Nazerman (Bagel-Boy). I seem to remember that in the Boxing Illustrated article that he had a brother, but I can't find anything about that on the web. I'm almost certain of it.scartissue wrote: ↑24 Dec 2020, 11:40Man, I remember that. Some agencies even began rating Sol in their top 10. I believe there was supposed to be two more brothers. I can't recall the next brother but supposedly they had a younger brother just starting out with a 6-0 record with (natch) all 6 by KOs and his name was Moses Nazerman. That's going to bug me now until I remember the middle 'brother'. I remember them all having those very Hebrew names. Some scam!oogiebe wrote: ↑24 Dec 2020, 12:19I seem to remember that in the Boxing Illustrated article that he had a brother, but I can't find anything about that on the web. Rog, there was a dude in Chicago a number of years back claiming to be Johnny Bratton...until they found the real Johnny Bratton. But the best one was a Ring mag correspondent out of West Allis, Wisconsin (I forget his name) who would do bios for the ring on old fighters with an interview. And he met up with former welterweight champ Freddie (Red) Cochrane who was now living in Wisconsin to be near his daughter. It was a terrific piece on Red after all these years. Except for the fact that a few months later the red-faced Ring and writer had to admit they were conned when the real Red Cochrane resurfaced after seeing the article and was still living in Elizabeth, New Jersey.dagosd2000 wrote: ↑24 Dec 2020, 16:25 How about the homeless guy who lived in Santa Ana,Ca. who had people believing he was Bob Satterfield?I heard later they made a movie about him.If my wife ever kicks me out I'll live in the streets and tell everyone I'm Rocky Marciano.![]()

Back in 1938 Archie Moore fought a local Mexican/American middleweight by the name of Johnny "The Bandit" Romero at the Coliseum. Romero won the first fight by decision. The second went Moore's way via TKO.
In 2015 I took my grandson Adam to the fights at The 4 Points Sheraton Hotel in Kearny Mesa.Bobby DiFilippis.a long time local promoter put on the show. Before the main even he steps to center ring and announces that in the makeshift arena there is a San Diego Sports legend-Johnny "The Bandit" Romero the guy who fought Archie Moore..An old guy wearing a cream colored suit stands up a gets a nice hand.Right away my ears perk up.I have my camera with me so II walk over to where he is sitting by the door.Next to him is Bobby D.(Bobby D is what they call DiFilippis)I get their picture.

Funny thing about all this.Romero was born in 1910 and died in 1978.If that was him in that picture that would have made him 105 years old!No wonder Bobby D is giving me a strange look.

I've gone through the story about how Ken Norton broke my nose in a sparring session before you could say Bloody Nose Ridge. To my astonishment there were a few of my friends that thought it was the other way around.Even when I corrected them they still believed I drew Ken Norton's blood.

And ouch..I had a broken nose once....17 year old me got it broken while playing basketball, by my brother who had hit a home run on the adyacent baseball field. the ball landed on my nose and i got to the hospital laughing at myself and the whole incident even as i was in miserable pain because, what were the chances of that happening?
Anyways, yeah, ouch..

I'm not sure if this counts but in the rumble in the jungle, after the first round Ali did nothing but lay on the ropes. I don't know if it's a rumour but it's certainly a story that's pushed even to this day, despite being false.
An entire book could be written on Jack Johnson rumours, unfortunately it's hard separating fact from fiction.
Sonny Liston was 40+ when he fought Ali.
There's always local rumours around fighting etc. It seems a small story gets completely overblown. I remember when I was about 20 I got into a fight with two guys, I had been boxing since I was 12, had plenty of fights both in the ring and on the street, it was over quickly. 6 months later it seemed people that were there swore black and blue that it had been 10 guys who were all 6'5+ 150kgs etc
. Incredible feats fighting prowess that I have no recollection of, they just seem to be made up out of thin air. Being told by a mate remember that time you..... No I don't it never happened, if it did I would have got my ass kicked
I've heard plenty of local ones about local boxers as well, nothing that really sticks out though.
Perhaps the biggest rumour that turned out to be false is Rubin Carter, persecuted because he was a civil rights leader etc. In reality he was a cold blooded murderer. Again I'm not sure if it's a rumour or just a false story. I guess it started as a rumour but got so huge that it became international news.

After Max Schmeling lost the second fight with Joe Louis the German press told the nation that Louis should have been disqualified because he used an "illegal" kidney punch thus Max should have been champion.

Max Schmeling. He never said afterwards that Joe fouled him. When asked about the "kidney" punch he said "Yes Louis hit me in the kidneys(he even cracked one of Max's vertebraes)but that I had turned into the punch and wasn't fouled."Class guy that Schmeling. Ditto Joe Louis.
