Honeygan did a job on him. Excellent performance, he's come over against the odds and fought like he was the favourite to win the fight.

110-1, 82 senior world amateur champion (beating the Russian and Cuban), 84 Olympic gold and something like 80 KOs.

Never really translated to the pro's though, not sure why.

Manny Steward said in 84 that Breland and Errol Christie were the two most talented fighters he’d ever seen.

Christie could cut it. He was the new Randolph Turpin (both Warwickshire boys) when he won the ABA light-middleweight title at Wembley in 1981 in a thrilling contest with Swindon's Cameron "Let's Go" Lithgow, who was vastly experienced and boxed out of his skin but it still wasn't enough as 18-year-old Christie romped to the points in a quite brilliant display. He was clearly destined for greatness and threw one of the best punches I've ever seen against Ireland's Tommy Corr in an international contest in early 1982, screened on Sportsnight. Southpaw Corr threw a right jab in the opening moments, Errol slipped outside it and brought up a left uppercut to the body. Corr's 'grunt' as it landed could be heard in just about every front room in the UK but he shrugged it off and went the full three rounds to lose unanimously. Corr was a good fighter.
Errol was set to be a superstar when he won gold in the European Juniors in the summer of 1982, now up at middleweight. Microchip millionaire Burt McCarthy offered him a fortune to hand in the vest and Christie routinely destroyed his early paid opposition in often chilling fashion. Errol loved the knockouts but there were some decent learning fights in there too, including a couple of wins in the States. Even after Belgian light-heavyweight Jose Seys bowled him over in a matter of seconds in a stupid match in 1984, there was no need to panic. A quick defeat like that wasn't going to harm him. Sadly, the highly strung McCarthy did panic.
All of a sudden, Christie's opposition dropped down to a hapless level. Errol won his next seven fights in just 11 rounds, all against imports. Four of them went out in the first round. Across the promotional divide, Mark Kaylor took on Tony Sibson in a 12-rounder at Wembley for British, Commonwealth and European middleweight titles. The West Hammer was expected to win but Sibbo got his pole of a left jab working and proved there was still life in the Leicester dog with a unanimous but hard-earned decision. Kaylor came back with a couple of a fights, including a bloody 10-rounder against rugged American Dwight "Tiger" Walker at York Hall in June 1985. Kaylor was badly cut and covered in his own blood until manager Terry Lawless had seen enough. With Kaylor sat on his stool between rounds, Lawless gestured to referee Harry Gibbs that he was pulling Mark out. As he did so, the bell rang, Kaylor jumped up, ran past his manager and carried on getting stuck into Walker. That was Kaylor for you, and he won the decision.
The contrast in build-up between Christie and Kaylor was brutally stark prior to their showdown at Wembley on November 5, 1985. Let's not forget, either, Kaylor had already come through a big domestic showdown with Roy Gumbs at a packed Ally Pally in September 1983, climbing up from a heavy fifth-round knockdown to finish Gumbs moments later with a relentless, almost superhuman attack. The inevitable happened again. Christie proved typically dangerous early on but he just wasn't prepared for a man to survive his early onslaughts and fire back, and that's exactly what Kaylor did until a horribly spent Christie, crawling on his hands and knees, was counted out in the eighth round of an unforgettable affair. That finished Christie as a world class prospect because it eroded his punch resistance. He could still beat a feather-dusting light-middleweight like Sean Mannion but became a sitting duck for almost everyone with a bit of clout, including Michael Watson in a shameful match on the Eubank-Benn undercard at the NEC in 1990.
McCarthy, by that stage, was probably ruining another great talent.

And Eubank, on a weekly allowance from Miles before that, was forced to hide in the toilets on the train to Sheffield to embarrass himself against Herol Graham at Wincobank for three weeks for £300 a week, surviving off no food for the first week and a slice of toast a day for the next two (due to Karron expecting Junior and them needing money).
