I remember there were two of them, Burt and Leslie, but Leslie stayed very much in the background and saved a lot of face by doing so. Burt first came to my attention when he reckoned he had signed up Frank Bruno before Terry Lawless and it went all the way to the High Court, with Lawless finally getting the nod. That's why Bruno didn't make his pro debut until 1982, after winning the ABA heavyweight title in 1980 with a close decision over Welsh southpaw Rudi Pika. The eye business in Bogota was a load of old cobblers.
Burt looked after his fighters outside the ring and linked up with promoter F rank Warren so in the ring they had exposure on ITV and title opportunities. Unfortunately, they all wound up losing and McCarthy became something of a joke figure. He didn't know how to 'move' his fighters at the right time and they were good fighters, such as Christie, Andy Straughn and Pat Clinton. He took Straughn to the States (with Christie) but the relaxed, likeable Straughn, who oozed class in the amateurs, kept losing there and it was funny. He took an unbeaten Pat Clinton to Denmark for a shot at the European title against Eyup Can and the Scot looked a million dollars for one round - the first. Can then got serious and dominated the next 11. Again it was funny, particularly for manager and promoter Mickey Duff who had banned McCarthy from his shows and later took Clinton to the European title in Italy.
McCarthy's fighters were trained by ex-pro Don Davis, a decent man and a decent trainer but he wasn't one to rock the boat and there were times when Straughn, Clinton and Christie needed a Ronnie Davies slap in the face (although Davies was only doing it to impress his latest bird). Burt tried to con people by saying he wasn't in it for the money but everyone knew he was lying. I remember attending a weigh-in at the National Sporting Club on Regent Street in 1982 and Burt laid into manager Mike Sendell (verbally) over a minor money issue. Sendell didn't stand up for himself and it was unpleasant but at least McCarthy proved that he was a boxing man in one sense: he was a rotten sod. A few minutes after the scene, with McCarthy gone, one of Sendell's former fighters entered the room, shaven-skulled and with a horrible scar on his face where he had clearly been slashed with a knife. McCarthy, for once in boxing, had got lucky.

Nice one Bennie, tbh I know little about McCarthy, a little bit before my time.
You mentioned he was a microchip millionaire, so I'm guessing he made his money before boxing?
And from the sounds of it he didn't make any money in boxing!

He used to jump barriers. One day the strap of his rucksack got caught on the barrier and he fell on his back - his most embarrassing ever moment he said.

The guy slept rough, under mattresses in the street. Jumping train fares was nothing to him. Shot at in the Bronx etc.
