What a fight. First I’ve seen of either fighter. Ioka reminds me of Juan Manuel Marquez the way he puts his punches together. Tanaka looked superb just couldn’t take Iokas power.
Re: Ioka Vs Tanaka to be shown on allegedly!
Ioka seems to have improved going up in weight. Considering he edged Yaegashi in that epic years ago, then stops Tanaka... always felt Tanaka was as brave and tough as Yaegashi, but considerably more talented.

Agreed with the JMM comparison - it’s who I thought of too. Excellent timing of his punches.smiling assassin wrote: ↑31 Dec 2020, 06:09 What a fight. First I’ve seen of either fighter. Re: Ioka Vs Tanaka to be shown on allegedly!
Pretty much everyone ive seen on twitter praising the stoppage, one fella even saying it was best ref intervention of all time, theres no doubt Tanaka was hurt bad but refs got to give him opportunity to at least take a knee, if we're stopping world title fights every time a fighter gets rocked then the sport can get in the bin
Im all for safety of the fighters and if thats the criteria for a stoppage then we need consistency across the board from officials, fans need to follow suit, i just get the feeling that boxing hipsters are singing the praises because its in Japan where officiating is probably the best in world but we all know if Howard, Big Terry or IJL made that exact same stoppage on a Matchroom show in favour of the home fighter there would be fcving bedlam online
Sorry to be critical because all in all it was a class card

A good fight, a competetive one. Great left hooks by Ioka.

it was a funny one......watching it as it happened i thought it was ridiculously absurdly premature,,,,i mean it's not even a second after the punch lands that he jumps in. but then tanaka does really looked f@cked up for a good while after the fight and probably was donehandsofstone wrote: ↑31 Dec 2020, 07:08 Pretty much everyone ive seen on twitter praising the stoppage, one fella even saying it was best ref intervention of all time, theres no doubt Tanaka was hurt bad but refs got to give him opportunity to at least take a knee, if we're stopping world title fights every time a fighter gets rocked then the sport can get in the bin

so in hindsight it was the right call, but im not sure how the ref could've known that so quickly though. im not sure i've ever seen a ref jump in faster from one shot where the guy is still standing

Re: Ioka Vs Tanaka to be shown on allegedly!
Yeh i noticed Tanaka was still reeling as the ref was holding him so he was probaby ready to go, i know he'd been down twice but he was having a good spell before getting clipped again, if he'd beem taking constant leather then maybe id understand the stoppage more but i just think if your looking at the fight overall, sure Ioka was in control but he wasnt battering Tanaka, 2 textbook lefts for the knockdowns and not a case of Tanaka taking a beating, meh who knows i just think it was on the premature side, in saying that i havent seen a single person agree online so...margaret thatcher wrote: ↑31 Dec 2020, 08:23it was a funny one......watching it as it happened i thought it was ridiculously absurdly premature,,,,i mean it's not even a second after the punch lands that he jumps in. but then tanaka does really looked f@cked up for a good while after the fight and probably was donehandsofstone wrote: ↑31 Dec 2020, 07:08 Pretty much everyone ive seen on twitter praising the stoppage, one fella even saying it was best ref intervention of all time, theres no doubt Tanaka was hurt bad but refs got to give him opportunity to at least take a knee, if we're stopping world title fights every time a fighter gets rocked then the sport can get in the bin

Michiaki Someya has been fantastic all year. He was brilliant in the Yoshimitsu Kimura vs Shuma Nakazato fight, also felt he got it spot on in the Kazuki Nakajima Vs Kenta Nomura bout.handsofstone wrote: ↑31 Dec 2020, 07:08 Pretty much everyone ive seen on twitter praising the stoppage, one fella even saying it was best ref intervention of all time, theres no doubt Tanaka was hurt bad but refs got to give him opportunity to at least take a knee, if we're stopping world title fights every time a fighter gets rocked then the sport can get in the bin

Give how Tanaka's legs were gone moments later he got it spot on here.
If we were stopping a bout every time someone got rocked the bout would have been stopped after the first knockdown.
Re: Ioka Vs Tanaka to be shown on allegedly!
He'd been KD'd twice already and he was stood still shaking and defenceless from a jab - you could practically see stars over his head and a voice saying "FINISH HIM".
I thought it was premature live, but watching it back I think the ref coulda saved his career.

Terrific fight, talk about precision punching from Ioka, sublime defensive skills and slotting home the counters - the little giant was going to win that decisively, but yes I thought the referee panicked and ballsed up that stoppage: I think he would’ve gone down, taken a count and fight would’ve continued..but the ref grabbed him before he could ...
And great to have such informed calm commentary, where the guy clearly knew everything there was to know about these two guys.
You just know that none of the British commentator clowns we have would’ve had A CLUE who these two were ...Barry Jones maybe

Corey Erdman, he is bloody brilliant! Does his research, remains calm and...just...calls the fornicating action! Without a doubt someone we should hear much, much more of!MightyWarrior wrote: ↑31 Dec 2020, 09:05 Terrific fight, talk about precision punching from Ioka, sublime defensive skills and slotting home the counters - the little giant was going to win that decisively, but yes I thought the referee panicked and ballsed up that stoppage: I think he would’ve gone down, taken a count and fight would’ve continued..but the ref grabbed him before he could ...

Re: Ioka Vs Tanaka to be shown on allegedly!
Great watch as expected, Ioka remained very cool under the early pressure of Tanaka before taking over completely, quality combination punching and his left hook had both timing and power. Wasn't expecting the stoppage so quickly after the final punch, don't see that too often that soon after a single shot. Super Flyweight is a fantastic division, top entertainment guaranteed pretty much.

I’m just watching this now
Quality stuff from two really good fighters. Ioka seems to have the edge in ring craft to me. He’s on the verge of old-manning Tanaka
I’d be interested to hear BP’s take on Ioka’s style nowadays.
He used to seem to me to be quite a straight-up boxer-puncher, mostly using his feet to defend himself and stay at range, predominantly straight shots and not too much inside fighting, not that much movement from the waist. Quite like Arbachakov, actually.
Nowadays he seems more, almost more a Mexican type style. Certainly the Arroyo fight I thought he seemed a quite different fighter. His feet move less and he’s much less straight-up, his head and body movement seem a bit awkward at times but very effective. He’s playing the counter puncher more nowadays too, I’d say?

Ioka’s footwork nowadays is all purpose. His feet are much tighter to the ground and he’s ready to punch hard at nearly all times. He was always pretty good with the old half step back and counter. Difference nowadays is he’s holding his ground and dominating the space with feints and assuming the poise of readiness to counter.

That readiness to punch is really making its mark with the left hook counters

Actually he reminds me a little of the style Donaire fought Inoue in
