Old George Foreman vs Frans Botha

Post by DrDuke »

The 90s, 12 rounds.

This was a real matchup back then. Both had common opponents.

Both were outboxed by Schulz, although ironically both were awarded wins against him.

Botha had more overall success vs Moorer, but got battered eventually. Foreman was outboxed by Moorer in an utterly one-sided fashion, but scored a comeback KO.

Botha drawn with Briggs, where the majority had Botha winning. Foreman lost to Briggs, where the majority had him winning.

I guess, Botha could become a problem for George. Botha's jabs, right hands and one-twos were good. Botha could move relatively well. But he was a too opened fighter and had a tendency to gas out later on. Even old George was way more durable and his power was still huge.

I see this bout going close until the 7th or so, after what Botha would slow down and Foreman would land flush on him and send him to sleep.

How do you see this fight going?

I think Foreman would have stopped him in the middle to late rounds. It would probably have been pretty even until the stoppage.

Thanks Dr. Duke - finally a decent, feisty match-up rather than fights by systems-algorithms involving endless fixaton with James Schuler :salut:

Botha would have been way more lively-difficult than his come-at-you countryman Coetzer; The Buffalo he had more moves, faster hands and other stuff to bring.

And there's an argument he could have done just what Morrison and Schulz did which is to dart in and out, land some round-winning scoring shots and not get too macho against a guy who could still brain you with one clean punch.

Morrison won his fight with old George, Schulz got seriously unlucky a bit later .....and if Botha had tried the same gig down the line I really don't he is far off the money and the points win was realistic.

Yes, but Morrison and Schulz were less opened than Botha and more durable than him, what makes me to pick against Botha, despite accepting a possibility of Botha looking good for a while.

It is definitely an interesting fight.....

......especially if Botha tried to "do a Morrison" and kept himself out of harm's way whilst still managing to work enough.

Having said that.....one mistake against GF and it would all be over like it was for Moorer and a few others.

old Foreman would stop Botha mid rounds and do so fairly easily. Botha was there to be hit and that never bodes well against GF
