The Cuban Hawk, the great Kid Gavilan would have been 95 years old today.
He is truly one of the 50 greatest fighters ever.
Happy Birthday, Kid!

Re: Kid Gavilan! Happy 95th Birthday!
I heard he was not a very good father....in boxing, there are probably a number of fighters who were not, but Kid Gavilan's case was publicized. I guess you can say the same thing for Edwin Valero, Carlos Monzon (who killed their children's mothers) Thomas Hearns and many others. I think even Macho Camacho had trouble with his kids once but I could be wrong about the latter case.
But Gavilan would not send his children money when he was on top of the world. His wife had to apply for food stamps when he was making good money and carousing with other women.
To me, that discredits the man a lot. A fine champion for sure and one of the all time greats, but not a fine human. May you NOT have a happy birthday where you are at, Mr. Gavilan.

But, shocked me about the great Thomas Hearns. I have never heard that he was that type of character. To me, he looked like a good caring individual that took care of everybody around him, even his kids.
The only thing I heard a rumour that The Hitman knocked out one of his grown up kids when the young man was trying to disrespect daddy.
I also viewed on HBO that the great Sugar Ray Robinson was not a great guy outside the ring. He was labeled as an asshole and dead beat dad that also whupped his wife many times.
Re: Kid Gavilan! Happy 95th Birthday!
The Sugar Ray Robinson information was in The Bright lights and Dark Shadows of a Champion. Yes the public does not know these boxers personally they only know them from television and the persona that comes across the airwaves. I am not surprised when you hear the inside story of some of these guys. Evel Knievel was supposedly a real jerk a very unpleasant individual.elmersalsa wrote: ↑09 Jan 2021, 08:24I heard that about Kid Gavilan.AntonioMartin wrote: ↑07 Jan 2021, 00:04 I heard he was not a very good father....in boxing, there are probably a number of fighters who were not, but Kid Gavilan's case was publicized.
