Adrien Broner vs. Pedro Campa - February 13, 2021 (OFF)

Adrien Broner vs. Pedro Campa To Headline Feb. 13 Showtime Card

The Still Adjusting To Fame tour will now include a pre-Valentine’s Day treat.

Former four-division titlist Adrien Broner is deep in training camp for a planned showdown versus Mexico’s Pedro Campa, multiple sources have informed BS.com. The bout will take place Feb. 13 atop a Showtime Championship Boxing (SCB) telecast at a location to be determined.

Broner (33-4-1, 24 KOs) entered training camp in South Florida well before the year-end holidays, initially to get back in shape though also with the full intention of returning to the ring in the 1st quarter of 2021. Recent sessions have intensified, with Broner’s team actively searching for sparring partners to mimic Campa’s size and fighting style.

The Athletic’s Mike Coppinger was the first to report the fight being finalized.

Representatives from Showtime declined comment to Boxing Scene, in line with company standards regarding events that have not yet been announced.

The event will mark the first fight for Cincinnati’s Broner since a 12-round points loss to Manny Pacquiao in their Jan. 2019 welterweight title fight atop a Showtime Pay-Per-View event which sold 400,000 units. Prior to that came Broner’s last live appearance on Showtime’s flagship network, fighting to an entertaining 12-round draw with former two-division titlist Jessie Vargas in April 2018.

Broner has claimed titles in four separate weight division, most notably dethroning top-rated lightweight Antonio DeMarco in Nov. 2012 and then-welterweight titlist Paul Malignaggi seven months later in June 2013. Broner also won vacant belts at junior lightweight and junior weltlerweight, though both reigns ending at the scale as he missed weight ahead of eventual knockout wins over Vicente Escobedo in July 2012 and Ashley Theophane in April 2016.

Campa (31-1-1, 21 KOs) will fight for the first time in the United States. The 28-year old from Hermosillo, Mexico has not fought since an Oct. 2019 win in Ameca, Mexico. The showdown with Broner represents by far the toughest test of Campa’s career.

Sources have also informed BS.com of plans for a mid-week ShoBox card to precede the Feb. 13 show, a pattern similar to Showtime’s first fight week of 2021 with shows on Jan. 20 (ShoBox) and Jan. 23 (SCB).

I don't really know anything about this Pedro Campa guy, but with his record if he's an aggressive fighter he probably has a very good chance. If it's a Lightweight bout, and he's always competed at Lightweight or below I'd say he will definitely beat Broner.

Broner coming back is not a piece of bad news for the business. Campa has lastly competed at superlight, he looks like the typical Mexican inside fighter, tailor-made for Brony.

How do you figure? Broner can be outworked quite easily with his laying on the ropes, shaking his head every time he gets hit strategy.

I haven't seen Broner deal with anybody "easily" in a long time.

He mostly fights fringe contenders or world level guys. If this dude is well below that level then Broner will probably batter him.

So after taking the time to have a look at one of Campa's fights I'd say yes Broner should beat this guy pretty comfortably. Campa makes a lot of basic mistakes, and his 1 loss has come against a guy of a pretty low caliber.

Unless he's improved dramatically which I doubt he has, I don't think Campa has much chance at all here. Even if Broner is having a bad night.

Adrien Broner needs a new opponent for Feb.13th, Pedro Campa withdraws

Adrien Broner needs a replacement opponent for his February 13th comeback fight, as the guy that was supposed to face him, Pedro Campa, pulled out on Monday after one of his team tested positive or COVID 19.

Mike Coppinger is reporting the news of Campa (31-1-1, 21 KOs) pulling out of the scheduled 10-round fight, which had been agreed on.

Great options for Broner’s replacement for February 13th:

Ivan Redkach (23-5-1, 18 KOs) would likely jump in to face the former four-division world champion Broner if offered the fight, but there would a huge amount of risk for AB. Redkach isn’t a big puncher, but he throws many shots, and he would be putting constant pressure on Broner. That’s something that the ring-rusty Broner likely won’t be able to handle, as he hasn’t fought in two years. Moreover, Broner hasn’t won a fight in four years, and that was a dubious 10 round split decision against Adrian Granados in 2017 in AB’s hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio. The last true victory for Broner came against Ashley Theophane in 2016.

Regis Prograis (25-1, 21 KOs) would be an excellent opponent for Broner, and he’s someone that would attract a lot of fans. The former WBA light welterweight champion Prograis lost his title to Josh Taylor by a competitive 12 round majority decision in October 2019. In his last fight, Prograis destroyed Juan Heraldez by a third-round knockout last Otober.

Subriel Matias (16-1, 16 KOs) has a crowd-pleasing style that would make for a great opponent for Broner to fight. The easy to hit Matias lost to Petros Ananyan by a 10-round unanimous decision last year in February in an exciting fight from start to finish. Unfortunately, Matias’ high work rate might make him an unsuitable opponent for Broner.

Lewis Ritson (21-1, 12 KOs) would be an ideal opponent for Broner to fight for him to have fans sitting on the edge of their seats for the entire fight. Ritson is one of those attack-oriented fighters that wouldn’t back off for a second.

Good that Campa backed out. The replacement opponent would likely be more interesting anyway. Regardless of who they select.

Adrien Broner, Michel Rivera In Advanced Talks For Feb. 13 Showtime Headliner

Adrien Broner’s intended comeback showcase could instead turn into a major crossroads bout.

Rising lightweight prospect Michel ‘La Zarza’ Rivera has emerged as a leading candidate to next face the former four-division titlist, multiple sources have informed BS.com. The two sides are in advanced talks for the fight which would headline a Showtime card on Feb. 13, according to two separate sources.

Broner was originally due to face Mexico’s Pedro Campa, who was forced to withdraw from the yet-to-be-announced event due to contract tracing as a team member has tested positive for COVID-19. Rivera has now emerged atop a short list of foes to fill the void for the slotted junior welterweight fight.

Boxing insider Julius Julianis was the first to reveal the development as a done deal, though sources tell Boxing Scene the fight is not quite at the finish line.

The fight would require a move up in weight for Rivera (19-0, 12 KOs), a promising Dominican lightweight who trains out of Miami and who fights almost exclusively in the 135-pound division.

Rivera impressed in his first true step up in class, soundly outpointing Ladarius ‘Memphis’ Miller on the undercard of Gervonta Davis’ star-solidifying 6th round knockout of Leo Santa Cruz last Halloween in San Antonio, Texas. Rivera—who turns just 23 in March—weighed 134 ¾ pounds for the fight and has never weighed heavier than 137 pounds.

Prior to emerging as a candidate to face Broner, Rivera was being groomed for a March 6 ring return, on the undercard of a show to be headlined by unbeaten former two-time super middleweight titlist David Benavidez.

Broner (33-4-1, 24 KOs) is due to end a 25-month ring break with his forthcoming ring return. The 31-year old Cincinnati native has not fought since a 12-round loss to the legendary Manny Pacquiao in their secondary welterweight title fight.

The bout was Broner’s fifth as a welterweight, having bounced back and forth between that weight and 140 pounds, at which his Feb. 13 bout will take place. Broner’s last appearance as a junior welterweight resulted in a 12-round loss to then-unbeaten Mikey Garcia in July 2017.

Broner has claimed titles at junior lightweight, lightweight, junior welterweight and welterweight. His last title reign came in the 140-pound division, scoring a 12th round stoppage of Khabib Allakhverdiev atop an Oct. 2015 Showtime card in his Cincinnati hometown. The reign ended just six months later and at the scale, as Broner missed weight ahead of an eventual 9th round stoppage of Ashley Theophane in April 2016.

Just one win has followed since then, outlasting Adrian Granados atop a Feb. 2017 Showtime event in Cincinnati. Broner is 0-2-1 in his last three starts. Claims of being done with boxing forever over the past year or so have since transitioned to a comeback tour. Like Rivera, Broner is also training in South Florida in preparation for his ring return.

A tripleheader is in store for the Feb. 13 Showtime event. As previously reported by BS.com contributor Dan Rafael, the event will also include the return of former lightweight titlist Robert Easter Jr., a longtime Broner stablemate whom he has joined in training camp in South Florida. Easter is still in search of an opponent for his bout, which shares an undercard with a heavyweight clash between Otto Wallin and former two-time title challenger Dominic Breazeale.
