Press Release

Unified Lightweight Champion Teofimo Lopez (16-0, 12 KOs) will finally make his maiden title defense of his WBA, IBF, WBO, and The Ring belts against George Kambosos Jr (19-0, 10 KOs) at Hulu Theater, Madison Square Garden, New York, on Saturday, November 27 – live worldwide and exclusively on DAZN.

Lopez’s first fight since upsetting former champion Vasiliy Lomachenko in October 2020, the Brooklyn native beat the Ukrainian by unanimous decision, taking with him the prized straps and unified crown. Australian Kambosos Jr. comes into the fight as the mandatory IBF challenger, also boasting a perfect record and coming off the back of a split decision win against former IBF Featherweight Champion Lee Selby.

"The time has finally come!" said López. "It has been a long wait for Team Takeover. We’ve been in the zone for six months and counting but we’re pleased to be able to finally get this fight on DAZN! The Takeover will show the world once again why we are called 'The People’s Champ'."

"It has been a long time coming, I have been patient but ready and I have continued to perfect my craft, leaving no stone unturned to be victorious and win all the belts," said Kambosos Jr. "I’m very excited to be headlining my biggest fight of my life on another great Matchroom card against Teofimo López after earning this opportunity last year by becoming the IBF mandatory and world number 1 on another great Matchroom show. I know they will give this fight the respect it deserves and I will shock the world and be crowned World Champion on November 27 in New York City.”

“I am delighted to be bringing Lopez vs. Kambosas to DAZN and Madison Square Garden,” said Matchroom Sport Chairman Eddie Hearn. “This rivalry has been cooking for a long time and now we finally get to see them put it to bed in the Big Apple.

“Teofimo is one of the big young stars in the sport but George is a hungry proud Aussie who knows that this is the chance to put his name amongst the elite of the game.

“The Lightweight division will catch fire once again at the end of 2021 with Devin Haney set to defend his WBC crown in December on DAZN after Teofimo and George tangle; the winter schedule on DAZN is unrivaled and this fight is one of the best out there at the end of this year.”

“We’re thrilled to add this incredible Lightweight clash to our fall fight schedule to close out a busy 2021,” said Joseph Markowski, DAZN EVP. “López is a superstar in the sport of boxing and I’m sure will treat DAZN subscribers worldwide with a magnificent performance on the night. Kambosos is a tough competitor and a real test for the champion. This is one of the hottest divisions of the sport and both men will undoubtedly leave it all in the ring on November 27 and give fight fans globally a night to remember.”

Known for his stunning knockout power, Lopez is world ranked #5 pound-for-pound by ESPN and #7 by RING Magazine.

The 24-year-old Lopez was the recipient of the prestigious 2020 ‘Fighter of the Year’ award by both RING Magazine and the Boxing Association of America in addition to many other international sporting platforms. Truly feeling at home at THE Mecca, Lopez has fought six previous times at Madison Square Garden including his IBF world title knockout victory over Richard Commey on December 14, 2019.

A true sporting road warrior, the 28-year-old Kambosos Jr. earned his Mandatory Challenger status by traveling to London, United Kingdom on October 31, 2020 and soundly defeating hometown favorite Lee Selby over twelve rounds. Prior to that, Kambosos Jr., also fighting on December 14, 2019 at Madison Square Garden, was victorious in a dominant ten-round performance against former world champion Mickey Bey.

Headlining the undercard, DANIEL ‘El GALLO’ GONZALEZ, (20-2-1, 7 KOs), of Woodhaven, NY clashes with Brooklyn’s PETROS ANANYAN, (15-2-2, 7 KOs), in a scheduled 10-round junior welterweight bout.

Undefeated junior middleweight prospects hit the ring in a scheduled eight-rounder as JOSE ‘CHEITO’ ROMAN, (11-0, 5 KOS), of Bayamon, Puerto Rico faces CESAR ‘RAINMAN’ FRANCIS, (8-0, 6 KOs), of Brooklyn, NY.

Rounding out the card, newcomer HARLEY MEDEROS, (1-0, 1 KO), of Brooklyn, NY will see action in a four-round lightweight clash. Further details on these three fights will be announced shortly.

IBF order mandatory defence

“IBF Lightweight Champion Teofimo Lopez won the Title on December 14, 2019. His mandatory defense was due on or before September 14, 2020. The leading available number one contender is George Kambosos Jr. George Kambosos Jr.,” Carlos Ortiz, chairman of the IBF Championship Committee stated in an official notification to both parties, a copy of which has been obtained by Boxing Scene. “Negotiations should commence immediately and be concluded by February 6, 2021.

“If you are unable to come to an agreement for this bout within 30 days, the IBF will call for a purse bid.”

Penalties are in place should either side abandon the ordered title fight.

“A Champion’s failure to comply with this obligation will be sufficient cause to have the Championships Committee and Board of Directors consider withdrawing recognition of the title,” notes Ortiz. “If the mandatory challenger agrees to fight the Champion and they are unable to negotiate the terms of the bout within thirty (30) days, they have the obligation to proceed to a purse bid under the procedure set forth in Rule 10.

“The Challenger’s failure to comply with this rule will result in the Championships Committee recognizing the next leading available contender as the mandatory challenger and moving the challenger to a position below #10 in the rankings for at least 6 months.”

I’m not mad about this fight. Teo taking on a mandatory in a global fight.

Should be fun.

Teofimo will floor him by round 9.

question for you guys....if a boxer has a title, are they out of the running to be a mandatory for another fighter?

CASE IN POINT:

Teofimo Lopez (fighter)

box rec lightweight rankings in order and reason why they can't or aren't mandatory:

Tank: super feather weight belt
Loma: beat already
Haney: lightweight belt
Ryan: interim lightweight belt
Comey: beat already
Kambosos: MANDATORY

Hypothetically the bigger payday is against Tank, Haney, or Garcia, rather than Kambosos. How does this convoluted system work?

Yes. One organisation will not rank another org’s champions.

Only way it can happen is if both fights agree. Will never be mandatory.

I see Kambosos being a game opponent ... maybe even win 1-2 rounds ... however when it hits around round 8 I'd expect Teofimo to hit the throttle and end the evening. Prediction : Teo via a 9th round TKO stoppage.

Arum Doesn't Expect Lopez-Kambosos Bout To Happen In Australia Until Pandemic Ends

Bob Arum expects Teofimo Lopez to face George Kambosos in his next fight.

Lopez’s promoter also thinks their mandated match will take place in Australia, Kambosos’ homeland. The 89-year-old Arum informed Boxing Scene that Lopez-Kambosos won’t take place before the COVID-19 pandemic ends, though.

“Tell me when the pandemic is over,” Arum replied when asked when Lopez-Kambosos could be scheduled. “Right now, the money looks like it’s lined up for that fight, that would enable us to put that fight on in Australia. But, you know, you can’t really get into Australia now. At a minimum, you’ve gotta do a 14-day quarantine, and that’s not a bullsh-t American quarantine. You’ve gotta go to a government hotel and stay there for 14 days.”

Another complication, according to Arum, is that the Australian government would provide some financial backing to bring the Lopez-Kambosos bout to a stadium either in Sydney or Melbourne.

“We’re looking to do that fight with government support,” Arum explained. “The Australian government is trying not to attract tourists, but to keep out tourists at this point, until the pandemic is over worldwide, because Australia has managed the pandemic extraordinarily well and they have very few cases. And they don’t want us foreigners to come in to contaminate them.”

The 27-year-old Kambosos (19-0, 10 KOs) was born and raised in Sydney, Australia’s most populous city. Kambosos became the IBF’s mandatory challenger for one of Lopez’s four lightweight titles by defeating Wales’ Lee Selby (28-3, 9 KOs) by split decision in their 12-round elimination match October 31 at Wembley Arena in London.

The 23-year-old Lopez (16-0, 12 KOs) is a Brooklyn native who relocated last year to Jonesboro, Arkansas. He is more than willing to travel halfway around the world to defend the titles he won from Vasiliy Lomachenko on October 17, but Lopez expects to be well-compensated for facing Kambosos in his challenger’s home country.

“I think if they wanna take me to Australia, they gotta pay me $10 million,” Lopez told Boxing Scene recently. “I’m the undisputed champion. If you wanna take me to your country, you’ve gotta pay me. They’re talking about having 80,000 people at the fight, or something like that. I don’t know if that’s a true number, but if they’re planning on something like that, they’re making big money. You’ve gotta pay the man, pay your entertainer. You want that entertainment over there, you’ve gotta pay the man first.”

I Think it SHOULD be in Oz..

Only way GKJ has a chance of an upset.
Better crowd and atmosphere - the Aussies are so grateful to have big international events.
Pandemic obviously much better handled in Oz.

I was watching some highlights of this Kambosos fellow and I wouldnt put it past him to win this thing. Obviously the smart money would be on Teofimo but a Kambosos win would only be a minor upset.
