Sugar Ray Leonard: Best win?
Re: Sugar Ray Leonard: Best win?
Ray wanted no parts of prime Hagler, so he manipulated, and Hagler fell for the okiedoke. Though he got a beautiful Italian wife out of the deal.

Re: Sugar Ray Leonard: Best win?
That is why I don't rate his win over Marvelous as something special. He waited for Marvelous to slip and then challenged him after Duran and Hearns fought Marvelous first in Marvelous prime.
Sugar Ray's best win was against The Hitman. That was his defining fight. But, above 147lbs, he did not do much. He was a TOTAL JOKE after 1982. Only 7 fights in the last 15 years and some people in here wanna put him in the top 10 all-time?
That is UNREALISTIC! There were more fighters that deserve to be top 10 more than he and are not. Examples? Tony Canzoneri, Archie Moore, Jack Johnson and Benny Leonard.

After 1982, wasn't really a career for Ray anymore. Moore and Leonard definitely deserve to be there, if not considered. The whole Lalonde 175/168 title fight in one night, arguably one of the biggest disgraces in boxing history.

I am surprised that win over Hagler isnt more appreciated here. Welterweight return after 3 years and defeat middleweight king. Hagler is one of my alltime favorites but that was badass win for Leonard

Re: Sugar Ray Leonard: Best win?
I agree the first fight with Thomas Hitman Hearns was Leonards best win. He turned puncher and Tommy turned boxer. A great performance. I also believe that The Hitman was the Sugar Mans most difficult opponent and style. Leonard would struggle with him every single time. The fight was an absolute super fight and a great matchup. The two best welterweights in the world fought each other on that hot memorable night September 16 1981. Also this is one of the great fights of the great decades of the 1980s and furthermore one of the great fights in boxing history.
Re: Sugar Ray Leonard: Best win?
Hagler was on the decline so yes it was impressive for Leonard to win. I had him winning a close decision. He fought a great fight but Hagler may have let his ego get the better of him and try to fight Leonards game. I do agree it was a great win but the Duran and Hearns wins were better in my opinion.

I know, it's nuts isn't.
'Hagler was slipping!' Then what was Leonard!?
Re: Sugar Ray Leonard: Best win?
I concur with you. Leonard called the shots and Hagler played along the ring size the 12 round distance etc it was very clever manipulation.gilgamesh wrote: ↑17 Feb 2018, 14:00 The Poll question was kinda pointless huh?![]()
Best win it's either a toss up between Tommy Hearns 1 or Marvin Hagler.
Depending on how you look at it. He was definitely a bigger underdog against Hagler, and that was definitely a bigger upset at the time it happened, however as we all know it was Marvin's last fight, and he wasn't what he used to be by then though still obviously very good.
He and Tommy Hearns in their 1st fight were both in their primes and pretty much at their best.

Had it 116-112 Leonard.f read wrote: ↑16 Jan 2021, 09:22Hagler was on the decline so yes it was impressive for Leonard to win. I had him winning a close decision. Re: Sugar Ray Leonard: Best win?
I had it the same. Leonard was the clear winner. I disagree with JoJo Guerra 118-110 that means 10 rounds to 2 i did not see it that one sided. The memory i have most of the fight was Hagler went orthodox early and practically gave the first 4 rounds away.Nile4000 wrote: ↑16 Jan 2021, 17:44Had it 116-112 Leonard.f read wrote: ↑16 Jan 2021, 09:22Hagler was on the decline so yes it was impressive for Leonard to win.
