Re: Joe Calzaghe - Question Mark
Absolute rubbish. Froch had no choice because of Meaty Mick. Premier, couldn’t even get telly for a WBC defence.... minute he got comfy he took Mack! Never wanted anything to do with a Ward rematch.jamesmcdonnell wrote: ↑18 Jan 2021, 17:34No doubt there.
If only hed had Frochs balls.
He would probably have lost a few, but he would have been remembered with a lot more affection.
Re: Joe Calzaghe - Question Mark
Nonsense!!!
Froch had one easier world title defence that would still stand up well to several of Calzaghe's "formalities"...and at least he was entertaining, where as Joe could still stink against gimmes.
Froch soon went back in with tough challengers. It was Carl who broke the cycle of Collins avoiding Calzaghe, Calzaghe avoiding Froch, but Froch didn't swerve Groves...twice!
If you don't want tough fights...don't sign on the dotted line. Froch was bang up for testing assignments.
Why would he chase a rematch with Ward ? He was well beaten and Carl knew it. No one needed to see that again.
Calzaghe's a bit of a joke in comparison...Viet can have a rematch, but left Reid and Kessler well alone. It's pathetic !

Because he had to! Nobody was interested in him. Groves made him if anything.THEBUTCH wrote: ↑18 Jan 2021, 19:11 Nonsense!!!

Weren't Viet mandatory for the rematch. I don't think they would have chose to fight him again.THEBUTCH wrote: ↑18 Jan 2021, 19:11 Nonsense!!!

Re: Joe Calzaghe - Question Mark
I remember they tried to make a deal with Ward but it didn’t work. They wanted him to go to Nottingham.

one gimme after a facing a murderers row, you are doing him a disservice.mickey1975 wrote: ↑18 Jan 2021, 18:48Absolute rubbish. Froch had no choice because of Meaty Mick. Re: Joe Calzaghe - Question Mark
I don’t know if I’ve posted this before but Alex Arthur told me that Calzaghe was on another level to any other fighter he knew. If his hands had been ok not only would he have beaten everyone he’d have won lots by KO. He was a murderous puncher.
That he adapted to such a huge handicap and still went on to be unbeaten speaks for itself. Like Floyd jnr also.

Re: Joe Calzaghe - Question Mark
joe was exceptional and carl was very entertaining. enjoyed both their careers. joes did drag in places tho. carls was thrill a minute. I'd pick both to do benn/eubank/collins.

Joe was a completely different level.
Re: Joe Calzaghe - Question Mark
An excellent fighter, but there are questions marks.
Mainly his endless defenses of the WBO title, staying a home. Also fighting some of the better names on his resume when they were on the way down rather than on their way up.
But overall an enviable record.

So was his reluctance to take on all comers.
It seems you're using every excuse in the book to excuse Calzghages record, whilst playing down Frochs.
I'd have picked Calzaghe to beat froch if they'd fought, but it's quite possible the fight would never have happened.

Calzaghe had 10 defences as bad as Yousef 'back door' Mack.Steveh583 wrote: ↑19 Jan 2021, 03:27one gimme after a facing a murderers row, you are doing him a disservice.mickey1975 wrote: ↑18 Jan 2021, 18:48Absolute rubbish. Don’t need excuses. He fought injured his entire career. Tony Booth says he hits harder than anyone he’s boxed or sparred but could only do a few rounds.jamesmcdonnell wrote: ↑21 Jan 2021, 13:41So was his reluctance to take on all comers.

Fighters carry all sorts of injuries, or are we to believe Calzaghes the only fighter to have bad hands, or that Tony booth is the ultimate arbiter of punch power?mickey1975 wrote: ↑21 Jan 2021, 13:58Don’t need excuses. I was a fan of Calzaghe during his career, but your defence of him is bordering on pathological Mickey.

I’d say Tony, after 150 fights, countless sparring jobs with Benn, etc, going in with Chisora might know a few things. Oh, Haye too.jamesmcdonnell wrote: ↑21 Jan 2021, 14:01Fighters carry all sorts of injuries, or are we to believe Calzaghes the only fighter to have bad hands, or that Tony booth is the ultimate arbiter of punch power?mickey1975 wrote: ↑21 Jan 2021, 13:58Don’t need excuses. Of course he does that's no doubt, but fighters sparring stories are notoriously unreliable, let's be honest.mickey1975 wrote: ↑21 Jan 2021, 14:05I’d say Tony, after 150 fights, countless sparring jobs with Benn, etc, going in with Chisora might know a few things. Re: Joe Calzaghe - Question Mark
His hands must have been brittle. He was knocking them all over in the ams and up until he fought Eubank. Then it stopped.
Another thing that shows Joe‘s class. Who actually ran him close. Of all the title fights he had, who really pushed him? I can only think of Reid and Hopkins.

No, he speaks highly of Benn in Tenerife but swears Joe hit like a bastard in the Newbrige shed.jamesmcdonnell wrote: ↑21 Jan 2021, 14:10Of course he does that's no doubt, but fighters sparring stories are notoriously unreliable, let's be honest.mickey1975 wrote: ↑21 Jan 2021, 14:05I’d say Tony, after 150 fights, countless sparring jobs with Benn, etc, going in with Chisora might know a few things. Booth strikes me as the ‘doesn’t give credit lightly’ type TBH
I can more easily imagine him saying all manner of fighteslrs were shite and couldn’t punch for toffee than over-egging any praise.

He admits sitting out a count but says he’s never been knocked out, and he’s a natural light middleweight. He doesn’t even go overboard on Haye, Joe must have put him through it.Counter-puncher wrote: ↑21 Jan 2021, 14:31 Booth strikes me as the ‘doesn’t give credit lightly’ type TBH
