Does anyone know of his whereabouts? I heard he was a personal trainer now. If anyone has any contact details for Dennis can they PM them to me please.

I seem to recall reading something on the Kronk Website about him. You could try Richard T Sloane who administrates their site I think, they may still be in touch with him.

Dennis was one tough old hombre, apparently he became one of the most feared fighters at the Kronk in sparring.

I mentioned this before

One of my absolute faves. Not for any level of technical skill but for sheer bottle

from his world championship win ( in a tent? do I remember that correctly ) to the beating he took from Hearns, to the respect he earned at the Kronk

Just checking on his record, he had some decent names on his win list too

Not many like him around anymore

Errrrr he was also shite and awful to watch. How many fights have you seen of his? He had no style whatsoever. Alright I admit I was a bit excited when he won the title but after the Hearns fight he got worse and worse. He still had wins but really I'm sorry to say I hated watching him.

I remember him making an excuse prior to the Hearns fight. The Hearns camp were supposedly banging on his door and keeping him awake the night before the fight. Standard approach but I rememebr Andries saying about it.

more than you would imagine and many of them live.

As I said, you almost had to love him for getting so far with no semblance of technical ability

He was better post Kronk and one of the harding fights he was close to being quite good.

you are being a bit hardsh on a 3 times WBC world champ there mate - alright he was no stick n move boxer and he threw his right hand like he was bowling a cricket ball but credit where it is due!!

He won a world crown and after losing to Hearns realised he wasnt good enough but was man enough to swallow his pride, go to one of the toughest gyms in the world (at that time) to re-invent himself as a fighter.

What he lacked in boxing ability he more then made up for with guts, heart, determination and fitness. He was an effective fighter at an age when most had retired and his trilogy with Harding is the stuff of legend.

Andries was a credit to the sport and I for one enjoyed watching him, even if it wasnt always pretty! (not everyone can be a Sweet Pea Whitaker!)

Yes, and it's worth remembering that he was pretty old when he went to the Kronk, he was already 34 when he lost to hearns, 36 when he lost to harding, 37 when he won the title back, 38 when he lost again, and has his last competitive fight, for the british cruiserweight title at the age of 43!

That alone deserves respect, and his fight with Hearns is one of the most remarkable displays of courage I've seen in a boxing ring.

Although never pretty to watch, to call him 'shite' is wrong. I've seen his series of fights against Harding, they were great.
Also he was won a good fight over Bobby Czyz in a surprise.
The win over Sibson was a gruelling affair, and he came through.
As well as beating people such as Tom Collins (4 times), Bailey (savage Ko), Tony Willis ( heavily favoured to beat Andries).

So no he wasn't 'Shite'

Andries was a good fighter. Incredible stamina and toughness. He was beaten by a legend in Hearns who outreached him and sniped at him with power shots. He went down a lot of times but it was a funny stopage & I seem to remember Tommy on the canvas not long before Dennis got stopped.

When he went to Kronk, he improved quite a lot. His punching technique definitely improved and I wouldn't call a classic trilogy with Jeff Harding "shite". Harding was a beast himself. Andries was officially nearing his late 30s by then, but I think his real DOB was hard to verify & he could've been at least 4 years older than he let on.

Add to that he battered Sibson (making him yell out in pain), Czyz, and was robbed in the 3rd Harding fight (should've won the trilogy 2-1) & that's a good resume.

That was a definate knockdown, but as i remember it the ref didn't call it.

I think the Hearns-Andries fight was the second or third fight I'd seen all the way through. I also seem to recall some sort of knockdown/slip from Hearns just before Andries got stopped.

Also remember the third Harding fight. Split decision wasn't it. I thought Andries just nicked it. Shame he couldn't get a close decision in London.

On a completely different note, wasn't Andries ahead on points in the first Harding fight when stopped, and wasn't Harding also a relatively short notice sub for Donny Lalonde.

I remember seeing Dennis against Karl Canwell for the Southern Area Title in 83(?) Canwell came out looking strong but Dennis looked superhuman., as if he'd 50% more in the tank from the off. A natural strongman with a will of iron. One boxer who'll always be on my 'Respect' list....
