Oscar Valdez: Berchelt, Covid, Canelo and more

Oscar Valdez is challenging WBC super featherweight champion Miguel Berchelt in a much-anticipated ESPN clash that will take place on February 20 inside “The Bubble” at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

“This is the opportunity that I waited for all my life,” Valdez told Fightnews.com. “In school I used to draw myself in my notebook as WBC world champion. This is the opportunity of my life, a dream come true.

“It was sad to wait. I was a little upset because the fight didn’t happen in December, but it’s nobody’s fault. I was training hard for the fight, I went back home a little upset. But now the fight is here and all we have to do is take care of ourselves, wear a mask, social distancing and the fight is right around the corner. We are more than ready. I want to fight so bad.”

On training with Canelo

“We both want this fight. Berchelt is great fighter, it’s going to be a great fight. Training camp has been great. In boxing you never stop learning. We have been studying Berchelt. In the gym we all have a great relationship. Each and every one of us has our schedule. We help each other. I get motivated by watching Canelo training. I want to train as hard as he does or harder.”

Final Thoughts:

“I know Berchelt is coming for the KO and I like that. He wants to try my chin, but he has to be careful because I have power too, be careful because I can punch too.

“My goal is to be world champion again, to beat Berchelt, and then we want the best challenge out there. I want to be one of the great ones for Mexico.

“I want to thank the fans and I feel obliged to perform for you. I want to bring a great fight for you and bring back boxing to the old school. I will leave my heart in the ring for you all. Thank you for your support and don’t miss my fight against Berchelt on February 20!”

Smith-Vlasov, Berchelt-Valdez Cards To Be Held At MGM Grand In Las Vegas

After exploring other Las Vegas venues, promoter Bob Arum has decided to bring his next two ESPN shows back to MGM Grand.

BS.com has been informed that Top Rank’s cards scheduled for February 13 and February 20 will be broadcast from MGM Grand Conference Center. ESPN has either televised or streamed all of Top Rank’s cards from that venue since Arum’s company brought boxing back to television in the United States on June 9.

Top Rank seriously considered taking the February 13 and February 20 cards to Park Theater at Park MGM, which is located across Las Vegas Boulevard from MGM Grand. Fans still won’t be permitted to attend either show due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The February 13 card will feature light heavyweights Joe Smith Jr. and Maxim Vlasov in the 12-round main event. Smith (26-3, 21 KOs), of Mastic, New York, and Vlasov (45-3, 26 KOs), of Samara, Russia, will fight for the vacant WBO 175-pound title.

In the co-feature February 13, Richard Commey (29-3, 26 KOs), a former IBF lightweight champ from Ghana, is set to meet Dominican contender Jackson Marinez (19-1, 7 KOs) in a 10-rounder.

A week later, the February 20 show will feature Mexican rivals Miguel Berchelt and Oscar Valdez in the main event. Berchelt (38-1, 34 KOs) will defend his WBC super featherweight title versus Valdez (28-0, 22 KOs) in what figures to be a fantastic fight.

In the co-feature February 20, 130-pound prospect Gabriel Flores Jr. (19-0, 6 KOs), of Stockton, California, and Puerto Rican veteran Jayson Velez (29-7-1, 21 KOs) will square off in a 10-rounder.

Top Rank won’t schedule shows for the month of March in the United States. Venues for the company’s shows in April and beyond will depend upon when COVID-19 restrictions will at least allow a limited number of fans to attend fights.

Anyone else feeling underwhelmed by Berchelt’s career since beating Vargas that first time? With so much talent in and around that weight and it seems like he’s been handled like a dozen soft shelled eggs.

I don’t consider Valdez as a dangerous fight either as he should walk right through Oscar. IMO Berchelt has and has had P4P talent but this pancake path he’s been on continues to make him even worse than an afterthought in any discussions involving Boxing’s elite. He has the skills and chin to beat anyone.

Valdez: In The Berchelt Fight, Friendship Goes Out The Window, Losing is Not an Option!

Former WBO featherweight champion Oscar Valdez is less than a month away from the most dangerous fight of his pro career.

On February 20th at the MGM Grand's Conference Center in Las Vegas, Valdez will challenge WBC super featherweight champion Miguel Berchelt in an ESPN televised main event.

Berchelt believes Valdez has a flaw with his chin - and he plans to check it hard for a knockout win.

In March 2018, Valdez suffered a broken jaw during a tough win over Scott Quigg - and he has been dropped in other contests.

Valdez believes a knockout ending could just as easily go in the other direction.

"Berchelt says he is going for the knockout, I'm not going to crack, but the knockout could show up for the other side. It will be a tough fight but not impossible... in my corner is my father and Eddy Reynoso. When two Mexicans get into a ring there is always going to be a show. I am in the position to provide a good fight," Valdez told Javier Cordoso.

"During history, a lot of Mexicans have given great fights like Julio César Chávez, Erik Morales, Juan Manuel Márquez and Ricardo 'El Finito' López. I dream of being a WBC champion, I train in parks and wherever I can, sometimes running, but I try to prepare as good as possible."

For the championship fight, the corners will play an important role: Eddy Reynoso in the corner of the two-time Olympian and Alfredo Caballero with Berchelt.

Valdez and Berchelt have been friendly and know each other from the amateurs - but they won't be friends when they steps in the ring.

"Caballero is a great trainer, but this is not a fight between trainers, it is not Caballero going against Reynoso, it is Miguel Berchelt against Oscar Valdez. In this fight here, friendship goes out the window and losing is not an option for me."

Oscar Valdez: I Chose Berchelt To Have a War, Fight For WBC Title

Two-time Olympian Oscar Valdez (28-0, 22 KOs) is motivated that most observers are stating that it's very difficult for him to defeat WBC super featherweight world champion Miguel 'Alacran' Berchelt (37-1, 33 KOs).

The will collide on February 20 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Valdez, 30-years-old, will seek his second division title, after being the WBO featherweight world champion, with six triumphant defenses.

“I grew up with the fights of Erik Morales and Marco Antonio Barrera,” Valdez stressed to Jose Luis Camarillo.

"And I already lived through the final moments of Mike Tyson. The best fought the best. Now it is known that some fighters turn away from others because of money. I don't like that. I chose to fight Berchelt... it is the toughest, it is a very attractive fight for the public and, most importantly, to have a war and fight for the title of my dreams, the WBC.”

Berchelt lived for several years in Hermosillo, the same city where Valdez lived. The two boxers knew each other in the amateurs.

“Since we were amateurs, he was a national champion and I was in international competitions. The fight never happened [back then], he was a little frustrated that he couldn't represent the country in the Olympics and I was number one," Valdez said.

"We met several times in the same places, in restaurants, he is a great guy inside and outside the ring, but from the moment our fight was signed, the friendship went out the window, that rivalry returns, who is braver, who has more heart, who is more of a warrior - I think I am and I will prove it on February 20, I am very hungry, it is my dream.

"The public has not yet seen my best abilities. I always study an opponent for a long time, I know I have everything to beat Berchelt. He is difficult, tough, he has fought with the best: against (Takashi) Miura, he took the title from (Francisco) Vargas, he beat Jason Sosa, tremendous fighters. Berchelt is a tremendous fighter. My mentality has made me win, I am a very disciplined boxer, I never give up on fulfilling my dream, I may have a hurt rib, a hurt hand, a (broken) jaw, they may have dropped me to the canvas, but my desire to succeed has helped me get ahead in those fights, my amateur career has helped me grow as a professional."

Press Release | Undercard Update | Falcao-Akavov, Rodriguez-Veron

Brazilian middleweight contender Esquiva Falcao is coming back to America. After a pair of knockout wins last year in his home nation, the 2012 Olympic silver medalist will take on two-time world title challenger Artur Akavov in a 10-rounder Saturday, Feb. 20 from MGM Grand Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.

In a junior welterweight special feature scheduled for eight or six rounds, knockout wizard Elvis “The Dominican Kid” Rodriguez will face Argentine veteran Luis Alberto Veron.

Falcao-Akavov, Rodriguez-Veron and additional undercard bouts will stream live on ESPN+ at 6:45 p.m. ET/3:45 p.m. PT. The evening continues live on ESPN & ESPN3 (in Spanish) (10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT) with the all-Mexican showdown between WBC super featherweight world champion Miguel Berchelt and former world champion Oscar Valdez, and junior lightweight contender Gabriel Flores Jr. against former world title challenger Jayson Velez.

Falcao (27-0, 19 KOs), ranked No. 5 by the IBF and WBO, is a seven-year pro who ended his sterling amateur career with a 215-15 record. He has won four consecutive bouts by knockout, including an eighth-round stoppage over Mexican veteran Jesus Antonio Gutierrez in July 2019. Akavov (20-3, 9 KOs) nearly dethroned WBO middleweight world champion Billy Joe Saunders in December 2016, dropping a controversial decision. He challenged for the same world title in January 2019 and was bested by Demetrius Andrade en route to a 12th-round TKO loss. Akavov last fought in October 2019 and knocked out 50-fight veteran Sergei Melis in five rounds.

Falcao said, "I am ready to face the best in my division. My opponent is a good boxer, but I am better and I am ready to become a world champion. No fighter will stop me. I'm training very hard with Robert García. I'm sparring with the best because I am one of the best. On February 20, I will show the world once again that I am ready to become a world champion."

Rodriguez (10-0-1, 10 KOs) emerged as one of boxing’s hottest prospects in 2020, going 5-0 with five knockouts, including four headline-making stoppages inside the MGM Grand Las Vegas Bubble. He last fought Oct. 9 and became only the second man to knock out 37-fight veteran Cameron Krael. Veron (18-2-2, 9 KOs) has never been knocked out as a professional and is a former WBO Latino and South American welterweight champion. He is coming off a competitive decision defeat to 2012 Olympic bronze medalist Taras Shelestyuk in January 2020.

Rodriguez said, "I want to show that I am ready for the big fights. I think I deserved to be the Prospect of the Year. Not being named Prospect of the Year has motivated me more than ever. I am here to become a world champion. I am very grateful for the opportunities Top Rank is giving me and for the efforts of my entire team. I am going to show who I am through my actions in the ring, not through words or social media."

In other ESPN+ streaming action:

Xander Zayas (6-0, 5 KOs), the Puerto Rican prodigy who celebrated his 18th birthday last September, will clash with Philadelphia native James Martin (6-1) in a six-round welterweight fight. Zayas signed with Top Rank at 16 years old and hopes to extend his knockout streak to four against Martin, who has never been stopped in the paid ranks.

“Since my last fight, I’ve had an extended camp and have been fortunate to spar numerous world champions and top fighters, which has provided me a wealth of experience,” Zayas said. “I’m excited to fight on February 20 and put on a show for my fans.”

Unbeaten junior lightweights collide when California Central Valley favorite Bryan Lua (7-0, 3 KOs) fights Puerto Rican prospect Frevian Gonzalez (4-0, 1 KO) in a six-rounder. Gonzalez and Lua won two fights apiece inside the MGM Grand Las Vegas Bubble last year, with Lua scoring a highlight-reel knockout over Luis Norambuena in his first fight following a 27-month layoff.

Sonny “The Bronco” Conto (6-0, 5 KO), South Philadelphia’s latest heavyweight hopeful, is set to return from a 13-month layoff against Waldo Cortes (6-3, 3 KOs) in a four-rounder. Conto battled assorted injuries throughout 2020, but he is ready for a busier 2021. Cortes fought Bubble favorite Kingsley Ibeh last June, giving as good as he received before being knocked out in the fourth round.

Milwaukee-born middleweight sensation Javier Martinez (2-0) will make his third appearance inside the MGM Grand Las Vegas Bubble, this time in a four-rounder against Montana native Billy Wagner (3-1, 1 KO).

One of Puerto Rico’s brightest young talents, Omar Rosario (2-0), will make his Las Vegas debut in a four-round welterweight tilt versus fellow unbeaten Uriel Villanueva (1-0). Rosario, a 23-year-old from Caguas, won the 2020 Olympic Trials for his home nation at 152 pounds before electing to turn pro.

Valdez: I Was Very Mad At Berchelt For Not Taking Care Of Himself, Getting COVID

Oscar Valdez was furious when he found out early in November that Miguel Berchelt tested positive for COVID-19.

Valdez was well into training camp for a fight that was scheduled for December 12 in Las Vegas. The former WBO featherweight champion had taken every precaution possible to ensure that him and his team avoided contracting COVID-19, but Valdez doesn’t believe Berchelt did the same thing.

Once their 12-round, 130-pound title fight was postponed indefinitely, Valdez needed some time to calm down.

“It was very heartbreaking at first,” Valdez told Boxing Scene. “I was very mad at him for the simple reason of him not taking care of himself, maybe. I seen him going out to public spots, baseball games. I got a little frustrated because I take this very seriously. We’re always at the gym, sanitizing, picking and choosing our sparring partners that we know that are tested. We’re taking this very seriously because we wanna fight. This is our job. This is how we feed our families. And the fans want this fight, so I got very upset at him for getting COVID.”

The highly anticipated bout between these Mexican rivals has been rescheduled for February 20 at MGM Grand Conference Center in Las Vegas. Valdez admits that even as they move closer toward their fight, he cannot help but worry that it could be postponed again.

“What can you do? We are living in a global pandemic, so anything can happen,” Valdez said. “We’re just trying to stay focused. Hopefully, this time him and his teammates are taking care of themselves, because we are. We’re definitely taking care of ourselves because we really want this fight for the fans.”

The 30-year-old Valdez is training in Guadalajara, Mexico, for a main event ESPN will televise. The 29-year-old Berchelt prepared for this mandated defense of his WBC super featherweight title in Los Mochis, Mexico.

Valdez (28-0, 22 KOs) has been careful to avoid overtraining because he returned to the gym only a couple weeks after his 10th-round stoppage of Puerto Rico’s Jayson Velez (29-7-1, 21 KOs) in his last fight, July 21 at MGM Grand Conference Center.

“I’ve been training for almost a full year because this fight was supposed to happen in early 2020,” Valdez said. “It keeps getting postponed. Finally, we get the fight date of December 12th, and then my rival gets COVID. We were already in tip-top shape. So, the hard part is to actually slow down, because you can’t always do [high-intensity] training all the time. So, that was the hard part. But we actually did a good job on that. We relaxed a bit and then we stepped it up a bit.”

Berchelt (38-1, 34 KOs) stopped Mexican journeyman Eleazar Valenzuela (22-14-4, 16 KOs, 1 NC) in the sixth round of his last fight, June 27 at TV Azteca’s Studios in Mexico City.

Miguel Berchelt: It will be a war

WBC super featherweight champion Miguel “Alacran” Berchelt (38-1-0, 34 KOs) of Cancun squares off against former world champion Oscar Valdez (28-0-0, 22 KOs) of Nogales, Sonora in a Mexican showdown this Saturday in the bubble of the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas live on ESPN. The champ spoke about his upcoming title defense against his fellow countryman Valdez in what has the makings of a classic.

“I’m excited for this fight and extremely focused, motivated in having a great fight. I have worked hard to be where I am today. This fight represents a lot is the biggest fight in Mexican boxing. This will be a great fight. I’m ready. I feel I am going to win this fight. It will be a war,” Berchelt said. “I will give it my best. I will fight a smart fight, and everyone knows that I can punch. El Alacran will unleash his poison.”

This will be Berchelt’s seventh defense of his WBC 130-pound world championship he won in over Francisco Vargas by stoppage in January of 2017. Since then, Berchelt has defended his title five times with wins over Japan’s Takashi Miura, Mickey Roman, and stopped Francisco Vargas a second time in their rematch. Berchelt’s last title defense came in November of 2019 as he scored a fourth-round knockout over Jason Sosa.

“This is definitely the biggest fight of my career against Valdez. I’m really excited,” Berchelt said. “Come Saturday night, the fans will be the real winners,”

Coming off a stoppage over Eleazar Valenzuela, Berchelt had a glorified sparring session in scoring the sixth-round knockout in a non-title bout back in June at the TV Azteca Studios in Mexico City.

There is no doubt that this is the biggest fight of Berchelt’s career as he held a solid training camp.

“I have had a great camp. My preparation was great I am ready for this fight Saturday night. I’m coming with everything,” Berchelt on his preparation.

Unfortunately for Berchelt, he could be without his head trainer _ as he had VISA issues entering the country. Berchelt however remains optimistic that he will have his trainer in his corner come fight night.

“Being without my trainer Alfredo Caballero, what can I say? I’m like a luxury yacht and to navigate the ocean the yacht needs a captain that is going to guide it,” Berchelt on the situation

With the magnitude of this fight, Berchelt cannot afford to have this serve as a distraction.

“I feel great. Regardless of the situation. Alfredo will be here. I am just ready for this fight and anxious to get in the ring. Alfredo is anxious to go up against Eddie Reynoso,”

As for his opponent, Valdez a 2012 Olympian, won his first world title with a stunning knockout over Matias Rueda in the summer of 2016. Valdez made seven defenses of his WBO featherweight title including a thrilling decision win over Scott Quigg as he fought most of the fight with a broken jaw. Valdez vacated his title and moved up to super featherweight in November of 2019 as he rose from the canvas to stop Adam Lopez.

“He is a great fighter. He lays it all on the line. Styles make fights. He has his style and I have my style,” Berchelt on Oscar Valdez.

Valdez stopped former world title contender Jayson Velez of Puerto Rico in ten rounds in his last fight in July at the Bubble at MGM Grand.

“This is one of the most anticipated fights of the year. Some will be rooting for me some will be rooting against me. The main thing is to give a great fight,”

History has proven that each time two great Mexican fighter’s step into the ring they lay it all on the line. From the days of Zamora Zarate to Barrera Morales, Marquez Vasquez. Berchelt talked about his days growing up as a fan and watching the great fights.

“Since I was 16, I have dreamed of a fight like this. I remember watching Barrera Morales, Barrera Marquez, Vasquez Marquez big fights in which Mexican fighters have laid it all in the ring,” Berchelt on the Mexican classics. “There have been many great fights between Mexican fighters in the past they have been wars, classics. The Barrera Morales trilogy is the best. Now the bar has been set high for us this Saturday,”

Mexican boxing has had some of the best rivalries and classic bouts. Come fight night all of Mexico will be tuned as this is the biggest fight in Mexico. Saturday night we anticipate it to be another classic night for Mexican boxing and boxing in general. A fight the sport needs.

“I know all of Mexico will be watching. Everyone knows what happens when two great Mexican’s are matched up. Boxing is deceiving. You never know what is going to happen. It can end early, late, or go the distance,” Berchelt said. “Saturday will get it on and beat the shit out of each other. Expect a great fight it doesn’t matter what happens this is a fight everyone wants to see, and we will definitely come out and fight.”
