Crawford Ashley Youtube channel

Post by Old bones Ian »

Crawford's youtube channel the spiritual boxer, its brilliant, sometimes he looks like an old man with his dressing gowns and fingerless gloves on sat at home talking about his views on boxing and life, then when you see him in the gym showing how to box, he looks in great nic and moves well. Comes across as a top bloke.

Like he says you might not agree with what he says, but its just his opinion and he likes the man he is.

Believe it or not, and I’m going to get slated for this.... his son is at York uni and Crawford messaged me to see which gym he should go to. Crawford trains at Murtaghs unlicensed gym. Incredible knowledge and still stupid power.

Have you heard his Tris Dixon interview? He’s completely at peace with himself.

Crawford's real full name is Gary Crawford. His elder brother, Glen, won the ABA light-heavyweight title in 1982 at Wembley with a decision over Repton's Bobby Parkes and then just disappeared. Wonder what he's up to.

I know, but people keep setting up fake accounts going mad I’d if I say I know them. Strange individuals. He’s in Lee Murtaghs film, The Straightner with Herbie Hide and a few others.

Really enjoyed those.

It's true Piper was as protected as a fighter can get and he talks like he was an elite class multi weight world champ!

Fair play that he got as much out of the sport as possible but he makes Paul Smith look like he has low self esteem!

I have the Lee Murtagh DVDs of his fight with Camacho Jr and all the build up, Whats The Straightner about Mick? Where can i find this one?

I really like lee, My grandson went to his gym at East End Park when he lived that way in Leeds to train with the other kids. I really liked Lee's ethic and the time he spent with the kids.

Nicky Piper wasn't the most protected fighter out there and also gave Ashley a very tough fight.

Piper proved his worth before turning professional winning an ABA title. You don't pick and choose who you box in the ABA's.

Having met Piper and recently listened to him do a Pod with Tris Dixon he doesn't come across how he's being described. Piper has every right to be proud of his career and actually sounds like one of the most content retired boxers I can think of.

Yes and no. As a person, I have only met him briefly once, I didn't take to him but that was more to do with his on screen persona.
As a fighter, and being an ex boxer myself I would have killed for his talent and achievements.
Yes he was protected and given opportunity but I would never begrudge a fighter being well managed.
Nevertheless I think he very much overrates himself, he was an ABA and a commonwealth champ which I feel is his level, a damn good level but he talks like he was a multi weight world champ.
Maybe the likes of Crawford Ashley begrudges him more because he beat Piper on short notice but didn't get the same opportunity, but as I said you can't blame the Welshman for being well managed or for Ashley being poorly managed.

Yes fair play he did get his shots.
But to be fair to Piper, getting put in with Carl Thompson, Nigel Benn and Darius Michaczewski isn't exactly being protected...😳

Thompson was a short notice job when they didn't realise how good he was, Benn and Michalski were world title shots and the Pole was an end of career payday because of his connections.
However he was winning ageing Barber until he got caught and the Ashley fight was great where he showed real balls.
He certainly is one of the better fighters to have come out of Wales in recent years but isn't fit enough to carry JCs jockstrap. Nevertheless I'm nowhere near enough fit enough to carry Pipers!
I'm not a hater and don't mean to come across as such, for example if he were to come on this forum I would be very respectful and feel he would be a valuable addition.
I have defended Paul Smith in the past as I think he was a valuable poster on here but he rubbed some people up the wrong way because he was too defensive and thought he was better than he was.
For me both Smith and Piper have a similar level which of course was damn good but I reckon both overrate themselves.

Piper was unbeaten and expected to beat Thompson when they met in 1991, even though he conceded almost 10 pounds. The Welshman had destroyed most of his opponents, including a 12-second win over John Ellis while Thompson had been stopped by Crawford Ashley and lost a couple of times abroad but did score a solid points win over former Olympian Terry Dixon. In the event, Thompson needed only three rounds to overwhelm the Welshman.
True, Piper won an ABA title but it was a really weak year (1989) because the Scots had walked out of the ABA semi-finals in Blackburn in a row over headguards. That allowed an ordinary Navy southpaw (Les Hudson) a bye straight through to the light-heavyweight final, where Piper floored and outpointed him. Hudson showed wonderful sportsmanship on the night, unlike Henry Akinwande a fight later when he ignored Herbie Hide after outpointing him.

I think it was a Nigerian thing but Akinwande had already enraged the amateur boxing community when he refused to wear his Lynn colours into the ring, instead opting for an England vest. It was the first time in the long history of the Lynn club that any of their boxers had ever done that.

P.S. Were you one of those who kicked off after Henry was slung out?

Fair enough. :TU:

I went and had a closer look at his record, to remind myself of who his best wins where against and on reflection it isn't the best is it. Yes, he went in with some names but never won those fights.

Henry Akinwande was a horrible, arrogant idiot and one of a select few who could give Johnny Nelson a run for his money in stinking out an arena with dire performances.

My mate used to box with him at the Lynn AC and remembered that on one occasion on their way to the gym on the old style double decker buses, Akinwande threated to punch the bus conductor just for asking him to pay his fare !

I was on the coaches, gave it some gob, but was only 13. The lads Henry’s age were a rough crowd. I thought the arena was going to go up.

Wharton was lost to the amateurs at that point. OK, he shouldn't have thrown the punch to the stomach after the bell to end the first round but it was a nothing punch and Gloucester southpaw Seymour Johnson had goaded him (and then pretended to be hurt by the punch). Referee Dave McCann waited for the start of the second round to throw out Wharton. The timing was cruel and McCann applied the letter of the law but a public warning would have been fairer.
