Jimmy Ellis lost in the 1960 Olympic Trials to a guy named McClure in the light middleweight division. McClure went on to win a gold medal in the 1960 Olympics. McClure was probably the best middle division amateur boxer of that era winning a bunch of things including the National AAU Championship twice and the Pan- American Games.

If Michael Moore is considered, then Mitch Green should be as well. 64-7, 51 kayoes, only lost to the elite, for the most part.

Moore and Green don't really belong in the discussion when there are guys like Lomachenko and Papp , and then the Cuban career amateur greats with like 2-3 olympic golds and multiple world championships. A level down you have a guy like Istavan Kovacs who was Olympic champ + bronze medalist, multiple time world champ, 3x euro champ, etc.

Some of the guys in this thread couldn't even make a dent past national level.

McClure was probably the best middle division amateur boxer of that era winning a bunch of things including the National AAU Championship twice and the Pan- American Games.

Wilbert McClure was named Outstanding Amateur Boxer in the U.S. in 1959. McClure not only won the Pan American Games in 1959 as well as the National AAU Championship in 1959 (as well as 1960) in the middleweight division, but was the Intercity Golden Gloves Champion in 1959 and won the Chicago Tournament of Champions in 1959 (and 1958) in the 160 lb. division. McClure also was the International Diamond Belt Champion in 1958 in Mexico City. Of course, McClure won a Gold Medal in the 1960 Olympics in Rome in the light middleweight division. Quite an amateur resume.

Jimmy Ellis losing to McClure in the 1960 Olympic Trials (on points) was kind of like losing in the Olympic Trials to Floyd Patterson in 1952 at middleweight or to Cassius Clay at light heavyweight in the 1960 Olympic Trials. Makes me wonder if Ellis would have gotten a Gold Medal in the 1960 Olympics if McClure was not around.

I go with Mark Breland 110-1. His only loss was to Daryl Anthony which he avenged in the pros with a 3rd round knockout.

Loma only had 1 loss I think too (and that was in the world championship gold medal match and avenged multiple times), plus far more than 110 wins and 2x Olympic gold, 3x worlds, etc

A glance at Leon Spinks 178-7 133 KO's amateur record looked to be the stuff of a boxing ATG. His pro career he turned out to be an aggressive journeyman lucky enough to be a contender and super lucky to be a champion.

Another amateur juggernaut Courage Tshabalala ran a record 72-1 with 72 consecutive knockouts, all 72 by 1st round KO. (take that Ali Raymi!) Only to go into the pros and garner a respectable but not awe-inspiring 26-4 record.
Anytime Courage would fight someone with higher than journeyman skill level he would get KO'd.

*both am records could be bullshit, managers are good liars and no resource is realiable to check out every am fight.

I know... Courage vs Darroll Wilson was one of the best barn burners I've ever seen. Wilson was as good as knocked out and came back to stop Courage. It was right up there with Foreman-Lyle and Cooper-Moorer.

so like 8-9 losses for curry here, and it's only a partial record, and curry did very little of note internationally

his amateur greatness is a bit of a fraud built around the fake mythical totally unverified 404-4
