Ring City To Air 14 Shows in 2021, Migrate To Peacock Streaming Service In 2022

The forthcoming shutdown of NBC Sports Network will not leave boxing’s newest series without a home.

Plans remain firmly in place for Ring City USA to move forward not only in 2021 but also in the following year despite the shakeup at NBCUniversal in shutting down NBCSN by year’s end. The news over the weekend left boxing fans wondering what will happen to the network’s upstart boxing series, which debuted last November and has run three shows to date.

The answer is that plenty more will come, with the next calendar year to feature the same plan that was in place upon the series’ inception.

NBC platforms will carry 14 installments of the promoter-agnostic live boxing series in 2021, network insiders have informed BS.com. Six shows will likely air prior to the start of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics which will run across all NBCUniversal platforms from July 23rd-Aug. 8th. Eight more shows will run after the Olympics, whether on NBCSN or on another NBC-owned property.

From there, the plan is for the series to migrate to NBCUniversal’s Peacock streaming platform at the start of 2022. A similar journey awaits several other programs currently airing on NBCSN, while programming rights for the National Hockey League (NHL) playoffs, NASCAR and other series will move to NBCUniversal-owned USA Network.

“We’re all aware of how quickly the media landscape is evolving, and our Company is taking thoughtful steps to stay ahead of these trends wherever possible and, in many instances, help set them,” Pete Bevacqua, chairman of NBC Sports Group said in a company-wide memo, a copy of which has been obtained by Boxing Scene. “This will make USA Network an extraordinary power platform in the media [marketplace] and give our sports programming a significance audience boost.”

Ring City USA’s migration to NBCUniversal’s Peacock platform won’t represent a drastic culture change. The series has already aired on Ring City’s Twitch channel, which has also carried preliminary bouts that were not included in the main broadcast for its Dec. 3rd and Dec. 17th shows.

The 2021 season premiere—which now carries a working date of March 4—will feature a rescheduled junior middleweight bout between knockout artist Serhii Bohachuk (18-0, 18KOs) and Los Angeles’ Brandon Adams (21-3, 13KOs). The crossroads fight was initially due to headline the Dec. 3rd show, only for Bohachuk to have to withdraw after testing positive for COVID-19.

Adams went on to face serviceable late substitute Sonny Duversonne, whom he stopped inside of two rounds at a makeshift venue outside of Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood, California. The famed gym—owned and operated by Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach—hosted all three entries of Ring City USA in 2020, although new venues are being sought for the 2021 season.

As for its move to a streaming platform in 2022, the series will remain in good hands.

Peacock has already reached 26 million subscribers as of the last reported count in December. The service launched exclusively to Comcast-owned Xfinity Flex subscribers last April before going global in July, at which point it had already reached 10 million subscribers. Projections from Comcast foresee 35 million subscribers to Peacock by the end of 2024.

Viewers will have three options to take in the service: Premium Free (with ads), Peacock Premium for $4.99/month and Peacock Premium (ad-free) for $9.99/month.

For now, boxing fans can rest assured that current viewership can be obtained through the same services they enjoyed at the series inception last November.

Two weeks later on March 18, former super featherweight world titlist Alberto Machado (22-2, 18 KOs) faces undefeated rising prospect Hector Tanajara (19-0, 5 KOs) in a 10-round lightweight main event.

Ring City reveals full line-up for next week

Ring City USA announced its undercard for its March 18th event, the second installment of a three-event residency in Puerto Rico. The three-fight main card will begin at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT on NBC Sports Network in the United States and Puerto Rico, and on Twitch for fans outside of the U.S, live from Albergue Olimpico (Olympic Center) in Salinas.

The six-fight event is headlined by another Puerto Rico vs. Mexico ring rivalry as Alberto Machado (22-2, 18 KOs) of Puerto Rico, battles Angel ‘Tashiro’ Fierro (17-1-1, 13 KOs) of Tijuana, in a ten-round lightweight bout. Machado was previously slated to fight undefeated prospect Hector Tanajara who was forced to withdraw due to illness. The co-feature sees Puerto Rico's Jose ‘Chiquro’ Martinez, (21-1-2, 14 KOs) clashing with three-time world title challenger Israel ‘Jiga’ Gonzalez (26-4, 11 KOs) of Mexico, in a ten-round bantamweight bout. A six-round light heavyweight fight will round out the main card on NBC Sports Network featuring Irish Joe Ward, (2-1, 2 KOs) looking to avenge his pro debut setback against California's Marco ‘El Muneco’ Delgado, (7-1, 5 KOs).

The 28 year-old Jose Martinez looks to stay in the win column following a second-round knockout of Yeison Vargas in February 2020. His last four victories have come by knockout.

Following a hard-fought twelve-round decision loss to pound-for-pound great Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez in October 2020, the 24 year-old Israel Gonzalez defeated Samuel Gutierrez just two months later in December 2020. Martinez has also challenged Khalid Yafai and Jerwin Ancajas for their title belts in the last three years..

Fighting at Madison Square Garden in 2019, Ward suffered a knee injury in the second round which delivered Delgado a technical knockout victory. Ward bounced back with two first-round knockouts in December 2020 in Mexico. Since the victory over Ward, Delgado has continued his winning ways with a six-round decision over previously undefeated Burley Brooks in December 2020 in Arlington, Texas.

Headlining the Twitch undercard broadcast, which begins at 6:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. PT, Maricela ‘La Diva’ Cornejo, (13-4, 5 KOs) of Los Angeles faces off against Alma Ibarra (7-1, 4 KOs) of Monterrey, Mexico. In the last three years, Cornejo has twice come up short against unified super middleweight champion Franchon Dezurn-Crews in her quest to win a world title. Sandwiched between the two losses, Cornejo was victorious in a tremendous performance against veteran Erin Toughill on January 27, 2019 in front of her hometown fan

A winner of her first seven fights, Ibarra looks to return to the win column following a hard-fought ten-round decision loss to undefeated interim WBA junior middleweight titlist Raquel Miller on November 23, 2019.

In an eight-round flyweight battle, former WBO 108-pound champion Angel ‘Tito’ Acosta, (21-2, 21 KOs), of San Juan, battles Gilberto Mendoza (17-9-3, 8 KOs) of Modesto, Calif. The 30 year-old Acosta made three successful defenses of his world title before losing to Elwin Soto in June 2019. In his last fight in October 2019, Acosta stopped Raymond Tabugon in the fifth round.

The upset-minded Mendoza hits the ring following a hard-fought decision loss to undefeated Mexican Sergio Rios Jimenez.

Rounding out the card in a six-round junior lightweight battle, Edwin ‘The Chin’ Valentin (9-0, 8 KOs) will fight in his hometown of Salinas when he faces veteran Hector Marengo (7-14-4, 4 KOs) of Arecibo, Puerto Rico.

Ring City USA Boasts Series-Best TV, Online Ratings In Back-To-Back Shows

Word is finally getting around regarding boxing’s newest televised boxing series.

The two most recent installments of NBC Sports Network’s Ring City USA boasted series-best ratings, along with the March 25 edition generating a record-setting audience through its Twitch livestream. The March 18 show averaged 125,000 viewers on NBC Sports Network, far among the most watched among the six events to air live since the series debuted last November according to Nielsen Media Research.

The headlining act for the series’ best performing card to date featured Tijuana’s Angel Fierro (18-1-1, 14KOs) recovering from two knockdowns to score a dramatic 6th round knockout of former 130-pound titlist Alberto Machado. The bout aired live from Albergue Olympico in Salinas, Puerto Rico.

Headlining the three-event set finale, Amanda Serrano (40-1-1, 30KOs) further established herself as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world following a 9th round stoppage of Argentina’s Daniela Bermudez (29-4-3, 10KOs). The card aired live from Plaza del Quinto Centenario in Old San Juan, with the famed El Morro historical landmark serving as the backdrop for a televised tripleheader which averaged 106,000 viewers on linear television.

The show also drew more than 13,000 unique visitors on Ring City USA’s Twitch channel which livestreamed the event. The figure serves far and away as the series’ best, in fact becoming the first Ring City card to crack 10,000 unique visitors on its Twitch channel, along with generating more than 264,000 views for the entire show through that platform.

Opening the three-show block, returning participant Brandon Adams rallied from a significant scorecard deficit to drop and stop previously unbeaten Serhii Bohachuk in the 8th round of their junior middleweight bout. The come-from-behind knockout topped the March 4 telecast from Municipal Boxing Gym Felix Pagan Pintor in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, drawing an average of 93,000 viewers during its live telecast, along with a significantly increased 133,000 viewers during a March 12 encore edition also on NBCSN.

Overall, the three shows—all of which aired live from Puerto Rico—enjoyed a 46% viewership increase from the three-show set marking the series debut beginning last November. The first three cards—Nov. 19, Dec. 3, and Dec. 17—all aired from the Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood, California.

The series is due to return in April, though the location for the next event block has yet to be revealed.
