Press Release | Savannah Marshall vs. Femke Hermans on Benn-Vargas Card, April 10

Savannah Marshall will make the first defence of her WBO Middleweight World Title against former World Champion Femke Hermans on Saturday April 10, live on Sky Sports in the UK and on DAZN in the U.S. and more than 200 countries and territories.

Marshall (9-0, 7 KOs) stopped Hannah Rankin in seven rounds to win the vacant WBO Title last October, the former amateur World Champion was a class above her Scottish rival from the opening bell and managed to go one better than her old foe Claressa Shields by ending the fight inside the distance.

Hermans (11-3, 4 KOs), another former opponent of Shields, took the American star the distance in a challenge for her WBC, WBA and IBF Middleweight crowns in December 2018, before falling short in a challenge for the IBF Super-Middleweight Title against Elin Cederroos four months later.

She won the vacant WBO Super-Middleweight World Title by outpointing Nikki Adler on away territory in Germany back in May 2018, and will be hoping to cause another upset when she locks horns with Hartlepool's Marshall.

The 31-year-old from Londerzeel in Belgium picked up the vacant EBU European Middleweight Title with a unanimous decision against Russia's Luiza Davydoza in December and her latest World Title challenge will be the first time that she has fought in the UK.

“I’m really happy and I can’t wait for fight night in three weeks’ time," said Marshall. "I’m very aware of Femke Hermans, a very good fighter. She’s been in with the best, she’s a former WBO World Champion, so I’m sure she’s going to try and get her belt back.

“I know she’s no pushover and I’m looking forward to getting in there. For me, this is probably my toughest test to date. The reigning European Champion. She lost out on a close decision to the World Super-Middleweight Champion, so I know it’s going to be a tough fight.

“I never go into a fight thinking I’m going to stop someone but I know if I land, whoever I land on, I will hurt them. I’m just looking forward to putting on a good display and showcasing my skills.”

Marshall vs. Hermans is part of a big night of action on April 10, rising Welterweight star Conor Benn (17-0, 11 KOs) defends his WBA Continental Title against Samuel Vargas (31-6-2, 14 KOs) in the main event.

Conor Benn is eyeing a huge domestic clash with Amir Khan or Kell Brook should he get past Samuel Vargas on Saturday April 10, but ‘The Destroyer’ insists there is no chance of him overlooking the Canadian-Colombian warrior as he puts his WBA Continental Title on the line once more, live on Sky Sports in the UK and on DAZN in the U.S. and more than 200 countries and territories.

Rising Welterweight star Benn (17-0, 11 KOs) turned in a career-best performance last time out in November as he dominated Germany’s Sebastian Formella over ten impressive rounds, outfighting and outboxing the former IBO World Champion at the top of the bill at The SSE Arena, Wembley.

The Essex native, 24, has come on leaps and bounds since making his professional debut at The O2 in London back in April 2016, and is arguably one of Britain’s most improved fighters in recent years. A win over Vargas next weekend would further enhance his reputation as one of the hottest properties in the 147lbs division.

“He’s an experienced fighter,” said Benn. “He’s got tonnes of heart. He’s got tonnes of grit and sheer determination that so many fighters lack. He brings the heat! This ain’t going to be a one-two lights out. It isn’t going to be one of them. This is going to be a hard fight. This is going to be me getting stuck straight in and us two going at it in there. It’s going to be one hell of a fight and that’s what I’m preparing for.

“He gave Amir Khan hell. Amir Khan got saved by the bell and by the grace of God three or four times in that fight. He had him on the deck. I know Khan’s chin isn’t that credible but he’s a well-respected fighter. He’s achieved everything that I want to achieve in the sport. This is going to be a harder fight than people think in my opinion.

“I made the mistake once of overlooking an opponent and I hit the deck twice. I can go back to that fight because it was a career-defining moment for me. I had to ask myself how badly I wanted it. It taught me to never overlook an opponent. I thought, ‘what’s he going to do to me?’. Boom, straight one-two. That was a massive reality check for me. Since then I don’t overlook opponents.

“I’m not overlooking Vargas, but what doors open after him? I want a big domestic fight still. Someone that I can take that experience off. The Amir Khans, the Kell Brooks. The Josh Kelly fight is still there if he’s still fighting. The Amir Khan fight would be one hell of a fight. That would be a great British clash. Amir Khan was a fighter I looked up to and so was Kell Brook. Why not put me in with one of them after Vargas?

“This is definitely going to be an entertaining fight for the public. This is going to be one that you don’t want to miss. This is going to be a steppingstone in my career. It’s going to be a massive fight. It’s going to be a great fight. It’s going to be a hard fight. I’m going to have to show grit, determination, hunger, skill and power – the full shebang!”

well i mean like 80 percent of tv and movies these days are people fighting or shooting each other, all of which is fake. its just another form of entertainment.....i view it more as theatre than sports. dont watch it these days but i can see the appeal

Good fight for Benn this, could potentially be a tough night, Vargas is tough ans durable, only top guys like Spence, Danny Garcia and Vergil Ortiz have been able to put him away, although Khan beat him convincingly as far as the cards were concerned it was a tough night for him, got dropped and hurt pretty bad, i like Benn for the win here, I'd be impressed if he could stop Vargas but i think he wins on points, reckon it'll be a good hard fought win,

In saying that Khan was too negative at times, Benn looks to seek and destroy, maybe he stops Vargas, Benn has a good engine to keep pressing like he did against Formella

vargas could take a few steps down from world level guys and still get stopped- having fought some big names flatters him when it comes to the 'only been stopped by the best' stuff'. youll notice he either basically fights crap or top guys. and when it comes to actually winning, his level is quite low indeed

he's a punch bag and it will show vs benn. the last beating he took was brutal. i guess its a good fight if benn's team want him in there with a flesh punching bag, i guess the meat from rocky wasnt available

Uninteresting, yes, but seems to be where I get most of my joy betting

I think Vargas goes the distance. Even taking an absolute shoeing against Vergil Ortiz Jr, he never looked like going down or quitting (you could even hear him trashtalking in between eating combinations). Benn doesn't have Ortiz' size, KO ratio or (yet) his ability to put combinations together. That said, every chin cracks eventually, and Benn has definitely developed his power, so it's quite possible I'm wrong and Benn pulls it off.

Vargas isn't the guy to show up Benn, not now anyway.
Still, I think this is going to be entertaining. It's the right level for Benn to keep improving because Vargas should give him rounds.
If Benn does a convincing job on Vargas, he would arguably become a contender.

I’m quite looking forward to the Benn fight. He’s rarely in a bad one and I think Vargas will persuade him to go for it.

Randomly my dad was saying on Saturday that he was already looking forward to the fight. Apparently Sky have been showing a load of his earlier fights heavily over the last 2 weeks to push the fight and it’s clearly got him excited!

Farooq is watchable but I don’t know much about his opponent so who knows and it’s a shame that Marshall’s opponent has changed yet again.

The rest of the undercard is poor but it’s amazing how much promotion to the Courtney/Bridges fight has had. Neither are genuine world class but it’s getting pushed more on social than the Benn fight!

You may well be right but I still think it’s an interesting fight to see how good Benn is. He made the Formella fight look easy but so did Porter (who’s the on person I rate on Formella’s record).

porter is like top 3 in the world tbf, sammy vargas always gets stopped when he faces anyone near that

formella has beaten better opponents than vargas has (arriaza and mbgene, the latter who was looking like a pretty solid prospect himself) and is a better boxer, would outpoint him clearly and is tougher to hit- requires more work to make the openings. vargas needed a hometown gift to beat that finnish guy benn iced in 2.

i like conny and predict a world title, but vargas is so bleh and overused, one of my peeves is these totally overrecycled guys. and he got a seriously unhealthy beating last fight that mustve chipped away at him. i just do not understand the appeal of these fights that are 'he'll pound him but will he stop the punch bag"

my guess is that benn clearly wins every round, eventually ref jumps in with vargas standing. some ppl will try to sell it as having been fun when it was all one-way traffic and no drama, with benn pounding the canadian heavy bag and never looking threatened
