Warren: Herring-Frampton Is the Kind Of Fight We Like, A Tough, 50/50 Fight
“It’s going to be great to get Carl out and get Herring over here,” promoter allegedly told IFL TV’s Umar Ahmed. “It’s a chance for Carl to become Ireland’s first-ever three-weight world champion which would be a massive thing and obviously our first world title fight back.”
The only remaining roadblock is whether the WBO rules in favor of an appeal filed by the legal team for unbeaten former featherweight titlist Shakur Stevenson (15-0, 8KOs), Herring’s mandatory challenger. An argument has been made that Herring’s voluntary defense versus Frampton falls outside the deadline imposed by the WBO for the fight to have taken place by Dec. 31, 2020 without exception.
A ruling is expected in the coming days by the sanctioning body, though the sense is that the title fight more than a year in the making will finally see the light of day. It just won’t take place in front of a rabid pro-Frampton crowd in Belfast as originally intended—or in front of any crowd, for that matter,
"In the environment we’re in without any live gates, Herring is just going into a neutral venue,” suggests Warren. “If he were going into Belfast where we wanted to put it (prior to the pandemic), he would be going into the lion’s den. It’s going to be a venue with no participants.
“It’s a tough fight, a 50/50 fight. Those are the fights we like.”

Herring vs. Frampton Cleared To Move Forward With WBO Title At Stake
Jamel Herring is free to move forward with his title reign in present form.
Boxing Scene has learned that a path has been cleared for Herring to defend his WBO junior lightweight title versus Belfast’s Carl Frampton. The two are due to collide on Feb. 27 in the United Kingdom, though previously under protest from unbeaten former featherweight titlist Shakur Stevenson who sought to enforce his status as mandatory challenger.
That is no longer an issue.
Herring is approved to enter the previously agreed upon voluntary title defense versus Frampton (28-2, 16 KOs), with the condition that the winner next face Stevenson. A prior agreement called for Herring-Frampton to take place by no later than Dec. 31, 2020, a distinction which was flagged by Stevenson’s legal team in demanding that the former featherweight titlist get his due title shot in lieu of rescheduling the oft-postponed aforementioned clash.
A compromise instead came of the situation. The original order called for the Herring-Frampton winner to face Stevenson no later than 120 days after the completion of their contest, which would include a 30-day negotiation window.
The time frame for the fight to take place has been trimmed to 90 days, with the mandatory title fight to take place by no later than the end of May. Additionally, the winner of the Feb. 27 contest will only have five days from the end of the fight to negotiate terms with Stevenson to avoid entering a purse bid hearing to immediately follow.
An inquiry placed by BS.com to the WBO went unreturned as this goes to publish.
Herring (22-2, 10 KOs) will attempt the third defense of the 130-pound title he claimed in a May 2019 points win over Japan’s Masayuki Ito. The Long Island, New York-bred southpaw scored a 12-round decision win over unbeaten mandatory contender Lamont Roach Jr. in Nov. 2019, which came three weeks prior to Frampton’s debut at junior lightweight in a 10-round win over unbeaten Tyler McCreary.
Plans at the time called for a head-on collision to take place last June 13th in Frampton’s hometown of Belfast, Northern Ireland. The ongoing coronavirus pandemic shut down that event, with both boxers left to take separate showcase bouts which aired live last summer on ESPN.
Frampton handled his business, scoring a 7th round knockout of late substitute Darren Traynor last August at the famed York Hall in Bethnal Green, England. Three weeks later, Herring survived an assortment of roughhousing tactics from Puerto Rico’s Jonathan Oquendo, who was ultimately disqualified after eight rounds of action last September at MGM Grand Conference Center in Las Vegas.
Herring suffered a cut and a scratched cornea which further delayed rescheduled plans to face Frampton last December. The WBO was forgiving of such circumstances as well as the year-end lockdown in the United Kingdom in allowing this bout to proceed without further interruption.
Stevenson (15-0, 8 KOs) moved up to junior lightweight last June following a brief stay as a featherweight titlist. The 2016 Olympic Silver medalist abandoned his 126-pound title reign in exchange for a number-one WBO ranking at 130 pounds. Two wins have followed at the weight—a 6th round stoppage of Felix Caraballo last June, followed by a 10-round shutout of Toka Kahn-Clary last December, with both fights taking place in Las Vegas.
Should the Herring-Frampton winner fail to comply with the modified order, the WBO junior lightweight title will be declared vacant and with Stevenson first in line to challenge for the belt versus the next highest ranked contender.

Anyone subscribed to Carl's YouTube channel? He's doing like a weekly video diary of his camp, home life etc ahead of his next fight, quite decent. Hope he pulls off the win.

I wouldn't mind if this match is changed from Feb. 27- that date is way too overbooked for me.

Herrings odds of 5/4 look big to me. No methods yet but i'm backing him to stop frampton. I know hes not a big puncher, but i think this fight will show how faded carl is and hes fighting two weights above where he was truly world class. Herring will look huge, can see it being a beat down.

i agree with a lot of that, but herring is pretty pants tbh, not many results would surprise me too much here although i think frampton, even if past his best and much smaller, still has enough not to get beaten up by a guy like herring

Maybe not big, but decent considering Frampton 8/13. Hoping that herring to win by stoppage/ko will be around 3/1, then its worth a bet.Coco wrote: ↑31 Jan 2021, 14:54I fancy the American too, but don't see 5/4 bigBigdogsnose wrote: ↑31 Jan 2021, 14:23 Herrings odds of 5/4 look big to me. Something fishy about this fight. Luckily we are in lockdown cos if we weren't and fans were allowed in the plaice they'd never fillet... ![[icon_knockout.gif] :KO:](./images/smilies/icon_knockout.gif)

I think Herring beats him. I think Frampton’s looked nowhere near as good since swapping McGuigan for Moore

Really good fight - I think Herring probably wins though but hope I’m wrong.
We’re c.3 weeks away now - still no undercard announced and no other shows announced for FW/BT. What’s FW waiting for? There’s been lots of talk of Cacace/Woodstock but still nothing confirmed.

Undercard Information
The highly anticipated British super featherweight title showdown between Anthony Cacace and Lyon Woodstock will go ahead on Saturday February 27, acting as chief support for the WBO world title clash between Jamel Herring and Carl Frampton.
Tommy Fury also returns on a packed bill that includes super-flyweight Kaisy Khademi (8-0) bidding to double his belt tally by adding the vacant IBF European to his WBO European title against Birmingham’s Ijaz Ahmed (7-2).
Stoke’s hugely popular middleweight star Nathan Heaney (10-0) takes on a tough domestic test in the shape of Ryan Oliver (7-2), with thrilling lightweight prospect Sam Noakes (4-0) going in against the unbeaten Delmar Thomas (5-0).
Three professional debuts complete the card, with ABA champion Masood Abdulah set to introduce himself over four rounds at super featherweight, Amaar Akbar at super lightweight and Adan Mohamed at super bantamweight.
Exclusively live on BT Sport, ‘The Jackal’ Carl Frampton bids to make history by becoming Ireland’s first ever three-weight world champion by parting the champion, former Marine Herring from his belt.
The night will now have a further Belfast twist with the addition of the 18-1 Cacace taking on the 12-2 Leicester man Woodstock in a collision that has won widespread approval from boxing fans.
What should be a particularly fan-friendly encounter was first due to take place during last summer’s post-lockdown series but was ultimately delayed due to Cacace being hospitalised after suffering an infection following dental surgery.
This will represent a first defence for the 32-year-old of the title he won by defeating former champion Sam Bowen in Birmingham back in November 2019.
Promoter allegedly said of his first show of the year: “We have put together a strong supporting cast for Carl’s big night where he is seeking to make history in what should be a compelling clash against Jamel Herring with the WBO world title at stake.
“We are making it an even bigger night for Belfast by adding Anthony Cacace’s first defence of his British title against Lyon Woodstock. Everybody seems to be looking forward to this one because it has the makings of a fantastic fight with both men happy to go to war.
“2021 is a year to keep Tommy Fury busy and get him the experience he needs to push on in the light heavyweight division. Boxing is what he wants to do and we will be sure to get him the right fights at the right time.
“Kaisy Khademi can really increase his stock at super flyweight by adding another ranking belt to his collection and furthering the plot of his fascinating life story. I am also looking forward to seeing Sam Noakes continuing his trail of destruction at lightweight against an unbeaten opponent, along with witnessing the professional debuts of three young fighters who come with a top amateur pedigree.”

Frampton has a hand injury so the fight is postponed.
For FW’s only show in February, it’s not looking good.

The only way Frampton can be more unlucky is if an ornament has fell on his other hand

Re: Carl Frampton vs. Jamel Herring - 27 February 2021
There’s some interesting quotes from Herring’s team. They’re implying that the injury is BS and that the fight has been cancelled because FW can’t afford to put it on. When it was announced there was a presumption that ESPN would show it too and pay a decent amount for it.
This isn’t happening as Arum had to distance himself from the fight due to being Stevenson’s promoter and seemingly wanting to show loyalty to him over Herring.
Herring’s team said that they hadn’t received any flight confirmations or an itinerary for the fight and the coms from FW’s team had been poor.
They also said that the fight will go ahead late March now with MTK promoting.

Yeah - Stevenson was mandatory I think but allowed Herring/Frampton to take place if it happened in 2020. Obviously it didn’t so to stop Stevenson pushing for the title to be stripped I think Bob said he wouldn’t be involved with the fight.margaret thatcher wrote: ↑17 Feb 2021, 03:14that's kinda weirdmaverick23 wrote: ↑17 Feb 2021, 03:08 Arum had to distance himself from the fight due to being Stevenson’s promoter and seemingly wanting to show loyalty to him over Herring.
If it is postponed by a month then surely that can’t mean there was a hand injury?
