what makes a trainer special, one like ton burns that can constantly produce talent like 300 national champs from scratch when lots of gyms cant even do 1

do they teach better technique?

better strategy?

have their gym open more so boxers can train more than at most other gyms?

do some areas have more naturally talented kids around them?


primarily interested in guys that take kids from scratch, rather than picking up already successful fighters

Teach fighters the best way that suits them, works toward building their weaknesses, sharpening their strengths, good strategist, strict on the basics, knows about timing, when to do what with a certain fighter, doesn't do all bulls**t showy padwork leaping all round gaff making it all about them,

I think psychology is a big part of it. Know your fighter, get the best out of them. Ingle comes to mind.

reading a fighter , you cant change someone totally, but you can teach him good habbits , its also very psychological like cus d'amato. i think with a top boxer you need some one teaches minor and is all about getting youre fighter in the zone and healthy , for young fighters i think coaches who like trainning fighters

Any of the top class amateur trainers I’ve met just have that extra bit about them. They are all business.

On the flip side you can spot the shite ones too straight away. Asses hanging out of their tracksuits , late and no warm up or kit for their boxers.

A trainer who is schooled enough to work with what the boxer has and maximize what they do best and mitigate what they do worst (Steward). Trainers who have only one way of training (I.E. Abel Sanchez; Teddy Atlas) have to have a boxer who fits their style.

I trained a few golden glove champions in the late 1980s-early 1990s. I was an assistant to my partner. This guy was a mentor and he knew how to get the most of a boxer. He could bring them down and up and knew the mind. He was also a guy who just as he called had a good fight mind. Agreed. I also apprenticed under another who told me fighters have got to be motivated. It does not matter if they are 3 round golden glove fighters 4 round prelim fighter 10 round main event fighters or 12-15 round championship fighters they must be motivated. He also used to say that the closest thing to a pro fight is an amateur fight. How true in front of a crowd with a verdict to be decided. It was the real deal. I was very fortunate to work under not just one but two boxing gurus. We will refer to them as NL and JT. I also believe you must have good communication and establish a trusting relationship with your boxer. Also you must know your guys weak and strong points and be approachable.

My mentor was a stickler on D. Defense is very underappreciated overlooked and taken for granite. It must not be disregarded . Many trainers could focus and concentrate on this aspect. Never underestimate the mind and the mental aspect of any endeavor that you participate in.
