He sounds like from what your saying he had limitations and if his proteges wanted to advance they needed to move on from him. They could only go to a certain level and were robots. Yes being taught and being in there are two entirely different things. Hey i did not have much in ring experience myself . I can tell you this sparring is sometimes overdone. I used to be in gyms were that is all that was done. True it is the acid test if you cannot get past that part then and there you should stop fighting. I worked with a dozen guys that could not get past that part. With that said some overemphasize and overdue sparring. You should concentrate on basics technique and conditioning which to me are sometimes overlooked and underappreciated but are essential. This sport of boxing in not for everyone. You also have to treat each as individuals. Some guys are more stand up point fighters which is fine and well for amateurs but not for pros. I also seen some who were really competitive and did not like to lose a round even in sparring and others who just worked on maybe one thing like a jab footwork etc. This also depends on the individual. I would rather work with someone who was motivated determined eager to learn disciplined consistent dependable rather than someone who had loads of talent but was lazy unmotivated and undisciplined. Gotta wanna. The strongpoints and weaknesses of the certain individuals. No you cannot treat them all the exact same way because we are all different. Getting to know your fighter as an individual and you will learn and try to work on there weaknesses and make the strongpoints even stronger.coneye wrote: ↑08 Feb 2021, 00:54Knew a trainer , who had the rep of being very good ,, and too be honest he was excellent at what he taught , everyone of his lads , were well balanced , punched correctly , and looked very good , they all had good skills , especielly at novice stage his lads were hard to beat , because he simply kept them in the gym for years if need be ,until they honed there skills and were usually too good for other novices ,, BUT they were all excatly the same there style there look , everything about them , I upset him once when i told others he has a machine out the back that clones them ,,,, But i never had a lad lose to any of his ,, someone else asked me why do your lads always beat them , , my answer was because there not clones , my lads are taught from day one to think for themselves and look for openings , if there not there create them .. I just hate getting screamed at over nothing. I’ve seen plenty of coaches line up all the fighters at the end of a session and just go off on one, just berating them for 15 minutes.
It’s a funny one, cos it’s a tough sport and you need to help the kids grow a thick skin and be ready for anything but there’s plenty of coaches who give the impression they’re just bitter and angry. Some of them really enjoy screaming at people.
So I guess a good coach will build them up, instead of breaking them down.

A gym with enthusiastic kids is key. Small successes perpetuate bigger successes. Classic example was the Calzaghe gym.
I am firmly in the camp on ' the boxer makes the trainer'

You know all boxers are different when it comes to training sparring etc. Some like to work on maybe say one or two things i.e. maybe footwork one day the jab one day etc. When they spar they do not look impressive but in the meantime maybe they are working on improving the weaknesses. Then you have the others who are highly competitive and do not like to lose a round even sparring they go all out and a take no prisoners attitude nobody will make them look bad. To each his own sometime they need to be humbled and sometime they need to be motivated. Never underestimate the mental aspect and the mind. I was mentored by two men and the second once told me boxers need to be motivated golden gloves fighters prelim main event or championship caliber. This really hit home and was wise and great advice.Counter-puncher wrote: ↑08 Feb 2021, 17:20I always enjoy your stories about your time coachingconeye wrote: ↑08 Feb 2021, 00:54Knew a trainer , who had the rep of being very good ,, and too be honest he was excellent at what he taught , everyone of his lads , were well balanced , punched correctly , and looked very good , they all had good skills , especielly at novice stage his lads were hard to beat , because he simply kept them in the gym for years if need be ,until they honed there skills and were usually too good for other novices ,, BUT they were all excatly the same there style there look , everything about them , I upset him once when i told others he has a machine out the back that clones them ,,,, But i never had a lad lose to any of his ,, someone else asked me why do your lads always beat them , , my answer was because there not clones , my lads are taught from day one to think for themselves and look for openings , if there not there create them ..
