Eddie Hearns amateur career
After last nights IFL interview with Hearn, Kugan appealed to the boxing community of the early 90’s to find one of Eddie’s three much doubted amateur opponents. All they had to go on was a kid called Francis from Newham. Well, they’ve got him. It’s out tomorrow and should be very funny.

I literally laughed out aloud when Eddie said the win over Francis gave him a top 15 ranking with the WBA!mickey1975 wrote: ↑10 Feb 2021, 17:55 After last nights IFL interview with Hearn, Kugan appealed to the boxing community of the early 90’s to find one of Eddie’s three much doubted amateur opponents. I may have misheard but I’m sure we’ll find out later before talk of the rematch (on PPV at the O2) starts.mickey1975 wrote: ↑11 Feb 2021, 04:19I thought Francis won?maverick23 wrote: ↑11 Feb 2021, 02:59I literally laughed out aloud when Eddie said the win over Francis gave him a top 15 ranking with the WBA!mickey1975 wrote: ↑10 Feb 2021, 17:55 After last nights IFL interview with Hearn, Kugan appealed to the boxing community of the early 90’s to find one of Eddie’s three much doubted amateur opponents. Just watched the video of Eddie/Francis - Eddie certainly wasn’t short of confidence even as a kid!
Re: Eddie Hearns amateur career
Fair play for getting in there, you need big balls to get in a ring, and you need big balls in big business too
Re: Eddie Hearns amateur career
Ha ha! That’s the best ifl interview I‘ve seen! Fair play to Kugan, Eddie and Francis.

He said 12 himself. And I didn’t quite get the explanation. In my region skills bouts weren’t around in those days and you wouldn’t get matched with a 28 bouter after two bouts. It would be 3 1/2 with scoring judges matched in advance.Shhhh wrote: ↑11 Feb 2021, 18:01No. He claims he was 18. How many heavyweights do you know who are 11![]()
Re: Eddie Hearns amateur career
This sounds like this is what was known as a “Gym Show” which is where novice boxers from invited clubs were matched in no winner contests, in a boxing gym with spectators in preparation for carded bouts.
Nowadays they are illegal due to insurance purposes, but go on as “inter-club sparring” or on club shows as “skills” bouts”

So he’s a no bouter then? This wouldn’t go on his card. And a near 30 bout 12 year old is far from a novice. I’ve never heard of one.Kit wrote: ↑11 Feb 2021, 19:25 This sounds like this is what was known as a “Gym Show” which is where novice boxers from invited clubs were matched in no winner contests, in a boxing gym with spectators in preparation for carded bouts.

Re: Eddie Hearns amateur career
I know kids who had loads of Gym shows, but that was because they were under 11, and were just too young to be carded.
Maybe he started young and still wasn't ready to be carded, or maybe significantly over estimating?
