Bigger Shock? Lara KO’s Warrington or Ruiz KO’s Joshua
Hearn has said the Lara-Warrington was a bigger shock.
Both Warrington and Joshua were more than 20-1 favourites.
“This is a much bigger shock because Andy Ruiz is a world-class heavyweight,” Hearn, whose company promotes Joshua and Warrington, told IFL TV following Warrington’s ninth-round knockout defeat at Wembley Arena in London. “Mauricio Lara was not really renowned as a world-class featherweight. You know, fringe guy who can pop a bit, might have ability, young kid. But tonight, he arrived on the world stage. And, you know, devastated as I am, congratulations to him. I’m happy for him, because he’s changed his life tonight, and that’s a nice story. But I would’ve rather the other story. Maybe we’ll get that later in the year.”

I think on paper, Lara-Josh is probably bigger. But the Joshua upset was a lot bigger and more shocking witnessing it happen.
Everything behind it. The build up, the hype. AJ’s US debut etc. Was all looking textbook when AJ dropped Ruiz.. but then a few seconds later, it all changed.

I can't say. I picked Ruiz to have a strong chance against Joshua but I'd watched a lot of Ruiz. I've never watched Lara before. That's probably the same for a lot of people, maybe even the people who made the match.

Ruiz, no doubt. Warrington already had some arguable background preceding the loss. Ruiz was seen just as a meat (and fat) for Joshua.

Warrington losing to Lara was much bigger in my opinion. Lara was a complete unknown and Josh was regarded as number 1.
AJ lost to a man who was a live opponent. Anyone who watches boxing knows that Ruiz can fight he was unlucky not to get the nod against Parker. It was surprising he lost but not a shock.

Ruiz beating Joshua by miles was the bigger upset.
A guy with no Knockout power losing isn't a shock. Even when he's highly rated.

Losing to a complete unknown isn't as shocking as losing to a known tub of lard who isn't impressive, and everybody knows isn't impressive.smiling assassin wrote: ↑15 Feb 2021, 19:10 Warrington losing to Lara was much bigger in my opinion. The man can fight as he proved in the first fight. The manner of the loss was more shocking but the loss itself wasn’tgilgamesh wrote: ↑15 Feb 2021, 19:20Losing to a complete unknown isn't as shocking as losing to a known tub of lard who isn't impressive, and everybody knows isn't impressive.smiling assassin wrote: ↑15 Feb 2021, 19:10 Warrington losing to Lara was much bigger in my opinion. Lara can fight too. Just because nobody ever heard of him didn't mean he couldn't. It just meant nobody was watching to know. You can't ever completely discount a guy that you just know nothing of because he can either be really good or really bad. I'd rather fight a guy that I know is good than a guy I've never heard anything about at all because at least with the guy you know is good you know what you're facing, and yes Ruiz can box, but he should've realistically posed no threat to Joshua. Joshua fighting recklessly had as much to do with that as Ruiz being good.smiling assassin wrote: ↑15 Feb 2021, 19:25The man can fight as he proved in the first fight. You can be a good unknown fighter for sure, but let's face it, the vast majority of the time an unknown guy is brought in (and i mean like, someone even the hardcores dont know)he turns out to be pretty pants
Re: Bigger Shock? Lara KO’s Warrington or Ruiz KO’s Joshua
More often than not yeah, but it's not completely out of the question for it to happen.margaret thatcher wrote: ↑15 Feb 2021, 19:30 You can be a good unknown fighter for sure, but let's face it, the vast majority of the time and unknown guy (and i mean like, someone even the hardcores dont know) is brought in he turns out to be pretty pants

Joshua - Ruiz for me we all knew Ruiz could box and was'nt too bad , Lara , i think the matchmaker just stuffed up did'nt do his homework , Josh was by far the better boxer , but does'nt count for nothing when you face a guy with anvils in his hands , block of granite for a head , and above all the ability to cut the ring off ,,
Re: Bigger Shock? Lara KO’s Warrington or Ruiz KO’s Joshua
Joshua Ruiz for me too. I knew Ruiz could fight and had pedigree, but still didn't expect him to win. Let's not forgot, before it all went tits-up, Joshua had just flattened Ruiz with a huge left hook and victory seemed likely.
An unknown but rated Mexican in the opposite corner, especially in the lower weights, is always a risky assignment.

Re: Bigger Shock? Lara KO’s Warrington or Ruiz KO’s Joshua
The Lara victory was a much bigger shock. The Ruiz-Joshua type upsets happen regularly throughout boxing though less at heavyweight.
Lara was a total unknown with no previous victories over a top 100 opponent. Two losses to average fighters.
Probably Warrington was off form and so a combination of a good shot and and off form fighter.
Can't think JW team would have taken that fight without watching Lara's previous.
Ruiz had already been in a world title fight, we knew he was reasonable top 30 sort of fighter.
Just shows one punch can change a fight. JW or AJ never really recovered from a big shot.

didnt realize lara is only 22, and his losses were at only 17 and 20 years old. could be a bit of jc martinez, who also has an early career loss , was unknown going into the selby fight, then beasted him and has been on a nice run.
