I think he did care once he knew it was serious. He’d been the massive underdog who was being served up by Don King.

Might be he was in the moment of it all and went full warrior-mode or something.

Also, whata war.

Agree with some of OP's.

Julio Cesar Chavez would make my list.
Jake LaMotta. Style-wise and the fact that he could take anything. Nobody wants to fight a guy like that.

Off the top of my head in no order

1: Julio Cesar Chavez for his vicious body punching, I have winced numerous times watching his fights on YouTube

2: Dwight Muhammed Qawi for constant pressure over 12 or 15 rounds, give Evander Holyfield hell for 15 rounds for the World Cruiserweight title.

3: Mike Tyson pre Buster Douglas for his sheer prescence and speed combined with his finishing ability once he had his opponent troubling.

4: Ruslan Provodkinov: Probably one of the hardest bastards to come out of Russia, probably made Tim Bradley and numerous others leave a peace of themselves in the ring after they had been 12 rounds with him.

5: Roberto Duran: The menacing glare is a good place to start.
