Patterson could give him some trouble maybe in spots, but Dempsey would definitely catch him and knock him out somewhere along the way. Probably around the 3rd or 4th round.

Dempsey was usually a fast starter and Patterson often was not. Easy to see a one-round KO for Dempsey in this one.

Dempsey would KO Patterson early. Floyd had no tools to avoid such onslaught. Yes, Patterson could bang himself, but Dempsey was far more likely to take Patterson's shots, than Patterson was able to take Dempsey's ones. A bad matchup for Patterson.

Patterson would have to go with a "safety first" approach to win this.

And being the faster man, he might be willing to get brave.

And that would be a problem. Dempsey is not going anywhere.....so Floyd has to think like Tunney.

And I'm not sure Floyd could muster that sort of patience.

Dempsey would swarm Patterson with his devastating body punches after cutting him off the ropes and KO him in 6 rounds after nailing him with a left hook and right hand.

Dempsey finds Patterson’s chin and takes him out within 3-5 rounds. Maybe with the left hook. Maybe with the right hand. Maybe both.

A lot depends on whether they used the rules from Dempsey's time or Patterson's. In Dempsey's time, if a boxer was knocked down, the other fighter could hit him as he was trying to get up. If Patterson was knocked down first, then Dempsey could have kept knocking Floyd down again and again as he was trying to get up.

In today's rules, I don't know what would have happened.

Well, the knocked down fighter did have to be up before he was supposed to be allowed to be hit. The rules changed during Dempsey's career; not exactly sure when it became the uniform rule. (i.e different states have different rules for awhile).
In 1919, Dempsey was allowed to pounce on Willard in 1919 as soon as he got up. Supposedly by 1923, the .neutral corner rule was in effect when Dempsey fought Firpo. Dempsey ignored it multiple times without repercussions. I think he did go to a neutral corner at least once though.

In the 1921 Carpentier fight, Dempsey seemed to go to a neutral corner sometimes and not other times.

It did look like Dempsey hit Willard a little too soon a couple of times, but I could be wrong. Patterson often did get knocked down in an early round, but he usually recovered. Against Dempsey in 1919, maybe not.

I'd give a distinct edge to Dempsey. However....this is not a Liston type fight. And those of you wanting to bet your house on Dempsey, could be serious danger of being evicted. Both are explosive and neither Dempsey's superlative rep, nor Floyd's less than sterling rep are FULLY deserved. .....and the "art of assumption" could let you down on this one.

I would not bet on this fight. And I would expect Dempsey to win. But Patterson is such a live dog here that lopsided odds would be the smart way to bet.
