Lots and lots of talent and I enjoy watching him fight.

Lack of power might be his issue as he steps up, as mentioned in here already. He was a bit too easy to hit last night too, but I put that down to being a bit emotionally involved ( rik flair woooooooo’s were a tad embarassing! )

I don't say XYZ is going to be the bollocks anymore as you just don't know until they go through the levels. In fact the last prospect I was big on was Dmitry Bivol after his 5th fight and he's doing ok now :D

Last night was the first time I've watched Kelly in full since his debut. Sky compared him to Sugar Ray Leonard, Roy Jones Jr and Vasyl Lomachenko :brick:

Just let the guy develop and learn, it's ridiculous and unnecessary to give him this much hype.

Josh has good attributes and he could not have been matched better for 7 fights. I can't see how he can fight the way he does when he goes through the levels.

I just hope he carries on being matched the way he has.

The comparisons with such names won’t do him any favours. He’s not near that level and has never showed himself to be. I mean, give the lad a chance. Hopefully he and his team keep themselves away from such hyperbole.

Like I put in another thread loading up on single shots with his hands down and catching the occasional left hook in every round didn't do it for me.

I did say he needs to prove it, but he's one of the few Brits I could really see getting right up P4P levels, doesn't mean he will, but most, while they might still have very good careers to be proud off, just clearly will hit their limit before competing will the top P4P guys. Josh Kelly I could see doing it, but like I say could is a key word

I don't remember the comparisons to RJJ and SRL other than saying that he admires them. He's looked better before than last night.

Like I said I think he was fvcking about too much and trying to show off rather than just winning.

He's looked better in the past, but he's going to need to be more focused as he steps up. Still great movement and natural talent

That's mostly what I think he needs to fix.

If he just kept his rear hand up more to be a bit more covered, and used jabs and 1-2s , and then throw in the other stuff more occasionally when appropriate.

I think that can be learned much more easilly than some of his angles etc. which I think are a big thing that separates good boxers from great ones.

He's the boxing equivalent of someone trying fifty yard Steven Gerrard glory balls every time they touch the ball.

JOSHUA KELLY v JOHNNY GARTON

Joshua Kelly withdrew from the above eliminator contest.
So, how come Kelly pulled out of this eliminator for the British title?

Looked like a good opponent for him.

Fair point.

Do you think he was better than Kris George? I certainly see how he'd rather fight for a title than in an eliminator for one. I hope he's not being protected, because then his flaws will likely get worse. Some hard fights is probably what he needs to stop fvcking about.

I don't think that he had to choose between the George fight and the eliminator, did he?

Can he get a straight shot at Skeete?

Hands down and chin out, think what Spence, Crawford and Thurman will make of him when he gets a world title shot. These type of fighters rarely change

If you watched the fight with the sound off and had no idea who he was he wouldnt of impressed you one little bit, Kris George wasnt exactly a box of tricks and anyone a bit special would of figured him out quick sharp

I made this thread a couple of months ago, and everyone agreed with me, then I bumped it because I thought he didn't look great in it, saying he needs to fvck around less, and that I think he was overconfident and naive.

It's pretty impressive how people much foresight people have in hindsight though.

I've just watched his fight with Kris George. The intense staring during the ref's pre-bout instructions, the ridiculous whooo-hooing and the annoying physical tics reminded me more of Tom Cruise than Ray Leonard or Roy Jones.

He looked better when he had his hands up and stopped monkeying around so much.

Why does he feel the need to act like a prat in the ring?

Before you lot get too excited about Kelly's last outing-
George broke both hands, and has a suspected fractured jaw.

Kelly has bags of ability but needs to reign in the flashiness a bit and focus on winning rounds rather than putting on a show.

He should be looking at the British title next but Eddie seems intent on taking him stateside, which may not be a bad idea, but I do like to see fighters win the British before taking the international route.

I'd be interested to see how it is when he can't boss a fighter around. George couldn't throw any meaningful leather back at Kelly because of hand damage. Those later rounds with a live fighter are what I need to see.

I'm not convinced he has the best engine, but we'll see.

interesting to look at this now

not taking a pop at the op, because i could totally get what they were getting at when they talking about kelly in the early stages. the question was could kelly carry it up the levels and straigten out the showboaty stuff. turns out he couldnt and was indeed a bit superficial in the end---keeping in mind of course that he's still a totally decent boxer who made the olympics.

its a good thing to keep in mind:

there are some fighters who just have the style/strengths that make them shine especially bright when they are fighting overmatched opponents at one level. but other guys who may not be as superficially fancy and may not impresse as much at one level miht be able to carry their game up higher in the end.
