Sean Mccomb boxrec rating.

Post by damage »

Why is Sean Mccomb rated in the Irish ratings rather than UK ratings at lightweight when he was born in Northern Ireland & resides in Belfast?

I guess the fact where one is licensed has got nothing to do with his nationality. If he was born in Great Britain and also resides there, he should be ranked as british, not irish. IMHO. John or Andy should know more about this... :TU:

Likeliest it results from his extensive amateur record here. While Northern Irish boxers have been regarded as UK fighters in professional ratings, they definitely represent Ireland as amateurs (unified Amateur Federation for whole isle) except for Commonwealth Games, where they are Team Northern Ireland.

So, whichever nationality we use for someone like McComb, it will end up being partly wrong. I know it is under consideration to add "representing _______" field for amateur boxing which would clarify these cases. Alas, we don't have it yet.

Besides, ever since Good Friday Agreement the people of Northern Ireland have had the right to select either Irish or British citizenship. I don't know which one McComb has, but he could have either one.

The people of Northern Ireland are legally entitled to be Irish or British or both. It is entirely up to them what they are listed as. (But it is a bit annoying when they have fight in the USA and email to be Irish and then have a fight in the UK and email to be British again)

Sean boxes off a BUI licence as do several other boxers residing in Northern Ireland :TU:

I don't think we can go just off the licence, they might have a BBBofC licence and still be Irish.

Correct, McComb self-identifies as Irish and is an Irish citizen.

It would be great, although probably a pain in the ass/not possible to to be able to list them in both.

It'd certainly help me matchmaking.

Realistically, it would be A LOT simpler if Northern Irish fighters where all categorised along with their Southern counterparts. It would really tidy things up in terms of rankings and organisation.

Without making this a political issue, It works in EVERY other sport (with the exception of football) that you care to mention. Name the sport and it's an all-island approach - rugby, cricket, basketball, hockey etc...

I would also point out that brilliant Protestant fighters like Wayne McCullough and Carl Frampton (who both come from staunchly Unionist areas) represented and boxed for Ireland and there was no great drama to it. It really and truly doesn't have to be that big of a deal - until someone wants to bring politics into it....

A bit simplistic and not truthful approach (possibly out of ignorance).

F ex such Northern Irish Olympic medallists as :
Mary Peters from Belfast (pentathlon)
Peter & Richard Chambers from Coleraine (rowing)

did exclusively represent Team GB.

So have in lower international level every N.Irish figure skater of note etc.

But I agree that it seems more of a norm for Northern Irish to represent Ireland than UK. Rate must be 80:20 or so in Olympic sports.

Fair enough, but I was specifically talking about boxing and how protestant heroes can represent Ireland without much hullaballoo...

Coming back to boxing again... It does work on a national level... So.... why not? The only case that can be made for it not being an all-island approach is a sectarian one.

How about the case that amateur boxing in Northern Island is administered by the Irish, professional boxing by the British. Since all amateurs compete as Irish then all pros should compete as British ?

I think it's best left to the boxers to choose what nationality they want to be.

Hi John... I'm all for freedom of choice, in accordance with the Good Friday Agreement. My only grievance is, as I say, it makes ranking the Northern guys as a problem when they seem to be split down the middle.

Not feasible with the database, nationality is a single column, it would mean a lot of refactoring to create multiple nationalities.
