Getting a fighter an early defeat
This sounds moronic but if you look at some fighters and the early loss on their record that benefitted them, is there a benefit of giving a fighter around the 5-0 to 8-0 mark an early loss to highlight a deficiency.
As an example, David Haye at one point was trying to go at 100mph, then the Thompson loss and the way he knuckled down and improved his training camps was absurd.
A less known one in Lee Selby. He suffered a close defeat and improved massively off the back of it.
Is there a case to be made to match a prospect so hard that they may lose and take a loss early in their career?

As long as it’s a reasonable step up.
Nothing wrong with a tough fight.
But it’s gotta be an evenly matched fight at the same level.
Like how we say Marku vs. Charlton.
I would consider Kelly-Ava under this too. Kelly tried his look at Euro level and it showed he wasn’t there. The ‘0’ is gone now. That’s when some fighters start taking more risk.

Re: Getting a fighter an early defeat
i feel like in some ways it can almost be like a weight removed....as long as the fighters team keeps backing them and doesnt just throw them away

Bernard Hopkins Definitely Learned From This!!!!
Re: Getting a fighter an early defeat
Sounds amazingly sane to have that happen as part of the plan. Another poster mentioned it perfectly as a weight being lifted. Focus on learning and developing and not keeping your "0."

I think I agree with your logic.jameswilson wrote: ↑22 Feb 2021, 15:23 This sounds moronic but if you look at some fighters and the early loss on their record that benefitted them, is there a benefit of giving a fighter around the 5-0 to 8-0 mark an early loss to highlight a deficiency.

Just get them well matched fights. Josh Warrington a perfect exampl of this. And Josh Taylor. If they’re good enough, they’ll come through. Anything after five gimmes are pointless.

Did alright for Ricky Burns and Anthony Crolla suffering early set backs.
Degale did alright after his loss to Groves, and similarly Chris Eubank Jr after his loss to Saunders.

He was just the type who was going to go when hit. 8 losses and all by KO. He might have learned that his chin was not good and he shouldn't take chances but you're always going to be hit at a certain level.
