Gilberto Ramirez Inks Multi-Year Pact With Golden Boy Promotions
Press Release
Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez, (41-0, 27 KOs), the Mexican light heavyweight contender and undefeated former world champion, has signed a multi-fight deal with Golden Boy. Details for Ramirez’s imminent return will be announced shortly.
Despite being only 29 years old, Ramirez has over a decade of experience under his belt, debuting as a professional in 2009 and embarking on a career that would see him defeating the likes of Maxim Vlasov, Jessie “Hard Work” Hart and “King” Arthur Abraham, whom he defeated to become the WBO Super Middleweight World Champion. After five defenses of his belt, Ramirez moved up to light heavyweight, where he has scored wins against Thomas Karpency and Alfonso Lopez. With a stunning record of 41-0, Ramirez’s goal is to make history by maintaining his undefeated streak beyond 50 fights as he sets sights on the champions of the division.
“After several discussions, Golden Boy Promotions made the most sense and felt like the best partners for me,” said Gilberto Ramirez. “They understood the goals and the agendas I have and I have full faith in Oscar and the team to make the big fights happen. I look forward to working with them closely and to this new chapter of my career.”
“Mexican boxing has been a worldwide force in this sport for as long as I can remember,” said Oscar De La Hoya, Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy. “Along with its legacy of courageous fighters, it possesses a fanbase with a unique culture and energy that comes alive every single time its fighters step into the ring.”
“That’s why we are delighted to have signed Gilberto Ramirez to a multi-fight deal, an undefeated former world champion from the land of warriors in Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico,” De La Hoya continued. “As we in the United States look towards re-opening to bigger and bigger audiences, we know that Ramirez will bring even more excitement to the stacked 175-pound division as he sets course for all the world champions.”

So much for being a free agent.
He needs a platform.
I guess with DAZN it’s a good thing.
Could have signed with Matchroom USA.
Do GBP have any 175’ers?

Re: Gilberto Ramirez Inks Multi-Year Pact With Golden Boy Promotions
Golden Boy figured out how to get back in on the Canelo money train. Zurdo-Canelo at 175 is inevitable. Gotta hand it to Oscar on this one.

Re: Gilberto Ramirez Inks Multi-Year Pact With Golden Boy Promotions
I’m not too sure. What does Ramirez bring to the table for Canelo to make him want to work with Golden Boy again after their acrimonious split?
When Ramirez was WBO champ he had an early Calzaghe record of fighting nobodies and he’s now signed with a promoter who doesn’t have an obvious route to a title.
I saw an interview with Ryan Garcia earlier after last night’s show. He was very critical of Oscar and saying things like ‘Oscar needs to remember that he works for me....I don’t work for him’. He seems to have a habit of pissing off his fighters over the last 12 months.
Re: Gilberto Ramirez Inks Multi-Year Pact With Golden Boy Promotions
I could see him fighting bivol and maybe callum smith if he moves up. Golden boy will probably also try to feed him kovalev.
Re: Gilberto Ramirez Inks Multi-Year Pact With Golden Boy Promotions
A well-promoted Zurdo at 175 would mean a lot of money for a Cinco De Mayo PPV card or DAZN fight two-three years down the line. There’s only so many bodies Canelo can snatch at 168.maverick23 wrote: ↑28 Feb 2021, 09:37I’m not too sure. Re: Gilberto Ramirez Inks Multi-Year Pact With Golden Boy Promotions
When he was with Top Rank, Gilberto Ramirez used to be the super-middleweight equivalent of Terence Crawford.
He was considered the top-dog at 168lbs (by The RING), but Top Rank wouldn’t (or couldn’t) orchestrate any meaningful fights for him.
In fact, Bob Arum wouldn’t even allow him to compete in the WBSS.
Zurdo’s victories over Jesse Hart and Arthur Abraham are the only highlights of a particularly weak resume.
In my mind, Ramirez is irrelevant (in terms of sporting prestige or commercial value), there’s no reason for anyone at 168lbs or 175lbs to fight him.
And in order to remedy that situation, GBP are going to have to invest heavily, by paying his opponents’ top-dollar to persuade them to face him, and they'll also need to pull several strings with the sports’ governing bodies, to mandate another title shot.
If Oscar De La Hoya can’t do that, then we may as well continue regarding Gilberto Ramirez as being irrelevant, because that’s precisely what he currently is… and as far as I’m concerned, he always has been.

Dmitry Bivol-Gilberto Ramirez Title Showdown in Discussions
Golden Boy Promotions, which signed light heavyweight contender Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez last week, is already in talks with the team of world titlist Dmitry Bivol to match them later in the year, both camps told BS on Monday.
Golden Boy CEO Oscar De La Hoya said former super middleweight world titleholder Ramirez’s first fight with Golden Boy likely will be in April and then he hopes to make the fight with Bivol, envisioning it taking place in November or December.
“I’m hoping in April we can get him back in the ring,” De La Hoya said. “If feel that there are some good name fighters out there for him, some good competition. But eventually down the road we want to get him that big event, that big fight.
“Bivol – that’s a fight we love. We’ve been talking to Bivol and there’s been some progress. We feel very optimistic we can do something with him. That’s the type of fight the public deserves to watch, a fight with those two names. It would be an incredible fight. There’s a very good chance of it happening.”
A fight with Bivol is also one that Ramirez wants.
“Bivol is someone who has always been on the radar and I have full faith in (Golden Boy matchmaker) Robert Diaz to put together the best fights for me,” Ramirez said.
“Unification has always been the goal. I know I’m the best in the division and hope to make this happens for the history books in the near future.”
Vadim Kornilov, Bivol’s manager, confirmed to BS that indeed there have been discussions with Golden Boy about making the 175-pound world title fight.
“We’ve been talking a long time about Bivol fighting Ramirez and now that Ramirez has signed with Golden Boy, we’re on the same page. We want to do the fight,” Kornilov said. “It’s not hard to make things work.”
Kornilov noted that he has an excellent relationship with Golden Boy, which promotes one of the fighters he manages, super middleweight up-and-comer Bektemir “Bully” Melikuziev.
Kornilov said Bivol’s priority is to get a unification fight but none is currently available. Two-belt champion Artur Beterbiev is scheduled to defend his title on March 20 against Adam Deines and then likely headed to a three-belt unification fight with the winner of the postponed vacant title bout between Joe Smith Jr. and Maxim Vlasov.
“We’re interested in the unifications but we haven’t gotten any offers,” Kornilov said. “If a unification fight doesn’t happen, Zurdo is the biggest fight out there. It’s a good matchup. I think it’s a good competitive fight with Gilberto being a tough Mexican fighter. They will both try to win the fight. I kind of want to see how serous Gilberto is about the fight. Is he ready to face the best? That is the question. But we like the fight and so we are working on it.”
Bivol would also have a fight before the potential showdown with Ramirez. Kornilov said he is working with Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing, which has promoted Bivol’s last two fights even though they have no promotional deal, on a spring fight Bivol.
“Matchroom is working on a fight in the U.K. in April or May, a fight to get Bivol back in the ring and then hopefully we can make that fight with Ramirez. I think we can make things work as long as everybody wants it.”
De La Hoya said the Ramirez side definitely wants it, and it’s a fight that could be made with no broadcaster issues as Golden Boy and Matchroom Boxing both have deals with DAZN.
“We’re talking. The progress has been great. I have good feeling about this,” De La Hoya said. “I like Bivol. He’s a true fighter in the ring and he’s willing to fight anybody.”
De La Hoya was also pleased to add Ramirez to Golden Boy’s stable.
“He’s a top-tier add on to Golden Boy and we feel very excited about the future with him,” De La Hoya said. “I think he can give any light heavyweight a run for their money. His record speaks for itself.”
De La Hoya added that he believes Ramirez can make a run at surpassing the 50-0 record that Floyd Mayweather retired with in 2017.
“We feel that with the fights that are out there for him, with the competition that is out there for him we feel that we can make him a big star,” De La Hoya said. “Obviously, with the Golden Boy machine behind him, we feel we can make him a star.”
Ramirez said he is very comfortable with the direction his career will head in under Golden Boy’s guidance.
“Ultimately, Golden Boy understood the goals and agendas I set for myself and I felt the strong support from Oscar and his team,” Ramirez said. “It’s a multi-fight deal with potential for something longer pending this first experience. From all the conversations my team and I have had with Golden Boy, I felt comfortable with them and the future opportunities that will arise from our relationship.
“Oscar is a great guy and it’s been nothing but a pleasure dealing with him and his team. As my relationship with Golden Boy continues to grow, I’m sure we (De La Hoya) will become closer. He’s a champion and one of the greatest to ever lace up the gloves.”
Ramirez (41-0, 27 KOs), 29, a southpaw from Mexico, who had been with Top Rank for years before going out on his own when they parted ways, has only fought once since April 2019 on a card his own company, Zurdo Promotions, put on in December. Ramirez knocked out Alfonso Lopez in the 10th round. Ramirez owns wins over Arthur Abraham, from whom he claimed a super middleweight belt in 2016, Jesse Hart (twice) and Roamer Alexis Angulo.
The 30-year-old Bivol (17-0, 11 KOs), of Russia, has made six light heavyweight title defenses, counting wins over Smith, former champion Jean Pascal and Sullivan Barrera among them. But Bivol has not boxed since a unanimous decision rout of Lenin Castillo to retain the belt in October 2019.

Gilberto Ramirez vs. Dmitry Bivol is a very interesting fight.
In my mind, both guys have received a lot of hype and praise over the years, either from fight fans or the media, despite neither fighter actually achieving much inside the ring, despite "technically" winning "world titles".
It'll be good to see these guys tested for once, by engaging in truly competitive bouts (against opposition in their primes, rather than faded names or fringe contenders).

bivol dominating pascal , smith, and koing barrera was pretty good 175 work, smith and pascal both rose up to near top 5 after he beat them. mind you 'what's he done lately'
another career that lost momentum . i dont think either get much hype these days tbh, fans have not had them on the rader much

Well, golden boy does not have any serious LHW so Ramirez probably will stay irrelevant

Gilberto Ramirez Vows To Snap Mayweather's Record, Fight Canelo
The first super middleweight champion in Mexican boxing history, Gilberto Ramirez, wants to capture his second world title, he vows to surpass Floyd Mayweather's undefeated record (50-0, 27 KO's), and longs to secure a showdown with countryman Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez.
After capturing the WBO world title at 168 and becoming a major play at the weight, the 29-year-old Ramirez decided to pursue bigger things at light heavyweight in 2019.
"I want to be world champion again, have all the titles, unify, and in the long term I want to be a legend. Overcoming Mayweather's mark is the first record I want to have," Ramirez (41-0, 27 KO's) said in an interview with Jocelin Flores.
"I want to have better fights, to fight for another title, to become champion again, to unify. That's what I need."
With more than a decade of experience in the pro ranks, Ramirez was crowned the 168-pound champion of the World Boxing Organization (WBO) in 2016 after dominating Arthur Abraham. He then made five successful defenses before moving up to 175 pounds where he picked up wins over Thomas Karpency and Alfonso Lopez.
Ramirez recently signed a promotional agreement with Golden Boy Promotions.
"Boxing has given me great satisfaction and I want more. I am where I want to be and I will get (to reach my goals)," Ramirez mentioned.
And he hopes to eventually get his hands on Canelo.
"I think that opportunity is going to be given, that fight has to be given because the public is asking for that fight. We are two Mexicans, we are the ones who are right now in our best moments and people are asking for that fight, I think that in 2022 it can happen. I have more skills than him, I'm smart in the ring and I'm bigger than him," Ramirez said.
"People want to see that type of fight and this is what boxing lacks since it has lost a lot of credibility, I think it would give both of us a lot of good press to fight together."

overcoming 50-0 is his goal....maybe that explains why he aint fighting da big bois
