Off topic(ish) Sports Personality odds.

Joe Calzaghe is 11/1 to be BBC Sports Personality of the year for 2006.

I think that is fantastic odds, considering that the first three favourites are Steven Gerrard, Colin Montgomorie and Andy Murray.

KHAN and Calzaghe are at 11's - 4th and 5th favourite.

I really cannot see anyone from now till the end of the year winning anything, god even David Walliams is 26/1. Calzaghe has got to be a certain winner.

Nice spotting, Murray & Monte wont get it tho Monta came very close to winning US Open! neither will Khan (well he shouldn't) it's between Gerrard and Calzaghe I think. Joe at 11/1 is very good odds. Will get on this asap cheers!

Gerrard won't get it IMO..... Despite a great FA Cup final goal and doing well himself in the WC - he was involved in a dissapointing team performance. Although Michael Owen got it in 1998 (but that was another crap year for British Sport).

Mongomerie.... 9 Didn't win US Open, but won Honk Kong 2006
Zara Phillips.....10 WTF?!?

Hatton.............11 Surely not after Collazo
Calzaghe.........13.5 Likely after Lacy, recieved tons of press.
Murray............14 Didn't win Wimbledon, but won SAP open, beating Roddick and Hewitt. Possible.
Rooney............21 No chance

13.5 for Joe, getting a tenner on it right now! Whats the odds of him winning Welsh sports personality?

Hmm not used to betfair, but put a tenner on 13.5 and it says £4.25 is matched, £5.75 is unmatched. Should I cancel the £5.75, also do you know if I ask for 15 odds, do you think I will get them? cheers

I caught Calzaghe at 25 to 1 a few weeks ago (before wimbledon and the world cup.) Only laid £2 on though......

You can get Calzaghe at 14-1 at Coral and Skybet.........

Yeah wasn't that confident as Calzaghe is not a BBC sportsman.... that is the problem - I find it difficult to imagine the BBC voting for a sportsman who has not been on their channel for years (was it Joe - Delaney, the last fight?)

Nice try stujones. There is a reason why Joe Calzaghe is at those odds. No one outside of boxing has even heard of Joe Calzaghe. His fight with Jeff Lacy was empty. If he did fight at the weekend it would have been empty. Amir Khan won the Olympic silver medal and still lost to Andrew Murray that year. Ricky Hatton beat Tszyu made top story headlines back and front pages (Cazlaghe didn’t) and still didn’t come in the top 3. I bet Khan gets more votes than Calzaghe this year.

Can't speak for people in England, Scotland or Ireland, but that statement is BS in Wales.

Just checking where the money is at on betfair, most of it on Monty and Hatton. £2 has been laid against Monty winning at 1000/1...... So if Monty wins, and he's 9/1 second favourite, that poor bastard has to pay out £1000 just to win £2?

It's been apoor year,but I still can't see Clazaghe winning it.
He is not that popular in England really,and after all the over reaction to his win against Lacy,a few people are seeing that fight a bit differently now.
Maybe Lacy was'nt the greatest fighter in history after all...

Sadly, I don't see jc winning it simply due to boxing being generally in the doldrums in the public eye at the moment.

Then again, who else is there? Whilst doubtful, Murray may have an exceptional Flushing Meadows. And Monty also has the Open and the Ryder Cup to make a name for himself.

Cricket? The Pakistan test won't exactly be comparable to the ashes, but if someone can single'handedly win the series they may have a sniff.

Calzaghe won't anyway be helped by his "noteable event" being at the start of the year, with (probably) a relatively average opponent being his only other chance to grasp the public's attention before Dec.

If he managed to get a fight with Hopkins (who has said he is bored already) and won that then I think he'd be a good bet. Otherwise no chance.

Call me gullable but Warren has said he has superfight lined up for September. That coulld be a big impact on winner of sports personality surely, and I don't think Joe's odds will get better than 14/1.

Gerrards performance in Champions League may be at back of minds, if Monty does well in Ryder cup that will be fresh also as was Englands ashes win. Still don't understand why Zara Phillips is 10/1 must be a typo.

Murray is a shoe in for the young sports personality, get some money on that. But youngsters seldom win the full award.

I'm not convinced September will be such a superfight, Glen Johnson I expect which while a good win in boxing circles does not look as good on paper for the casual fan when you look at Johnson's record numerically.

Calzaghe won't win it. The last non-heavyweight boxer to win it was McGuigan, FFS. What exposure has Joe had? 2 in the morning. On ITV.

All it's going to take is one decent performance in the Ryder Cup, or the Pakistan series. At this point in time Kevin Pietersen is a better bet than Calzaghe. And if, say, Mongomerie wins the Open, then it's all over.

He has won it before. I think, even though he did nout, it might be Walcott for breaking Rooney's record. Or Arron Lennon maybe for his actual play in an England shirt.

But still, the last golfer to win was in 1989..Pieterson winning would be a joke. I thought Hatton deserved the prize last year, but no of course the guy who won the ashes all on his own got it

Can you tell I have no interest in cricket. I also think USA will beat us this time in Ryder so it's no foregone conclusion...only 5 months to wait...

Can anybody find odds for Owen Haargreaves. He's the only player who came out of the tournament with credit in the last game. Perhaps he is worth a pound or two.

I cannot find his odds on William Hill, so does that mean he has odds of over 50/1.
