Heavyweights: Gene Tunney vs Floyd Patterson

Post by Djanders44 »

Tunney rejuvenated to his prime, brought into modern times, fully aware of his entire career and experiences previously. And the same for Patterson. 12 rounds. Your thoughts? (For this, assume that Tunney agrees to fight Patterson.)

Tunney would outbox Patterson with moving, jabbing, scoring combinations. Maybe he would even KO Patterson, he had enough power for Floyd's chin.

I'm going to have to go with Floyd on this one. IMHO, Floyd by Split Decision. Floyd, when in or near his prime, was tough to beat for boxers. He wouldn't be intimidated by Tunney, and I think Floyd was faster. I do rate Tunney lower than most do.

Patterson had faster hand speed (though Tunney was fast) but Tunney was faster on his feet.
Tunney was much better defensively than Patterson, which would probably be the difference.

Here is a vote for Patterson. Losing to Liston was one thing. Liston was too big and strong for Floyd and Liston could fight.. Don't think that would be a problem for Patterson against Tunney.
