Pedroza beats Laporte by UD to retain his World Featherweight title, he def won more rounds but lost 3 points for fouling over the 15, mainly for low blows and use of elbows, could've even been DQ'd, excellent fight, high action, for first 10 rounds neither guy could string 2 rounds together, they just took shots at teeing off on each other, really digging in the punches upstairs and down, Laporte rocked Pedroza in the 3rd with a huge right hand, dipped his knees, it wasnt until the 11th Pedroza took over and pulled away, Laporte was gassed and couldnt keep up with Pedroza who kept firing out the punches, terrific ending to a terrific fight, great inside fighting from both men

Lupe Pintor vs Carlos Zarate

Pintor beats Zarate by close SD to become World Bantamweight champion, i thought Zarate done enough to retain his title, he outboxed Pintor for long spells of the fight, he used the ring along with his height and reach to jab and move, he put Pintor down in the 4th with a right cross/left jab, Pintor wasn't badly hurt but he wasnt effective even when coming forward, it was quite a cagey fight, Pintor had more success in the second half, he wobbled Zarate with a left hook in the 10th and stunned him again late in the fight, still I thought Zarate done enough to win but Pintor got the nod

Lupe Pintor vs Johnny Owen

Pintor KOs Owen in the 12th round to retain his World Bantamweight title, tragically Owen never regained consciousness and died in hospital 2 months later, what a monumental effort he put in though, for first 6 rounds both men just stood in centre of ring and went toe to toe, Pintor landed the better punches but still couldn't compete with Owen's volume, he must've been throwing over a 100 punches a round, things settled down a bit in the 7th and surprisingly it was the smaller Pintor who had better of things at range, he put Owen down in the 9th from a right hand

The tide was shifting but Owen kept battling it out, the heart was incredible as was his engine, in thr 12th though things came to an end when another right hand Owen down, again he got up but Pintor clubbed him with a series of left hooks then one final right hand KO 'd Owen and tragically he never recovered, sterling effort from Johnny Owen but just tragic, he was well in the fight at halfway mark but Pintor proved too strong

Johnny Owen is an inspiration. He died doing what he liked best. This is truly a tragedy. Johnny Owen was so dedicated to boxing he never even had a girlfriend. He looked like a 98 pound weakling. He was not more heavier than that in fact. He had heart stamina courage conditioning. I truly believe that he was simply overmatched with Pintor. Yes he had to more guts and courage for his own good. A truly similar to Kim. The family was classy when a statue of him was dedicated in 2002 and Lupe Pintor was the guest of honor.

Remember watching this as a kid. (I think it was aired a few days after it happened.) This was pretty sad.

Aaron Pryor vs Antonio Cervantes

Pryor KOs Cervantes in the 4th to become World Super Lightweight champ, he had to get off the canvas in the 1st after walking onto a counter right hand after battering Cervantes for 95% of the round, Pryor wasn't badly hurt and carried on in same vain in the 2nd, Cervantes having to rely on occasional cute counters after spending all his time trying to keep the relentless Pryor off him

The end came in the 4th when Pryor backed Cervantes in the corner and nailed him with a right hand which dropped him in the corner for the count, frantic performance from Pryor

Michael Spinks W15 Dwight Muhammad Qawi. This has to be Spinks greatest moment as light heavyweight champion. He defeated a very good tough game opponent. Spinks used great strategy and was the superior ring general. Spinks rose up from adversity only weeks earlier his common in law wife Sandra Massey was killed in a car accident and then the incident when he was arrested. Qawi also fought a great fight he could never solve or figure Spinks out. Spinks kept moving kept the jab going with combinations a masterful effort and performance.

Pintor got lucky but he proved himself a good champion while Zarate went into one of the longest sulks in boxing history.

Dwight Muhammad Qawi vs Matthew Saad Muhammad 1+2

Qawi stops Muhammad in the 10th to become World Light Heavyweight champion, amazing performance from Qawi, one of the great performances, he was in total control, Muhammad was flat and allowed Qawi to do as he pleased, Qawi was able to box the taller Muhammad from the outside, his jab was immense as was his right hand lead, on the inside he was flawless, clean accurate punches and he was always found the room to get the leverage, uppercuts, body shots helped break Muhammad down, Muhammad never held or ran but just stood there allowing Qawi to have his way

In the 10th Qawi opened Muhammad up and dropped him with a jab, more accumitive and exhaustion really, Muhammad dragged himself up but whem Qawi trapped him on the ropes teeing off, the ref and corner stopped it, Qawi brilliant

Qawi stops Muhammad in the 6th round of the rematch to retain his title, another one sided pasting for Muhammad, hurt and opened up several times, a barrage of lefts and rights from Qawi had Muhammad down in the 3rd, Muhammed bravely got up but again he never tried to hold or run and it allowed Qawi to unload bombs from both hands to head and body, you knew Muhammad wasnt lasting 15 rounds, sure enough another combination from Qawi in thr 6th had Muhammad reeling and the ref jumped in as Qawi was punishing him on the ropes

Roman Gonzalez v Juan Francisco Estrada

Ahead of the rematch this weekend I've just gone back and watched their first encounter and dear me, I'd forgotten how good this fight was, amazing.

The pace of the bout over the full 12 rounds is just staggering - Gonzalez was finding a home for the left hook to the body early and managed to walk Estrada back to the ropes to put together combinations on several occasions but every time he looked like completely taking over proceedings the Mexican came firing back with stinging hooks and straight right hands of his own. Estrada tagged Roman quite a lot early while on the move but the more telling, powerful punches seemed to come from the champion on the inside.

The thing that always stands out to me about Chocolatito is how fluid he is and the rhythm he has in the ring, always seems to be in position to punch accurately with either hand. Both men took a lot of good punches in this one but barely took a backwards step, especially in R12 which was truly incredible.

Very excited for Saturday now!

Michael Spinks vs Dwight Muhammad Qawi

Spinks beats Qawi by close 15 round decision to unify the World Light Heavyweight titles, good competitive scrap, fight of two halves really, Spinks started off sharp, shooting out the long jab, using his legs occasionally dropping the right hand, Qawi came forward aggressively as always bobbing and weaving coming over with big shots on the upright Spinks, Qawi scored a knockdown in the 8th after a right to the body sent Spinks down, Qawi was stood on his foot but it was called

After that Spinks looked fatigued and Qawi began to walk him down and fire in quick bursts of punches, Spinks was just potshotting with the jab, it was a war of attrition down the stretch and Qawi looked the better man, still Spinks early work ran him out the winner

35th anniversary of Hagler-Mugabi Hearns-Shuler and Gaby Canizales-Richard Sandoval. This was near tragedy for Sandoval. The good news is he recovered and survived. This was a great card. This is months before Leonard came public saying he wanted to fight Marvelous Marv and there was some talk of a Hagler-Hearns rematch.

Dwight Muhammad Qawi vs Leon Spinks

Qawi stops Spinks in the 6th to retain his World Cruiserweight title, a one sided beatdown for Spinks who spent the whole fight tucking up on the ropes taking punishment to head and body, not using his legs, jab to try stave Qawi off, Qawi was able to do as he pleased and he pulverised Spinks for the duration, nailing him with hard lefts and rights, it shouldve been stopped in about the 3rd when it was clear Spinks had nothing to offer and was shipping too many clean punches, Qawi was goading him dropping his hands inviting Spinks in but Spinks never had it in him, finally in the 6th after taking too many left hook/right hands on the ropes the ref stopped the slaughter

The rematch was a done deal without ray. Shuler was a good fighter, just ran into the biggest puncher ever. Shame he went so young.

Awful decision that Spinks-Burnett fight. Burnett got screwed over vs John Conteh as well.

Ike Quartey vs Vince Phillips

Quartey stops Phillips in the 3rd to retain his World Welterweight title, fun fight while it lasted Phillips took the fight to Quartey, was throwing over 100 punches a round, trying to get to work up close and attack the body, Quartey's counter punching and shot selection were quality though, the way he was able to pick accurate punches to hit Phillips clean oozed class

In the 3rd Quartey walked Phillips on to a right hand then another had him reeling around the ring while Quartey nailed him with clean shots before he finally fell through the ropes, he got up on shaky legs, it was allowed to continue but Quartey nailed him straight away with a big right and when another landed the ref jumped in with Phillips sagging
