Is the Top Rank boat sinking?

Post by Glass Joe »

Looks like Lopez is unhappy and wants to get more money elsewhere.

Then we got Crawford, where Bob Arum said it costs him money when he fights, also its unlikely that Crawford vs Spence will happen while Crawford is at Top Rank, going to be Mayweather - Pacquaio all over again.

Also what happens to Top Rank when Arum goes, he cant have much long left at Top Rank, 5 years max.

Fury is the main cash cow but i dont see too many fights left.

No doubt someone at Top Rank told IFL not to ask about the Lopez news :OhYes: :OhYes: :OhYes: :OhYes: :OhYes:

Yeah - I don’t think their boat is sinking but I bet the senior guys at Top Rank will be wanting to get Bob out of the way.

He doesn’t give a shit about what he says and that’s now going to damage the business. Openly slating both Teofimo and Crawford doesn’t help Top Rank and what’s been said re: telling Eddie not to bid on the Teofimo contract could likely be deemed a breach of contract.

The other senior guys at Top Rank are Bob's stepchildren and they are only there because he put them there. Bob is Top Rank.

Yeah - I’m aware. Doesn’t mean that someone like Todd Duboeuf won’t be pissed off when he sees some of these quotes from Bob. Do you not think some of things he’s doing is damaging his own company?

I love that Bob Arum doesn't give a toss about what he says, why should he at his age?

Just hope Teofimo knows what he's getting into. He's only what, 23? Seems like he could have a long prime and a high ceiling, he shouldn't be spending 3 years of that in court.

His Top Rank contact has 3 and a half years to run, even if there is a clear breach, we know what lawyers can be like.

Canelo got his house in order pretty swiftly, hoping for a similar outcome. As much as I like Bob Arum, I want to see the best fights.

Honestly after Fury vs Joshua, and riding out the rest of Fury's career Bob might as well just get out of the Boxing game, and enjoy the rest of his life. His legacy as a Hall of Fame promoter was secure long, long ago, and this is the last payday he'll ever need surely.

Once Bob is gone I doubt anyone else will be able to carry on with Top Rank the same way he has all these years.

A Liability? He's one of the greatest Boxing promoters of all time. His track record proves that.

It can happen, Mikey Garcia lost 2 or 3 of his prime years due to legal wranglings. I don’t really know what the situation is with Teo here but his dad seems like a hothead so I hope Teo has someone to turn to for sensible advice about any contractual dispute that arises

I acknowledge Bob as a legendary promoter... But he is damaging his business by alienating his top fighters, by trying to limit their paydays...
Bob isn't doing any good for the sport these days...

Boxing promoters must love the sport that much they just stay around, Don King and Bob Arum are 90 years old and our allegedly is 70 soon, I know if I had their sort of money I’d be well out of there at that age.

Their paydays need to be limited. Paying these guys 10's of Millions for every fight isn't sustainable, and if any promoter tries to maintain that Big Fights will become less and less common because they'll cease to be profitable, and therefore there'll be no point in doing them.

You have to pay guys what they're worth. Not overpay them just because people think it's a nice gesture.

Think Terrence Crawford wants $5 million per fight. It is what he was told that could be delivered to him if/when he kept winning fights and being successful. Clearly, the global pandemic will lower the amount of money available - but from Crawford's point of view there were promises made that are not being kept...

That is one thing. But I think it is quite another when Bob Arum tells other promoters NOT to make a purse bid because it may affect future business... That is entirely the wrong attitude to be taking, especially when you are only offering a $2.3 million financial package to run the event of someone like Teofimo Lopez.

I come from the train of thought that the fighters deserve every penny that they can get because they are the ones taking the risks for our entertainment.

They definitely do deserve every penny they can get, but if the Promoter ain't making any profit why would he bother? You have to consider that.

Definitely. I think there is plenty of money is the sport though, with the global interest of it.... There's enough money to go around... Especially for top, top fighters...

But if you wanna make an issue of it, we could settle it with a Stable War in Week 1

Fair enough. But do bear me in mind, if you wants a 1st pick vs 1st pick, 2nd vs 2nd, 3rd vs 3rd....
