Joe Frazier vs Earnie Shavers 1970s?

Post by f read »

Earnie hit like a mule is true but i would give the nod to Joe based on consistency. Joe was a slow starter and Earnie could land a murderous punch early but he lost to guys you would figure he would demolish i.e. Ron Stander Jerry Quarry and even Tex Cobb. Fraziers only loses were to two of the very best Muhammad Ali and George Foreman. Joe Frazier gets past the early rounds and outlasts Shavers that is my take.

Shavers possibly drops Joe early, but I think Joe gets up. Joe probably survives the early onslaught, and then batters him as the fight goes on. From about Round 4 or 5 it becomes all Joe, and he knocks out Shavers somewhere between the 8th and 10th.

Smokin' Joe would pulverize Shavers.

Smokin' Joe. Too much class for Earnie. And by a brutal 7th round knockout.

In 1976, Shavers wins. Any other time, Frazier blows him out.

IMHO: 1970-75 Frazier wins. In 1976, maybe. it would be tough for Joe after 1976.

Frazier with a steady body attack, but not without surviving a very scary moment...early on (pre Foreman I) the early rounds were when to try to get Frazier as evidence in the Bonavena I, Ramos and Foreman I matches show. Shavers would get a few hard shots and maybe even shake Frazier a bit but Frazier would overcome him in a sensational fight.

The later version of Frazier, I can see Shavers (who by the way hit his prime around 1975) beating him.

I think Frazier 1975 and before beats every version of Earnie, simply a different level, so much so that he could afford some decline and still win

after the thrilla in manilla it could be a different fight though
