Canelo/Yildirim Wasn’t a MANDATORY DEFENSE. So why Canelo?

The WBC don’t order voluntary title defences.

Agreed... But tell that to Sulaiman.Enlightened-One wrote: ↑06 Mar 2021, 15:27Yildrim was the mandatory challenger.

I dont see the problem. A stay busy tuneup fight using the old mandatory bs excuse. Its not like Canelo hasnt participated in big fights for ages.

And he intends to fight twice more this year with the opponents both certainly being of higher stock than Yildirim.H8Usernames wrote: ↑06 Mar 2021, 17:51 I dont see the problem. Yildirim being the Mandatory contender can really only be explained by corruption within the WBC though. He obviously didn't earn that title shot. Somebody bought it for him.

Pretty sure that there exists some law that forbids fighters being ranked without money exchanging hands under tables.

Avni Yildirim was the WBC’s mandatory challenger before Canelo faced Kovalev. In fact, the WBC had agreed to grant the Turkish fighter a second shot at the 168lbs title before Canelo fought Daniel Jacobs.H8Usernames wrote: ↑07 Mar 2021, 07:04Isnt that like the standard operating procedure?gilgamesh wrote: ↑06 Mar 2021, 18:03And he intends to fight twice more this year with the opponents both certainly being of higher stock than Yildirim.H8Usernames wrote: ↑06 Mar 2021, 17:51 I dont see the problem. It’s rather interesting to see people deciding to complain about certain long-term situations only when they directly impact one of the sport’s biggest names. Otherwise, they don’t even give those scenarios a second thought.
And to be honest, without intending to defend the utterly rancid WBC, since I find them to be a hideously vile organisation, but it’s far too easy to name fighters that have received title shots (from all the governing bodies) that were inferior (or at least on a par) with Yildrim.
He’s not the worst fighter to have ever laced gloves.

Re: Canelo/Yildirim Wasn’t a MANDATORY DEFENSE. So why Canelo?
I think it is a mixed bag...
When Kelly Brook was IBF World Champion at Welterweight, Errol Spence had earned the right to challenge him as Mandatory. That was definitely a tough, tough title defense...
Just off the top of my head if Carl Frampton wins this WBO World title at Super Feather against Jamel Herring (I think that he will) the victor will be required to defend against Shakur Stevenson later this year... I think young Stevenson beats both of them, he does looked a good'un.
But Mr Gil, I definitely do understand your bewilderment at some of the guys who become mandos... I remember some of Wladimir Klitchsko's defences - Alex Leapai (WBA mando) and I was absolutely disgusted that this mismatch was signed and sanctioned... That guy Leapai might be doing well over in the pacific region, but there was no way was he ready to fight a man like Wladimir... It was atrocious...
And I'm just trying to remember if Pianeta was a mandatory (IBF?) - I'm not sure on that one...

That’s the thing with EO where Canelo is concerned, nobody need necessarily have made any accusations against him, EO will coming riding in on his little pink My Little Pony to defend the honour of his love object anyway.H8Usernames wrote: ↑07 Mar 2021, 12:26Did I complain?Enlightened-One wrote: ↑07 Mar 2021, 07:24 It’s rather interesting to see people deciding to complain about certain long-term situations only when they directly impact one of the sport’s biggest names. For the record my comment that somebody buys mandatory position wasn't aimed specifically at the WBC. I don't think any of these title organizations have integrity. They're all bought and sold.Enlightened-One wrote: ↑07 Mar 2021, 07:24Avni Yildirim was the WBC’s mandatory challenger before Canelo faced Kovalev. You and Gilgamesh both claimed that corruption (i.e. money exchanging hands under the table) allowed Canelo to perform an easy mandatory title defence against a poor opponent.H8Usernames wrote: ↑07 Mar 2021, 12:26Did I complain?Enlightened-One wrote: ↑07 Mar 2021, 07:24 It’s rather interesting to see people deciding to complain about certain long-term situations only when they directly impact one of the sport’s biggest names. I was merely pointing out three rather obvious facts, which either directly address your comments or the general sentiments of the forum:
• Yildrim’s WBC mandatory challenger status had nothing to do with Canelo, regardless as to whether your corruption accusations were true or not.
• Yildrim was the mandatory challenger for a very long time, but nobody complained until he became Canelo’s opponent.
• Yildrim isn’t the worst fighter to have ever challenged for a world title.
I’m assuming you’ll agree with all those points, since you can’t honestly pretend otherwise, can you?

* The wbc would never have stripped Canelo or done anything else to try to force Canelo to make this fight.
* I never made any complaints.
* I never said anything about how good or bad I think Yildrim is as a fighter.
Bonus point * The only reason that this fight took place was because Canelo wanted it to take place.
I’m assuming you’ll agree with all those points, since you can’t honestly pretend otherwise, can you?
