Only a lad really. We used to call it 'the unthinking moment'. Many a fundamentally good lad has been caught out with a bit of ale inside them and wall of noise and provocation coming at them. The punishment is deserved but I'd give him a chance when he's done his time. Only one chance, though.

He was 20, and is a very well built young guy. Intimidating, even. God knows what he’s like around his pals but I couldn’t believe it. He never speaks! The drink again...

No of course not. My point was that it was not exactly unprovoked by the looks of it.

Half the trouble caused on nights out is down to pissed up slappers getting in people's faces.

Regardless, he shouldn't have hit her in the eye. A retalitory shove perhaps or the contents of his pint thrown in her mush would have been more appropriate
