Who had the best punches (straight right, left hook etc)

Post by shadowsfall »

Throughout boxing who had the best individual punches.

If we were handing out awards who would you give these to?

Jab:
Straight Right:
Left Hook:
Rear Uppercut:
Lead Uppercut:
Overhand Right/left:
Left to body:
Right to body:

I'll start.

Jab: Larry Holmes
Straight Right: Hearns
Left Hook: Trinidad
Rear Uppercut: Hmm...Tyson or Lennox Lewis
Lead Uppercut: Roy Jones jr.
Overhand Right/left: Tim Witherspoon
Left to body: Mikey Ward
Right to body: Eric Morales and Hopkins are the only ones that come to mind.

Mine was quickly thrown together and it would be interesting to see my mind changed.

Chavez and Jones did lots of things well. If we're talking about guys who really made a living with one tool, I might go with:

Jab: Ike Quartay
Straight Right: Roger Mayweather
Left Hook: David Tua

Because I was saying how Gomez had great every punch...and I say it showing Sal the utmost respect, to have that will in boxing you have to be very courageous.

But yeah, Sanchez also had great technique, an iron jaw, great reach, an immense condition, a superior training capacity, good power in both hands, he had everything..

He was hittable, Gomez actually lacked one punch power as prodigious as his record was. Sal just walked through him.

Harold Johnson had a great jab- it's difficult for me to rank the very best, however; so many great jabbers.

Always an interesting conversation, especially when it is filtered down to a single division.
I will go with Heavyweight.

Jab: Muhammad Ali (machine gun-like)
Straight Right: Rocky Marciano (that suzy Q)
Left Hook: Jack Dempsey
Right Hook: Vitali Klitchsko
Rear Uppercut: George Foreman
Lead Uppercut: Mike Tyson
Left to body: Joe Frazier
Right to body: Deontay Wilder

I had to put Wilder in there somewhere... Imagine him using his leverage and sinking one in to the body... Boom!!
Be a painful one...

Besides having a great right cross to the jaw, the great Thomas Hearns had a great left hook to the body.

Other great left hookers that threw it to the body:
Julio Cesar Chavez
Joe Frazier
Mike Tyson
Alexis Arguello
Ruben Olivares
Roberto Duran

Another one with a left hook to the body:

Mike McCallum of course. The Body Snatcher!
