Signed.
It's the very least they should do.
Out of the four kings, I had a lot of respect for Leonard and Duran, both boxing legends, but I loved Hearns and Hagler.

Did the City of Brockton ever build a statue for Marciano? Just asking because if they didn't I can't imagine they'd build one for Hagler. Not saying Hagler doesn't deserve one, but I would think Marciano would've been the City's most famous fighter. Hagler is obviously right behind him, and in a P4P sense is better than Marciano.
Re: Petition to the Mayor and City Council of Brockton to create a statue of Marvin Hagler
yes. the city does have a statue of rocky. and streets named after him as well as the high school stadium. so... in my opinion, marvin deserves to have a statue at the very least..gilgamesh wrote: ↑15 Mar 2021, 19:28 Did the City of Brockton ever build a statue for Marciano? Cool. Yeah if there's already a statue of Marciano, definitely give Hagler one as well.JIMBO3754 wrote: ↑16 Mar 2021, 10:55yes. the city does have a statue of rocky. and streets named after him as well as the high school stadium. so... in my opinion, marvin deserves to have a statue at the very least..gilgamesh wrote: ↑15 Mar 2021, 19:28 Did the City of Brockton ever build a statue for Marciano? Brockton To Name New Street Marvin Hagler Drive After Legendary Boxing Champ
Brockton has come up with a way to permanently honor the late boxing champion Marvelous Marvin Hagler.
The Brockton City Council voted unanimously Monday night to name a new street Marvin Hagler Drive. The road will be part of a new development downtown.
According to the Brockton Enterprise, the street will intersect with Petronelli Way, where Hagler’s gym was located when he was trained and managed by the Petronelli brothers.
Hagler died unexpectedly at his home in New Hampshire March 13. He was 66.
Hagler was the undisputed middleweight champion from 1980 to 1987. He was born in Newark, New Jersey, but moved to Brockton in the late 1960s.
He is a member of the International Boxing Hall of Fame and the World Boxing Hall of Fame.

It’s weird to see people celebrating greats posthumously.
Why can’t people appreciate legacies of greats whilst they’re actually alive?
Put it this way, how many people that demanded statues to celebrate Joe Frazier’s passing, actually contributed to his ongoing living costs when he was merely a brain damaged frail penniless elderly man living above a gym?

Yeah. This statue nonsense, I dont know about it. Does getting a statue or a street really like honor or enhance your legacy in any way?
Imagine if your city wanted to make a square with a statue of you. How would that feel? Would you want it?

Do you even have to ask? I want a gold statue 50 feet tall for the pigeons to gather on to discuss politics. And if I want one made of my great self think of what Mayweather would like to see? Or Ali? Or Apollo Creed, he loved himself. All boxers think they're legends.Imagine if your city wanted to make a square with a statue of you. How would that feel? Would you want it?
This proves my point, although it's not Apollo Creed.

I was going to say the same thing. Hagler does deserve such notice however so does Marciano. I have a friend who lives in Luzerne Pa. I go there a few times a year and they have a statue of Rocky Castellani. Rocky was a great contender but he was never a world champion. It is the least the town of Brockton can do.gilgamesh wrote: ↑15 Mar 2021, 19:28 Did the City of Brockton ever build a statue for Marciano? Ah but boxing was once a hugely important sport.
In the post Marciano era only Ali, Tyson and Pacquiao have been global celebrities.
Ok, if you want to be pedantic, Jake Paul too.
Nevertheless Marvin should get a statue because of what he stood for - hard work and a determination to overcome setbacks and win. Look at Hagler's career and you will see a fighter who like some of his more celebrated predecessors had to do it the hard way.
These are qualities that could act as an inspiration to many others in the future and are certainly worth remembering.
Nobody went out of their way to make things easy for the Marvin Hagler / Petronelli brothers team.

Brockton To Host Tribute To Marvin Hagler
Mayor Robert F. Sullivan announces today a major event to celebrate the life of professional boxing legend Marvelous Marvin Hagler on Sunday, May 23rd at 2 p.m. at Rocky Marciano Stadium in Brockton, the City of Champions.
May 23rd has been declared “Marvelous Marvin Hagler Day” in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts by Gov. Charles Baker and this special public memorial will feature several celebrity guests and speakers, including legendary boxing champion Bernard Hopkins, ESPN host Stephen A. Smith, Showtime Championship Boxing analyst Al Bernstein, WCVB Channel 5 sports anchor Mike Lynch, acclaimed boxing writer and historian Ron Borges and members of the Hagler family. There will also be a video tribute to the iconic champ presented by event sponsor Copeland Toyota.
Boxing promoter and Hagler family friend Peter Czymbor of Brockton will serve as Master of Ceremonies. More guests and celebrity speakers will be announced in the coming weeks.
“Marvelous Marvin Hagler has been an inspiration and a source of civic pride for Brockton for generations. He is one of the primary reasons why we are known as the ‘City of Champions,’” Mayor Sullivan said. “This public memorial will be a fitting tribute to one of our city’s favorite sons and one of boxing’s all-time greats.”
Hagler passed away March 13, 2021 at the age of 66. The public event will celebrate Hagler’s monumental impact on the sports world and the City of Brockton, which he called home for much of his life. Hagler was trained in Brockton by the Petronelli brothers and became one of the world’s most dominant professional athletes of the 1980’s, successfully defending his undisputed world middleweight titles 12 times in classic bouts against fellow boxing legends such as Thomas “Hitman” Hearns, Roberto Duran, and John “The Beast” Mugabi.
Hagler’s three round war against Thomas Hearns in 1985 is widely considered one of the greatest fights in the history of professional boxing. He starred in TV commercials, appeared on late night TV and, after his boxing career ended, he starred in action movies in Italy.
“Marvelous Marvin Hagler serves as a tremendous role model for the young people here in the City of Brockton,” said Todd Copeland, CEO of Copeland Toyota, which is the event’s lead sponsor. “He was never knocked down and he always kept charging ahead toward victory. Hagler is a symbol of what can be achieved through hard work and tireless determination. Copeland Toyota is honored to participate in such a special event for our city.”
Other event sponsors include Lyft, which is providing access to free and discounted rides to the event, and Bertucci’s, which is hosting a hospitality area for the Hagler family and VIP guests.
“Brockton has been home to Bertucci’s for a very long time and we are thrilled to be part of this day honoring boxing legend and Brockton native Marvelous Marvin Hagler,” said Robert Earl, Founder and CEO of Bertucci’s parent company Planet Hollywood. “We are happy to be part of such a great event here in the city of Brockton.”
Brendan Joyce, Community Strategist for Lyft in Massachusetts, said: “Lyft is proud to help people access transportation to this event honoring Hagler’s life, achievements and his many contributions to the City of Champions.”
The event will be open to the public, but seating may be limited depending on the latest COVID-19 guidelines. Gates for the event open at 1 p.m. at Marciano Stadium, located on the Brockton High School campus at 45 Breer St., Brockton. The program will start at 2 p.m.
More information will be released in the coming days.

Re: Petition to the Mayor and City Council of Brockton to create a statue of Marvin Hagler
Be a nice tribute if they did that for Marvin Hagler.
As I see it, there's so many hard core fans that thought so highly of Marvin Hagler it would be crazy not to do it.
He really was that good and among the most respected boxers I think I've ever seen.
Hagler was a fighter who didn't need much hype because he constantly delivered in the ring over and over again.
Much like the Douglas v Tyson bout that will always be remembered for the upset, Hagler v Hearns is one of those fights that have stood the test of time that never gets boring or watered down by critics and is still regarded as one of the best fights that ever took place.
They should do something for him 100%, he earned it and was a legit great boxer no doubt about it.

It gets a little watered down because I'd heard so much about it before I saw it that I was actually disappointed when I saw it (Hagler vs Hearns that is), but it's definitely a great fight. His career in general is exciting as hell though.Evander wrote: ↑20 May 2021, 21:40 Be a nice tribute if they did that for Marvin Hagler.

Well I had seen The Legendary Nights episode about the fight, and heard all the hype "Greatest round ever" all that stuff, and for me personally. It's not the Greatest round ever. It is a good fight, but after the 1st round it gets pretty one sided.Evander wrote: ↑20 May 2021, 22:56Disappointed in Hagler v Hearns that's a firstgilgamesh wrote: ↑20 May 2021, 22:00It gets a little watered down because I'd heard so much about it before I saw it that I was actually disappointed when I saw it (Hagler vs Hearns that is), but it's definitely a great fight. It's great don't get me wrong, but when people call it arguably the greatest fight ever. I think they're way overselling it.

Round 1 of Hearns v Hagler is definitely one of the greatest rounds ever due to the anticipation, stage, and actual action. Few MWs in the history of boxing could have walked through what Hagler did in that round.
