McCallum’s KO of Curry was the greatest left hook ever thrown in boxing. Bar none. In boxing terms, not so much the wider audience or whatever.
Hagler-Hearns R1 was the greatest three minutes we’ve ever seen in boxing.

Me too, but the set-up was masterful from McCallum and a fight he was losing, against the most talented and sharpest of fighters.

Re: The Marvelous One has died
I was in Vegas to watch a fight and was hanging round Caesars Palace when Hagler walked past dressed in a suit.Me and my mate went straight over to him hoping for an autograph,I asked him and he apologised and said he was working and was running late and couldn't stop, the fact I missed out on the autograph didn't matter as I had just briefly spoken to a legend and that was enough for me ![[icon_notworthy.gif]](./images/smilies/icon_notworthy.gif)

Re: The Marvelous One has died
Such shocking news, I can’t believe the marvellous one has gone.
When I first started closely following boxing, Alan Minter was the champion, and already we were hearing about this brooding menacing figure from Boston, who people said was the uncrowned champion...I remember thinking well Alan should see off this guy because he’s beaten Antuofermo twice, and Hagler could only draw with him; how wrong can you be.
I think Minter might actually have been pre-fight favourite ? well it took Martin around five minutes to show us all how wrong we were. And to think both champions died relatively young, just a few months apart from each other.
Hagler/Hearns surely the greatest first round in history, and while I think the most impressive I ever saw him was his superlative performance in the Sibson fight, the Hearns war was of course his defining fight and his defining legacy. The greatest middleweight champion of all time.
What a fighter, what a legend, what a man
Rest in peace champ

Better than Ray Robinson's left hook against Gene Fullmer?

Re: The Marvelous One has died
I met Marvin at a sportsmans dinner event seven years ago. He was very nice and a total gentleman shorter than I thought (no more than 5'8-5'9) but broader and in very good nick for his age, shaking his hand was like putting my hand in a vice. Even though he was a total gent there was something very different about him, unspeakably hard and seemingly indestructible. His fights with Tommy Hearns and John Mugabi in the mid 80s got me hooked onto boxing and he's my all time hero. Very grateful I got to meet him in person but I'm absolutely gutted that the great man has passed away. RIP champ

The whole five-round equation yeah - watch the two fights. Robinson’s came out of nowhere and was pure talent, unplanned. McCallum planned to blast body shots from the opening bell, and figured that after four rounds Don would be desperate to defend them - so he feinted the right to the body and came up with that most perfect of hooks.bennie wrote: ↑15 Mar 2021, 06:02coghaugen11 wrote: ↑14 Mar 2021, 23:03 McCallum’s KO of Curry was the greatest left hook ever thrown in boxing. Don’t get me wrong Robinson’s looks better on film as one shot, because Fullmer was coming at him so he could throw it shorter. Curry was moving away a little so MM had to throw it longish.

Re: The Marvelous One has died
he quite clearly set it up with consecutive right hooks to the bodycoghaugen11 wrote: ↑15 Mar 2021, 07:43 . Robinson’s came out of nowhere and was pure talent, unplanned
he threw 3 consecutive right hooks to the body and did a walk-away right off each of them
the 4th time, it wasn't the right hook to the body, it was a brief eye-feint in that direction and the left hook came over instead.
perfect setup, not at all unplanned.

He threw it while going backwards almost, that’s hard to plan.

He planned to knockout Gene Fullmer in round five with a left hook thrown while moving. Yep.

Re: The Marvelous One has died
if you can watch that video and not see what Robinson was doing with those THREE CONSECUTIVE RIGHT HANDS TO THE BODY, using them as decoys to set up the left hook, you don't know what the fck you're looking at.coghaugen11 wrote: ↑15 Mar 2021, 08:24 He planned to knockout Gene Fullmer in round five with a left hook thrown while moving. I’ve seen the fight enough times, not watching your video.

I'm still hoping it's not true, it has only come from one source, the Facebook account.

Re: The Marvelous One has died
Sugar Ray Robinson's words:
'i saw that when Fullmer liked to throw a right hook to the body, and when he did, he dropped his left hand and his jaw was open for my left hook...
but you've got to let the fish see the bait before it can bite...
i noticed that when i threw a right hand to the body, Gene would return fire with HIS right hand..
(3 right hooks to the body from Robinson)
(Robinson assuming Fullmer's perspective) ray's gonna throw that right hand but this time I'm gonna be ready for it...
(Robinson back in his own perspective) Gene's anticipating a right hand, so I'm gonna fake a right, and when he cocks his right hand hit him with a good left hook"
i saved you the time. so there we go, I said it was, well, exactly what the great Sugar Ray said it was.. a series of baits with the right hook to the body, followed by the left hook he sets up with those baits
shame you couldn't tell that from watching it, especially if you've seen it more than once. I worked it out the first time I saw the footage, didn't even need the great Sugar Ray to explain it to me, as you did. it's a shame for you.

Marvin's wife posted on his FB fan page that his death wasn't related to the covid vaccine today, she mentioned natural causes but wouldn't give a specific cause of death. RIP champ

Did his son say Hagler had chest pains and shortness of breath for four hours? Beggars belief if so as such symptoms are obviously a heart attack. Call the ambulance and in no time they can be doing delicate key hole surgery via the wrist unblocking those arteries while you're awake! I hope this wasn't an easily avoidable death.

Initially conflicting stories with Haglers son James saying his father was rushed to hospital with chest pains and was experiencing trouble breathing before dying about four hours later.Tuan_Jim wrote: ↑15 Mar 2021, 15:57 Did his son say Hagler had chest pains and shortness of breath for four hours? His wife who said he died at home has since rubbished claims about a reaction to the vaccine and said 'I was the only person close to him until the last minute, and I am the only person that know how things went, not even his family know all the details'.

Re: The Marvelous One has died
Whether or not Marvelous passed away due to taking the covid vaccine or not, I would suggest everyone do extensive research of their own before deciding to take this vaccine or not. Some say its good, many says its not good at all. Do your research, talk to your doctor about it, then come up with a wise decision for yourself. Remember, the vaccine industry has been protected from lawsuits against their products since 1986. They cannot be sued for illnesses or death related to their vaccines. And, they have been sued successfully by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. several times for not actually testing their vaccines properly ( double blind placebo tests ). If you want to start researching, look under Robert F. Kennedy Jr. And Del Bigtree to start.
