Which fighter lost the most fights due to cuts?

Post by Controversial »

I was just looking at Alan Minters record and out of his 9 losses, 7 were stopped due to cuts. On a few of these defeats it is noted Minter was ahead on the scorecards at the time.

Does Minter hold the record or someone else?

Seven times is crazy.

Wepner is the other obvious one. Not sure he was stopped as many times on cuts as Minter though.

Ron Stander?
Jerry Quarry?

I'm sure without looking that they both were stopped on cuts plenty.

He doesn’t match for numbers, but three of Jose Napoles’ seven losses were on cuts. He lost both of his welter titles that way and was probably lucky not to lose the first fight with Armando Muniz on cuts.

Quarry was only stopped 6 times in total (cut or no cut) so wouldn't be as many as Minter.
Stander was stopped 10 times in total, not sure how many were on cuts though?

Hard to imagine being stopped on cuts while ahead on the cards so much as Minter though.

Bobby Jackson (Cecil Romero) a lightweight boxer of main event caliber in Southern California during the 1940s, was stopped on cuts in his first eight stoppage losses.

The Hogue brothers of California in the 1940s, were both bleeders. Big Boy Hogue has at least five cut stoppages. Cuts also played a part in several of their other stoppages.

Earl Turner who was a big draw in Oakland during the 1940s also had at least five cuts stoppages, Turner also had a bad chin; though Turner had a lot of heart and talent as well.

Not as many. Anyway, he had 3 lost on cuts fights in a row in 70-71.

Frankie Monroe, a busy club fighter from Lakeview, Oregon who I've entered many bouts for, had six cuts stoppages, which account for all of his recorded stoppage losses.

From local Irish fighters,

I remember watching Jamie Conlan and more than a few times he came out of his fights all bloodied up...
I would also add Paul McCloskey to that... I remember his face after a couple of his fights....

It is, especially when cuts were the reason in his first 7 defeats, only his last two defeats were not cut related.

Surprisingly, Cooper wasn't stopped on cuts as many times as I would have thought. Of his 8 stoppages, only Ali (twice) and Peter Bates seemed to have stopped him on cuts. There was an earlier stoppage to one Ulber Bacilleri, but can't be sure if it was cuts or if he was being battered. It was early in his career. The other 4 were KOs to Patterson, Folley, Johannson and Bygraves.

Yep, I think he just marked up easily, he looked battered after Bugner defeat and may have won some fights with cuts so maybe seems he lost more that way.

His defeat to LC Morgan was also on cuts.
