Adam Lopez vs. Jason Sanchez in Play For February 13 Card

Featherweight prospect Adam Lopez will face former world title challenger Jason Sanchez on February 13, a source told BS over the weekend.

The 10-round bout will take place at the MGM Grand Conference Center in Las Vegas, Nevada and will air on an ESPN platform, whether opening the live ESPN telecast (10 p.m. ET/ 7 p.m. PT) or ESPN+. The Lopez-Sanchez fight will precede the main event bout between light heavyweight contenders Joe Smith and Maxim Vlasov, with the vacant WBO world title on the line, and the lightweight bout between former IBF lightweight titleholder Richard Commey and once-beaten Jackson Marinez.

Lopez (14-2, 6 knockouts), who resides in the Los Angeles suburb of Glendale, last fought on June 11, defeating Luis Coria by majority decision.

In his previous fight in November 2019, the 24-year-old took a major step-up in opposition, losing by knockout in round 7 to current junior lightweight contender Oscar Valdez after scoring a knockdown earlier in the fight. Lopez was originally scheduled to fight Coria that night, but faced Valdez on a day’s notice after Valdez’s original opponent, Andres Gutierrez, weighed 11 pounds above the contracted weight.

Lopez’s other notable fight was a majority-decision loss to Stephon Fulton, who will be challenging WBO junior featherweight titleholder Angelo Leo. He is currently trained by James ‘Buddy’ McGirt.

Sanchez (15-2, 8 KOs), who resides in Albuquerque, New Mexico, lost by unanimous decision to Puerto Rico’s Christopher Diaz in his last bout on June 23. The fight came almost eight months after Sanchez knocked out gatekeeper Adeilson Dos Santos of Brazil in round 4.

Back in June 2019, Sanchez challenged Valdez, who then held the WBO featherweight title, losing by unanimous decision.

The Lopez-Sanchez fight is an intriguing crossroads clash with the winner becoming a legitimate contender at 126 pounds.

Smith-Vlasov, Berchelt-Valdez Cards To Be Held At MGM Grand In Las Vegas

After exploring other Las Vegas venues, promoter Bob Arum has decided to bring his next two ESPN shows back to MGM Grand.

BS.com has been informed that Top Rank’s cards scheduled for February 13 and February 20 will be broadcast from MGM Grand Conference Center. ESPN has either televised or streamed all of Top Rank’s cards from that venue since Arum’s company brought boxing back to television in the United States on June 9.

Top Rank seriously considered taking the February 13 and February 20 cards to Park Theater at Park MGM, which is located across Las Vegas Boulevard from MGM Grand. Fans still won’t be permitted to attend either show due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The February 13 card will feature light heavyweights Joe Smith Jr. and Maxim Vlasov in the 12-round main event. Smith (26-3, 21 KOs), of Mastic, New York, and Vlasov (45-3, 26 KOs), of Samara, Russia, will fight for the vacant WBO 175-pound title.

In the co-feature February 13, Richard Commey (29-3, 26 KOs), a former IBF lightweight champ from Ghana, is set to meet Dominican contender Jackson Marinez (19-1, 7 KOs) in a 10-rounder.

A week later, the February 20 show will feature Mexican rivals Miguel Berchelt and Oscar Valdez in the main event. Berchelt (38-1, 34 KOs) will defend his WBC super featherweight title versus Valdez (28-0, 22 KOs) in what figures to be a fantastic fight.

In the co-feature February 20, 130-pound prospect Gabriel Flores Jr. (19-0, 6 KOs), of Stockton, California, and Puerto Rican veteran Jayson Velez (29-7-1, 21 KOs) will square off in a 10-rounder.

Top Rank won’t schedule shows for the month of March in the United States. Venues for the company’s shows in April and beyond will depend upon when COVID-19 restrictions will at least allow a limited number of fans to attend fights.

Press Release | Joe Smith Talks Training Camp

Joe Smith had a spectacular 2020, consecutively dominating two world rated light heavyweight challengers on ESPN in Jesse Hart and Eleider Alvarez, and was nominated as the BWAA 2020 Fighter of the Year.

Now the #1 world rated light heavyweight, Smith Jr. (Long Island, NY 26-3 21 KO's) is working hard again in his native Long Island hometown preparing for his WBO world championship title bout against Russian veteran Maxim Vlasov (Samara, Russia 45-3 26 KO's).

Incredibly, since Smith Jr.'s two impressive victories in 2020, not much has changed in terms of the current COVID world we are all faced with. Social distancing, masks and testing still reign supreme, especially in the worldwide attempts in the sports world to trudge on through the pandemic. How does an elite athlete work around these conditions? This "Common Man," who has become an elite beloved fighter, gets back to his roots.

"I just train because there is nothing else to do," said Smith. "I can't go to the movies, I can't go bowling, so while I sit at home, there are no distractions, that's for sure. As far as conditioning, I do a lot outside and at home."

In an attempt to keep the circle small, Smith Jr. and trainer Jerry Capobianco are lucky enough to have a key to a local Long Island boxing gym where they are able to put in work as Smith Jr.'s thudding punches echo across the otherwise empty gym.

"As far as sparring, my sparring partner and his coach come down and opens their gym for us" said Smith.

"It is one on one, and no one else is around." Most recently Smith has continued sharpening his skills training with heavyweight Adam "Baby Face" Kownacki, UFC's Randy Brown as well as Star Boxing stalemate, super welterweight Wendy Toussaint.

As for the fight, Smith Jr. knows the work that he is putting in now will pay dividends come fight night against Vlasov.

"Anybody is a dangerous opponent, but I am confident that I am preparing the right way for a tough fight. I know Vlasov is a busy fighter so I will come into this fight in great shape."

Promoted by Top Rank, in association with Joe DeGuardia's Star Boxing, the Smith-Vlasov World Championship fight will be televised live on ESPN and ESPN Deportes on February 13 at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT.

Press Release | Undercard

Featherweight action star Adam “BluNose” Lopez and Jason “El Alacrancito” Sanchez are ready for a phone booth battle. Lopez will defend his NABF belt in a 10-rounder against Sanchez Saturday, Feb. 13, on the undercard of the vacant WBO light heavyweight world title bout between Joe Smith Jr. and Maxim Vlasov at MGM Grand Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.

In a six-round heavyweight special attraction, 21-year-old knockout artist Jared “The Real Big Baby” Anderson will take on Kingsley Ibeh, who went 2-0-1 last year inside the MGM Grand Las Vegas Bubble.

Lopez-Sanchez and Anderson-Ibeh will stream live on ESPN+ at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT, preceding the ESPN telecast (10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT) featuring Smith-Vlasov and Richard Commey-Jackson Marinez.

Lopez (14-2, 6 KOs), from Glendale, Calif., has earned his reputation as the “Glendale Gatti” with a series of action-packed fights. Following his controversial TKO loss to Oscar Valdez in November 2019, Lopez returned last June with a majority decision over Louie Coria in one of the year’s best fights. Sanchez (15-2, 8 KOs) challenged Valdez for the WBO featherweight world title in June 2019 and dropped a competitive unanimous decision. He has split a pair of bouts since then, most recently falling short via 10-round decision to Christopher "Pitufo" Diaz last June.

“On February 13, we’re back on the big screen,” Lopez said. “Mark your calendars, call off work, do what you have to do. You don’t want to miss this one. This is the year ‘BluNose’ gets his strap. Stay tuned, ladies and gentlemen.”

Sanchez said, “l've never been more ready. I just came back from a loss, so I am more determined and hungrier than ever. I will not take another loss, and that is my biggest motivation."

Anderson (7-0, 7 KOs), from Toledo, Ohio, went 5-0 in 2020, including four Bubble knockouts. He most recently knocked out Luis Eduardo Pena in one round, the fifth first-round stoppage of his young career. Ibeh (5-1-1, 4 KOs), a former collegiate football player fighting out of Phoenix, became an instant ESPN favorite with his go-for-broke style. In his last two bouts, the 6’4, 275-pound Ibeh held unbeaten phenom Guido Vianello to a draw and bested the previously undefeated Patrick Mailata by majority decision.

In other matches streaming on ESPN+:

Former junior middleweight contender Carlos Adames (18-1, 14 KOs), from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, will make his long-awaited ring return in an eight-round middleweight fight against an opponent to be named. Adames last fought in November 2019 and lost a unanimous decision to Patrick Teixeira for the interim WBO junior middleweight world title.

Lightweight prospect Eric Puente (4-0), from San Diego, will fight fellow unbeaten Sergio Vega (2-0-1, 2 KOs) in a four-rounder. Puente, who is trained by Robert Garcia, won a pair of decisions last year after more than a year away from the ring.

A pair of highly talented former U.S. amateur stars will make their professional debuts in separate four-round bouts. Troy Isley, from Alexandria, Va., is scheduled to fight Bryant Costello (1-1, 1 KO) at middleweight, while Las Vegas-born bantamweight Floyd “Cashflow” Diaz will fight Fernando Macias (1-1). Diaz made headlines in 2010 as a six-year-old when his flashy mitt work routine was shown on an episode of HBO’s “24/7 Mayweather-Mosley.”

Jahi Tucker (2-0, 1 KO), the 18-year-old prodigy who turned pro last September, will face Eric Rodriguez (1-1, 1 KO) in a four-round welterweight tilt.

Vlasov: I Know Smith Is The Bigger Puncher, I Am The Better Boxer

You have to give Maxim Vlasov for knowing his place in possibly the biggest fight of his career.

The former cruiserweight title challenger from Samara, Russia understands his role as the boxer in his upcoming fight with heavy-handed contender Joe Smith Jr. The two collide on Feb. 13th, live on ESPN from MGM Grand Conference Center in Las Vegas, with the vacant WBO light heavyweight title at stake.

Vlasov enters his fourth straight fight at light heavyweight, all coming since an interim cruiserweight title fight loss to Poland’s Krzyszytof Glowacki (31-2, 19KOs) in Nov. 2018. A knockout win came of his first fight back at his old weight followed by a pair of decision wins heading into his forthcoming showdown with Smith (25-3, 21KOs), revered as one of the hardest punchers in the light heavyweight division.

“Joe Smith is very strong, he’s the much bigger puncher,” Vlasov admitted to Boxing Scene. “He’s a good fighter, he can punch very hard and is good at breaking his opponents down. He’s very physical.

“He is the bigger puncher; I am the better boxer. I know what I have to do in this fight—and I will win this fight.”

All three career defeats for Vlasov (45-3, 28KOs) have come in the United States, though not without his share of success on this side of the world. The 34-year old Russian contender is 10-3 overall in the states. His biggest wins to date have taken place in his home country, including stoppages over Rakhm Chakhkiev and Olanrewaju Durodola—fights where he dominated on the scorecards prior to closing the show—and a 12-round win over Isaac Chilemba in July 2019 to avenge his first career defeat more than eight years prior.

The common thread in all of those fights was Vlasov’s ability to soundly outbox his foes. The power is there when he needs it, though viewed as a failsafe in his title fight with Smith who has dropped or stopped seven of his last eight opponents. The lone fighter over that stretch to remain upright for the duration of their fight was unbeaten Dmitry Bivol, though whom Smith badly rocked at the end of the 10th round prior to losing a 12-round decision.

“I know he will try to make this a fight,” notes Vlasov. “I prefer to box. I know I can’t just stand in front of him and try to match his punching power. I know he’s physically stronger than me. I plan to let him know that I am the much better boxer than him.

“We will see what happens but I am confident this fight will show what I can do in the ring at this level.”

Annoying the main event is off but this is going to happen quite a bit still in the coming months.

Promoters need to make sure that their co-mains are quality for their he foreseeable just in case it needs to be elevated.

At least the remaining show is on allegedly so will see get to see some live boxing.

Smith-Vlasov WBO Light Heavyweight Title Fight To Be Rescheduled For April 10 On ESPN

Joe Smith Jr. and Maxim Vlasov won’t have to wait too much longer to fight for the vacant WBO light heavyweight title.

BS.com has learned that promoter Top Rank intends to reschedule the Smith-Vlasov fight for April 10 at a site to be determined. Smith and Vlasov were scheduled to fight February 13 at MGM Grand Conference Center in Las Vegas, but their 12-round, 175-pound title fight was postponed February 11, the day before they were supposed to weigh in, because Vlasov tested positive for COVID-19.

ESPN, which was set to televise Smith-Vlasov as a main event last month, still will air it April 10. MGM Grand Conference Center will not be the site for their rescheduled bout, but a deal hadn’t been finalized as of Tuesday morning for a new venue.

Smith, 31, is the WBO’s number one contender for its unclaimed light heavyweight title. Vlasov, 34, is ranked second by the WBO.

They’ll fight for a crown Canelo Alvarez vacated after the Mexican icon knocked out Russia’s Sergey Kovalev in the 11th round to win it in November 2019 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Smith (26-3, 21 KOs), of Mastic, New York, beat Colombia’s Eleider Alvarez (25-2, 13 KOs) by ninth-round technical knockout in a WBO elimination match August 22 at MGM Grand Conference Center to secure this title fight.

Vlasov (45-3, 26 KOs), of Samara, Russia, bypassed the WBO’s other eliminator and advanced to this championship bout with Smith.

He was supposed to fight fellow Russian Umar Salamov (25-1, 19 KOs), who is ranked fourth by the WBO, in another elimination match. Vlasov was moved directly into the Smith fight after his November 20 bout versus Salamov in Minsk, Belarus, was postponed because Salamov contracted COVID-19.

Smith-Vlasov will be the next main event ESPN will televise live on the network as part of its exclusive content partnership with Bob Arum’s Top Rank Inc.

The next two ESPN-Top Rank shows will be offered live on ESPN+, the network’s $6-per-month streaming service.

In an ESPN+ main event March 20, Russian knockout artist Artur Beterbiev (15-0, 15 KOs) will make a mandated defense of his IBF light heavyweight title against Germany’s Adam Deines (19-1-1, 10 KOs). On April 3, an ESPN+ stream will be headlined by Cincinnati’s Jamel Herring (22-2, 10 KOs) and Belfast’s Carl Frampton (28-2, 16 KOs) in a 12-round fight for Herring’s WBO junior lightweight title at Caesars Bluewaters Dubai in Dubai.

Joe Smith Jr. is a working class blue-collar "everyman" who if I recall correctly also works his days as a Construction Roofer. He is a real hard man, strong like a bull, and will take one to give one, also seems to have an iron chin. He has good enough speed and defense too that he is not an "easy mark". In terms of pure physicality, Smith Jr is probably best at 175. Interestingly when Canelo had ventured to 175, I believe Smith Jr would've been too physical and all wrong for him. Smith is a big, strong, rough as they come kinda dude. Smith Jr started boxing late and had he started earlier and built up an amateur background, he'd be quite a remarkable fighter. The only thing Smith Jr does lack is technical know-how.

Maxim Vlasov, I recall seeing fight years ago and he was pretty good. That said, that was like 10 years ago, he's a lot older now, 34. He is probably more technically skilled than Smith Jr. Vlasov has got to know he's going to be in for a physical fight here though. I believe it's a question if the technician (Vlasov) can deal with the toughman (Smith Jr). I'd lean slightly towards Smith Jr, but Vlasov is more experienced and may have a trick or two up his sleeve.

This is the type of Titlefight that may come down to who wants it more.

Three heavyweight fights in action on the card according to boxrec. Not bad comparing to every other undercard in boxing full of flyweights and bantamweights :-?
