Terence Crawford, says Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez avoids Black fighters

Post by Enlightened-One »

"One of America's best boxers, Terence Crawford, says Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez avoids Black fighters"

Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez avoids prominent Black fighters because they give him too many problems.
That's according to Terence Crawford, who accused Alvarez of shying away from Jermall Charlo.
Crawford has long been linked to a bout with Errol Spence Jr. but recently said he'll never fight him.

One of America's best fighters, Terence Crawford, said Saul "Canelo" Alvarez avoids Black fighters because they present too great a challenge for him in the boxing ring.

"When you look at Canelo's career, it's like he's shied away from the Black fighters," Crawford said in an interview with Sirius XM Boxing and DAZN.

"I think the Black fighters give him the most problems."

Insider regards Alvarez as the pound-for-pound No.1 boxer in the world today. The Mexican has drilled elite opponents from super welterweight, through middleweight, super middleweight, and even light heavyweight.

The 30-year-old lost to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2013 but has beaten many top tier opponents like Shane Mosley, Austin Trout, Miguel Cotto, Gennadiy Golovkin, Daniel Jacobs, and Sergey Kovalev. Mosley, Jacobs, and Trout are Black.

Alvarez is currently campaigning in the super middleweight division having beaten Callum Smith and Avni Yildirim in recent months, and will defend his WBA, WBC, and The Ring championship belts at 168-pounds on May 8 against the WBO titleholder Billy Joe Saunders.

Should he defeat Saunders, it is expected Alvarez will target the only remaining major belt holder at super middleweight, Caleb Plant, who is white.

For Crawford, Alvarez is avoiding two prominent Black American boxers.

"He's shied away from Jermall Charlo and [Demetrius] Andrade for a long time," said Crawford in the Sirius XM interview, as reported

Crawford is one of America's most-talented boxers and a three-weight champion in the sport.

He has long been linked with a welterweight match against fellow pound-for-pound star Errol Spence Jr. — a bout that would be one of the most lucrative boxing can produce — but recently said he has no interest fighting him.

"That fight's never gonna happen," Crawford told FightHubTV. "It's over with."

Canelo campaigned at 160lbs from March 2014 until May 2019 and (according to The RING annual ratings) the only black top-ten world-rated fighters the Mexican didn’t face competing during that timeframe were:

• 2014 - Peter Quillin, Hassan N'Dam & Jermain Taylor
• 2015 - Michel Soro
• 2016 - Chris Eubank Jr.
• 2017 – Jermall Charlo and Demetrius Andrade
• 2018 – Rob Brant

Instead, Canelo faced the following opponents:

• 2014 – Erislandy Lara and Alfredo Angulo
• 2015 – James Kirkland and Miguel Cotto
• 2016 – Amir Khan and Liam Smith
• 2017 – Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Gennadiy Golovkin
• 2018 - Gennadiy Golovkin and Rocky Fielding
• 2019 – Daniel Jacobs and Sergey Kovalev

Terence Crawford is labouring over the fact that Canelo didn’t face Jermall Charlo and Demetrius Andrade, but between 2017 and May 2019, the Mexican was usually facing higher-ranked (and/or bigger money) fighters, such as Gennadiy Golovkin and Daniel Jacobs.

It sounds like Terence Crawford is referring exclusively to African American’s when he uses the word “black“, because he surely must appreciate the cosmopolitan nature of the names included in Canelo’s resume.

For instance, how many truly “white“ guys has Canelo actually fought over the last decade? I can only think of Ryan Rhodes, Liam Smith, Rocky Fielding, Sergey Kovalev and Callum Smith (accounting for 23% of the 21 fights he's engaged in during that timeframe).

And if you review the current 168lbs rankings, the only top-ten world-rated “black” fighter Canelo hasn’t faced that “fits” Crawford’s mould is Anthony Dirrell.

Canelo now competes as a 168lb-er and is looking to unify the division. So there’s no reason for Jermall Charlo and Demetrius Andrade to appear on the Mexican’s radar.

You only need to spend a few seconds reviewing Canelo’s resume at 154lbs to realise he’s fought plenty of “black” fighters.

So I’m confused. I’m not entirely sure I understand the logic for Crawford’s accusation?

I’m inclined to agree with your assertion that many fighters are refraining from engaging in high-risk bouts that could scupper their chances of landing the lottery-winning type money that can be earned from facing Canelo.

That said, by the time Canelo enters the ring against Billy Joe Saunders during Cinco De Mayo weekend, the Mexican would have only engaged in one middleweight bout (against Daniel Jacobs) within a 32-month timeframe.

During the equivalent period, Demetrius Andrade would have fought the likes of Kautondokwa, Akavov, Sulecki, Keeler and Williams.

And Jermall Charlo doesn't fare much better during the same timeframe, considering he fought the likes of Centeno Jr., Korobov, Adams, Hogan and Derevyanchenko.

I’m not being funny, but people need to remember the simple fact that Andrade and Charlo are both world champions at middleweight, but they’re hardly setting the world on fire with type of opponents they’ve fought.

So Terence Crawford’s opinion about Canelo really confuses me, considering Andrade and Charlo both compete in a different weight class, coupled with their resume’s being very weak in comparison to the Mexican’s.

Crawford's right, and he should know after avoiding everyone himself for the best part of a decade.

Not sure why he's bringing race into it as this is boxing 2021 where almost everyone at the top tries to avoid everyone else on their way up the greasiest pole.

Especially in the case of that walking protected bio hazard named Saul Cameo Alvarez - the rightful 'successor' to that other PED hero, Floyd Mayweather Jr.

The entire sport is now devoid of credibility and mostly full of journeymen making a decent, if somewhat predictable living.

It must be a virtual nightmare for any ambitious (and especially young) fighters to reach the summit.

So instead we see the same faces year after year - and as long as we keep buying this crap, it's likely to remain this way.

Ultimately the paying fans still hold the power.

To paraphrase a recent Lou DiBella tweet taken from a different context - that shocking Estrada v Chocolatito scorecard.

"If we continue tolerating this kind of bullshit, we’ll never change the corrupt system that allows and causes it."

A professional needs to look closely at the state of Crawford's mind.

He sounds like he has some issues going on.

This is actually,in a certain way,Good for Boxing.
I'm not surprised that Terrance would say this type of stuff. I think deep down, he Really Wants to take on Canelo,at least,Eventually, in the not so distant future. Terrance is only doing what he's Got to Do.

He's taking those first Definitive steps towards getting a Mega Payday Setup,on his behalf. Who can Really Blame him though. He realizes he's probably only going to box for maybe a few more years, and nows the time to start stirring things up, for his behalf.

Daniel Jacobs
Shane Mosley
Erislandy Lara
Austin Trout
Floyd Mayweather Jr.

That's 5 pretty high profile Black opponents that immediately spring to mind.

Terence Crawford seems to have a weird way of trying to act like he's victimized or just point the finger elsewhere to try to hide from the fact that he seems completely unwilling to take on ANY meaningful opponent of any ethnicity.

If I was Canelo. Terence Crawford could bring his ass all the way up to 164 or higher if he wanted a fight with me. I wouldn't make any compromises to him. Crawford's not a star, and he needs Canelo. Canelo don't need him.
