Remembering what a great prospect Henry Wharton was
As an amateur Wharton knocked out Ray Close in just 90 seconds when Close was ranked second in the world behind Maske.

Some fighter was henry

Re: Remembering what a great prospect Henry Wharton was
Does anyone on the forum know Henry personally? It would be good to know how he's doing.
Re: Remembering what a great prospect Henry Wharton was
I lived In York for a while around 2010 and he was somewhere around there , I know he had a load of bother with a gang of gypsies who beat the shit out of him down a country lane .

Sounds quite nasty. Although trying to break up a gypsy fight might not have been the brightest choice.stevec@france wrote: ↑25 Mar 2021, 04:56 I lived In York for a while around 2010 and he was somewhere around there , I know he had a load of bother with a gang of gypsies who beat the shit out of him down a country lane .

Henry is a gypsy man himself so it wasn't just getting attacked out the blue by travelling people,, all knew each other,
Re: Remembering what a great prospect Henry Wharton was
Bumped into Henry a couple of years ago. He looks really healthy and is doing well with his amateurs. Saw him at a live amateur show too with one of his boxers winning.
I bumped into him on the street and recognised him straight away. I spoke to him and asked him about his fight with Eubank. Funny enough he said only my generation recognise him so not a great deal of people stop him in the streets.
Really nice bloke and great boxer in a period where there were so many world class middleweights.

I always remember him punching guys out of the ring coming up, treble left hooks to head and body etc
Re: Remembering what a great prospect Henry Wharton was
Mickey knows him really well. I was a fan just because he seemed like such an old school throw-back - very stoic, humble and tough, though, tough. Different eras, but always thought a fantasy Wharton vs Sibson fight could have been a cracker.

He runs a gym and has four pros and a thriving amateur section. Also puts on evenings there. His gym is big enough for his own shows, has a bar, etc and has held Yorkshire championships.
As for the trouble.... nobody beat the crap out of him. He got ran over.

Knocked Sven Ottke out in the last few seconds in the amateurs in Germany. The bell went and they brought Sven round and it was a draw.

He had quite an exciting fight with Vincenzo Nardiello. Wharton was floored and if it wasn’t for Nardiello’s faint heart, I think it should have been the Italian’s night.

It was quite intimidating that night. All the younger lads who were 14-15 when he broke through were now 19-20 and full of drink. Henry was very annoyed at getting dropped so just stuck it on him. He knocked Galvano clean out as well.polecateddy wrote: ↑25 Mar 2021, 09:37 He had quite an exciting fight with Vincenzo Nardiello. Didn’t know he had such great amateur results
Imagine HW with the current lottery funding set up, I suspect he would have got the some euro/world/Olympic medals.

He lived in York too, a couple of miles from the station, and had to get to Leeds every night. Couldn’t drive at that point. This is whilst being an international. 5-6 hours a night.

Mickey .
Struggling to find 1989 ABA final results
Henry won his semi final and I see Seymour Johnson beat Chris Okoh in the other semi.
I can find Seymour as the champion from that year so presumably beat Henry in the final ?
Seymour must have been some talent if he beat Okoh and Wharton , but never turned over ...
Any ideas ??

Re: Remembering what a great prospect Henry Wharton was
Actually just found this on an old link from The Herald ( Scotland )
Yorkshire's Henry Wharton was controversially disqualified. The
England international middle-weight was thrown out by referee Dave
McCann for hitting after the bell at the end of the first round and then
swearing at his opponent, Gloucester's Seymour Johnson, who was doubled
up in pain.
Johnson was ready to start the second round, however, when McCann
called Wharton over and told him he was being disqualified

Yes, I was there. And to say punch is a bit of a stretch. And Henry denies the swearing to this day. There was nearly a riot.knockout wrote: ↑25 Mar 2021, 11:08 Mickey .

Mickey , the rest of the article said
“ Instantly a group of his supporters gathered at ringside voicing their disgust and stewards had to move in to cool down the situation”
I obviously wasn’t there but sounds a bit over zealous by the ref.
Johnson was happy to continue so they should have took a point off HW or whatever the and let the fight continue.
A soft DQ is no good for either boxer

I was only young. Mickey Duff asked his uncle to calm them down. The ref even let the corner have their minute after the first before calling Henry over and throwing him out. Massive over reaction by the red. It wasn’t even a tap.knockout wrote: ↑25 Mar 2021, 11:26 Mickey , the rest of the article said

Did you? He has hundreds. I know what happened. He never got touched after being run over. An ex pro close friend of his got attacked with machetes. Don’t listen to ‘cousins’.stevec@france wrote: ↑25 Mar 2021, 12:40He got ran over and then battered by travellers not far from York . I’m the godfather to his brothers son and a very close friend of them all.
Ps the real cousins don’t work.
