I don’t think Andy Ruiz Jr. is actually trying to get “thin”.
I suspect his main objective is to optimise his fitness levels and athleticism, as well as improving his general body composition.
So I suspect he’s only trying to “train” the excess weight off, to eventually weigh in the region of 250lbs, without actually having a fixed target weight.
If he tried to weigh much lighter than that, then he’d lose a lot of muscle, which would be counterproductive.

My bench is utter garbage. I compensated for my chest weakness with my deadlifts and squats.
That said, I'm probably weaker than a kitten right now, because I haven't had much opportunity to properly lift heavy weights during the last twelve months.

its not a lot of muscle mass per say, boxers dont rely on mass muscle, as do guys that lift weights, so athletes that do cardio, will lose fat, but not muscle, I guess we can go on all day about this, boxers who use weights get an advantage, because it builds strengh, but not over useage of weight, i spent a lot of time with kerry over 25 years, and see what results are, i have filmed pro bodybuilders dvds, and see how they train,

And if we were discussing a fighter only trying to lose 10lbs to 15lbs, that loses the excess weight in the correct manner (i.e. nutrients, training, rate, recovery), then they would very likely experience only a trivial amount of loss in muscle mass and strength.
So we generally agree.
But we’re talking about the morbidly obese Andy Ruiz Jr. He only recently resumed training. And he probably needs to lose 50lbs to 60lbs to be at a relatively healthy weight.
However, for him, in comparison to the AJ fight, he could easily get away with losing only 35lbs to remain competitive against today’s top-ten world-rated big men.
Therefore, Andy Ruiz Jr. will definitely lose some a fair bit of muscle if his training team focuses on weight loss rather than fitness, because he’ll inevitably lose muscle mass/strength which will have an adverse effect on his performance levels.
You’ve got trainers, like Freddie Roach, that have first-hand experience of seeing Andy losing weight too quickly, with them saying he actually performs better when he’s fat.
And that’s kind of the point I’m eluding to. The sports science, coupled with feedback from trainers, explains the reason for my opinion.

He’s had a lot of time to lose the weight, but he hasn’t taken it.
He only recently resumed training and is due to face Chris Arreola in a little over a week’s time.
