A bit fantastic wasnt it..
The murder theory seems to hang upon the position of the gun once fired, but if the body was taken away before the police arrived then how could anybody be sure, particularly as it was in darkness?
The ending was a bit Sopranos and theatrical too,its always looked like a fairly straightforward case of suicide to me.

I've never heard of anyone who committed suicide by shooting himself (or herself) through the eye. It doesn't add up.

He had only £300 to his name at the time he died.

He was trying to sell his club for a ages, but couldn't find a buyer.

I’m going to watch this as I don’t know too much about him but in regards to committing suicide if you are desperate enough to kill yourself you will not be thinking logically and so will probably do anything.

Was this true though ? I read that book that said he was gay and a murderer. Seemed like bollox to me.

My grandfather vaguely knew Freddie Mills and told me this donkey's years ago when I was a kid. He wasn't making it up. It was pretty much an open secret that Mills was gay (or bisexual) anyway.

The murder thing was the notion that Mills was in fact 'Jack the Stripper' (who killed prostitutes in West London). I have no idea whether there's any truth in the claim.
There is truth in the fact that he was gay.

There is no truth whatsoever in the "Jack the Stripper" nonsense. Total boll*cks.

It’s been proved beyond reasonable doubt that “Jack the Stripper” was a Welsh serial killer called Harold Jones.

There's no way Freddie Mills was 'Jack the Stripper'. It was a lie from a gangster that probably had a grudge against Mills. The investigating officers said he was never a suspect. The victims were all or mostly prostitutes, some were involved in pornography. The murderer was likely a Green River killer type, meaning a client or someone connected to the business. A gay man wouldn't be interested..

I think it's unlikely. Jones was exonerated for another murder he was accused of, using DNA evidence. The stuff in the BBC documentary was circumstantial, Jones was living in London near the area where the killings were taking place and the victims were female. Jones killed two little girls, not grown prostitutes, when he was 15. Teenage 'thrill kill' type murders. The 'stripper' murders happened over 40 years later when Jones was pushing 60. My guess is the prostitutes would have kicked the old bastard's ass if he tried to harm them. Jones had sort of rehabilitated himself, married and had a kid. Anything's possible but how many murderers were living in London in the 1960s besides Jones?

I'm not usually a fan of documentaries 50 years after the fact purporting to solve these type of cold cases. Usually their evidence is gossip and circumstantial, their star witness usually with a grudge or a story to tell. Or 'new evidence' that the cops already went over years earlier. The DNA evidence has been a game changer in many of these crimes, it almost seems unfair how they can nail these old guys after they 'got away with it'. Almost..

I've always been fascinated in Freddie Mills. He seemed such a good all round guy. When he talked in that documentary he did sound quite effeminate although perhaps that was due to the influence of his acting? Arguably one of the bravest fighters ever.

Is this when the bloke reckoned Meyer Lansky killed Mills?

That would be completely untrue. I did a lot of reading on Lansky years ago. Not his style.
I recommend the book Little Man by Robert Lacey to get an understanding on Lansky.

Pisses me off how many nutters have used crazy accusations against Mills for a few quid and notoriety.
The Jack the Stripper nonsense was an absolute disgrace.

Yes it is and, like you, I don't believe a word of it. The last half hour spoilt this otherwise excellent documentary. The stuff about Huntman and Lansky was tripe.

I also agree with you about that ludicrous book written by an ex-journalist claiming that Mills was a serial killer. Cheap trash that book was, of the worst kind.

Finally got around to watching this, interesting, what’s the general consensus on here, murdered?

I wouldn’t be surprised if he had some form of brain damage though that led to depression, 101 pro fights and god knows how many scraps in the booths, he took more than his fair share of head shots.
