Press Release

Jamel “Semper Fi” Herring’s WBO junior lightweight world title defense against Belfast’s former two-weight world champion Carl “The Jackal” Frampton — Saturday, April 3 from Caesars Bluewaters Dubai — will stream live and exclusively in the United States on ESPN+.

Herring-Frampton will headline a two-bout broadcast beginning at 3 p.m. ET/12 p.m. PT. In the 10-round junior welterweight co-feature, undefeated Kazakh star Zhankosh Turarov will fight Belfast native Tyrone McKenna.

Undercard action will stream live on ESPN+ at 1 p.m. ET/10 a.m. PT.

“This is a fight that’s been in the works for a very long time, and I expect both Jamel and Carl to be at their best,” said Top Rank chairman Bob Arum. “It’s an even matchup, and I am pleased that fans in the United States can watch it live on ESPN+."

Herring (22-2, 10 KOs) has made two defenses of the title he won from Masayuki Ito in May 2019, most recently defeating Puerto Rican challenger Jonathan Oquendo via disqualification last September at the MGM Grand Las Vegas Bubble. He was originally scheduled to face Frampton last summer in Belfast, but COVID-19 intervened.

Frampton (28-2, 16 KOs), who won world titles at junior featherweight and featherweight, hopes to make history as the island of Ireland’s first three-division world champion. He has won two straight bouts since losing a unanimous decision to Josh Warrington in December 2018 for the IBF featherweight world title. In his lone ring appearance of 2020, Frampton knocked out late replacement foe Darren Traynor in the seventh round.

Undercard action streaming on ESPN+ includes:

Former four-weight world champion Donnie Nietes (42-1-5, 23 KOs) returns to action after more than two years away from the ring and will fight an opponent to be named in a 10-rounder at junior bantamweight. Nietes, from the Philippines, is one of four Asian fighters in boxing history to capture world titles in four weight classes.

Keyshawn Davis (1-0, 1 KOs), a former U.S. amateur standout who captured a silver medal at the 2019 World Championships, will take on an opponent to be named in a six-round lightweight bout.

Carl is inferior in size and kind of jumped the shark but he can still beat Herring.

Press Release | Donnie Nietes faces Pablo Carrillo on Frampton vs Herring card in Dubai

Donnie Nietes has had his opponent confirmed for the “Legacy” event on April 3 at Caesars Palace Bluewaters Dubai, UAE. Former four-weight world champion will take on Pablo Carrillo for the vacant WBO International super-flyweight title on the Frampton vs Herring undercard.

It sees Filipino superstar Nietes (42-1-5, 23 KOs) make his highly-anticipated return to the ring, as he prepares to compete for the first time since December 2018.

Nietes has won world titles at super-flyweight, flyweight, light-flyweight and minimumweight during his incredible career, and has a serious challenge in front of him against Carrillo (25-7-1, 16 KOs), who is ranked #8 in the world with the WBA.

Carrillo has operated at the highest level in boxing for a number of years, having previously shared the ring with a number of world champions, including Kazuto Ioka, Luis Concepcion and Francisco Rodriguez Jr.

The event is headlined by Jamel Herring defending his WBO super-featherweight title against Carl Frampton. Elsewhere on the card, Zhankosh Turarov and Tyrone McKenna meet for the WBO Intercontinental super-lightweight title, Kazakhstan sensation Tursynbay Kulakhmet defends his WBC International super-welterweight title against 20-0 opponent Heber Rondon, and American prodigy Keyshawn Davis returns.

TV details revealed for Jamel Herring vs Carl Frampton

THE broadcast details have been confirmed for Carl Frampton's bid to become a three-weight world champion when he tangles with Jamel Herring for the WBO super-featherweight title in Dubai next Saturday, April 3.

There had been some concerns as to where local fight fans could tune into the bout as nothing had been announced on this side of the Atlantic.

During last Friday's British lightweight title fight between Maxi Hughes and Paul Hyland Jnr, broadcast on YouTube, it was revealed that IFL TV would beam all the action on Easter Saturday through their YouTube channel and this was officially confirmed this afternoon (Thursday). ESPN+ will carry the broadcast to boxing fans in the United States.

The undercard action will begin at 7pm Irish time, with Belfast's Tyrone McKenna taking on explosive Kazakh Zhankosh Turarov for the WBO Inter-Continental light-welterweight title expected around 9pm.

This will be followed by Frampton's quest to secure his legacy by becoming the first rich fighter to claim world titles in three different weight divisions when he challenges New York's Herring in a fight that has been delayed on a number of occasions.

The pair were initially due to meet last summer in Belfast, but the Covid-19 pandemic saw the fight put on the back-burner.

It was rescheduled for February 27 of this year, but a hand injury sustained by 'The Jackal' in training prompted a further delay with the eagerly-anticipated dust-up moved from London to Dubai.

Initially, BT Sport were to broadcast the February date, but had made no indication they were to televise the rescheduled card next week, leaving many fans anxious as to how they could tune-in to support the Belfast favourite.

Those fears have been allayed and whilst the fight is not on a mainstream TV platform, the good news is that all of the action will be available to view with no subscription required.

10 Things you didn’t know about Jamel Herring

Who is Jamel Herring?

Facts you need to know about ‘Semper Fi’ below

Jamel Herring is the man who stands in Carl Frampton’s way of securing a legacy in boxing history on April 3 in Dubai, as the legendary Irishman attempts to win a world title at a third weight category at the expense of the reigning WBO World super-featherweight champion.

But who is the defending champion? BBN have found out some little-known facts about the American hero:

The Beginning

Jamel Herring was born on October 30, 1985, in Rockville Centre, New York, to Michael Mitchell and Jeanine Herring. His mother remarried to Harry Elliby and he was raised in Gordon Heights, Coram. He attended Longwood High School, with another successful pro boxer, Cletus Seldin.

He began boxing in 2001, aged 15/16, with trainer Austin Hendrickson.

The Father

Jamel suffered the worst tragedy imaginable when his daughter, Ariyanah, passed away from sudden death infant syndrome (SIDS) in 2009, aged just two months. The condition is extremely rare, recorded at a rate of 0.05% according to US government figures.

Everything Jamel does in his career and life is to keep the memory of his late daughter alive. He explained, “Every time I feel I’m starting down the wrong path, I think of her. What would she think if I was to do this? It keeps me on the right track and I have more joy today than I did 10 years back when the tragedy happened.”

Herring has a large healthy family consisting of a Kamren (2004); Stephen (2007); Jamel Jr. (2010); Jazmyne (2013); Justice (2017).

The Husband

Jamel married childhood sweetheart, Jennifer Dickerson, on September 26, 2015.

The Marine

In 2003, Herring enlisted into the US Marine Corps to serve his country in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. He served in two tours of Iraq. He was inspired by the history of Marines that went on to become world champion boxers and looked up to ex-Marines Leon Spinks and Ken Norton.

The memories of the Iraq war left the retired marine with depression and PTSD, especially after losing his best friend, Stephen Brown. They met when Jamel was only six and lived across the street from each other, shortly after his mother regained custody of him. Stephen was a year older and joined the Marines the year before Herring did, then sadly passed away from lung cancer on December 12, 2004. It was Stephen who introduced Jamel to boxing and became the biggest influence in his life, which is why the grieving friend named his son Stephen, born in 2007, in tribute to his best friend.

The Olympian

Jamel led the US team in the London 2012 Olympics and became the first serving Marine to qualify for the US boxing team since 1992.

He compiled a record of 81-15 as an amateur, mostly while serving a full nine years in the Marines. He won a gold medal in the US National Amateur Championships in 2012, he also won the US Armed Forces Champions the same year, defending the title successfully that he won in 2011.

The Boxer

Jamel says that boxing, widely regarded as the hardest sport in the world, is actually quite therapeutic for him after all of the heartbreak he has had to endure during his life.

He said, “I’ve suffered loss in life. I lost a daughter, I lost friends in the military. I always look back and don’t take things for granted. Boxing, for me, has been therapeutic.”

The Long Islander

Jamel is one of only three world champions from Long Island, which includes Buddy McGirt and Chris Algieri.

The Sparring Partner

Herring has had the best possible preparation for this world title defence by sparring with P4P great, Terence Crawford, in Nebraska.

The Champion

Herring became a world champion when he defeated Masayuki Ito in May 2019, and has defended the WBO belt twice to Lamont Roach in his first defence in November 2019, then to Jonathan Oquendo in September 2020.

He refers to himself as a ‘regular human being’ with a new platform available to him as a world champion and a responsibility to be open and share his experiences to help others.

He said, “I look at it as the responsibility of a true champion to share my story. Potentially, I can help save someone’s life and put them on the right path.

The Nickname

The nickname ‘Semper Fi’ is a Latin phrase (Semper fidelis in full) which simply means ‘Always loyal’ or ‘Always faithful’. It is the motto of the US Marine Corps, which is thought to have originated from ancient Rome.

Frampton is more experienced, Herring is a late bloomer.
The numbers say Frampton but Herring's height advantage as well as some solid skills make this one closer.
Could be a "Styles Make Fights" type of contest.
Not sure what the pace will be like as they're both mid 30 Super Featherweights and both boxing far away from home in unfamiliar surroundings, could produce anything.

Herring is one of the weakest champs in boxing, Frampton the better fighter but question of this one is if 130 is too far for Carly.

Press Release | Everlast To Sponsor Frampton vs Herring

D4G Promotions is thrilled to announce that Everlast will be the title sponsor for the prestigious #Legacy event in Dubai this weekend – as Jamel Herring defends his WBO super-featherweight title against Carl Frampton.

The highly-anticipated, first ever world title fight to be held in the Middle East, takes place at Caesars Bluewaters Dubai on April 3, and will now feature one of the biggest sports brands in the world.

Everlast has been synonymous with boxing for generations, worn by all of the greats throughout the years, including the likes of Muhammad Ali, Marvin Hagler, Sugar Ray Leonard, Roberto Duran, Joe Frazier and many more.

The brand has established itself as the boxing industry’s market leader, providing a wide range of elite products that includes gloves, sports equipment, clothing and footwear.

Having announced a historic pledge to British boxing last week – a commitment to sign 52 new fighters this year – today’s sponsorship news is yet another bold statement of Everlast’s dedication to boxing.

Everlast will now be involved in April’s groundbreaking event, as Frampton looks to become the island of Ireland’s first ever three-weight world champion when he challenges American hero Herring.

Elsewhere on the card, Zhankosh Turarov and Tyrone McKenna meet for the WBO Intercontinental super-lightweight title, boxing legend and former four-weight world champion Donnie Nietes faces Pablo Carrillo for the vacant WBO International super-flyweight title, Kazakhstan sensation Tursynbay Kulakhmet defends his WBC International super-welterweight title against 20-0 opponent Heber Rondon, and American prodigy Keyshawn Davis returns.

Chris Zoller, Vice President, Marketing & Product Development at Everlast, commented: “We’re delighted to be involved in such an iconic event, the first world title fight in the middle East. It really is an incredible card for fight fans and hopefully a sign of things to come in the region.

We’ve been working with Carl Frampton for some time now and what better way to get behind him, and the sport of boxing, that to get involved in his biggest fight to date. Ahmed Seddiqi and D4G Promotions are really paving the way for boxing in the Middle East and we’re looking forward to working with him and his team to show the world what Dubai has to offer.”

Ahmed Seddiqi of D4G Promotions said: “We are honoured that a brand as famous as Everlast are showing their support for our massive Legacy event on April 3.

“Everlast is recognisable worldwide as one of the best brands in all of sports, and this is a very exciting step for D4G Promotions.

“It is important in this sport that the boxers receive as much backing as possible, and joining forces with Everlast helps to show everybody just how prestigious this event is going to be, so we can’t wait.”

That's how the weigh in played out :TU:

Frampton was way more thick set in the body.
Herring looked weight drained for his height.
Frampton should stop him, body attack from the off stops him inside 9.
