Should GGG still be considered a top-ten pound-for-pounder?

Post by Enlightened-One »

Has GGG achieved enough within the sport of boxing within the last 3½ years (since 2018) to be considered a top-ten pound-for-pounder?

If we review Gennadiy's resume since 2018:

• The Vanes Martirosyan, Steve Rolls and Kamil Szeremeta fights were terribly horrendous mismatches. That's not my opinion, but the general perception of the forum.

• GGG was unofficially beaten by Sergiy Derevyanchenko. Again, this was the commonly held perception of the media and the forum.

• And GGG was defeated by Canelo. For sure, this was a very close fight, but most media sources claimed the Mexican just about deserved the nod.

• GGG has also been removed from ESPN’s and The RING’s top-ten pound-for-pound ratings?

Thoughts? :-?

If he’s already been removed from Ring Mag and ESPN’s top 10, then clearly he shouldn’t. Pointless thread. You ended it yourself.

He probably lingering outside the top 10, a good win maybe gets him back in. Possibly.

Only TBRB have him in top 10. #8..

It's criminal that he isn't. He arguably beat Canelo (p4p no.1) twice. Although he appears to have gradually worsened in terms of ability and has recently played it close, until he loses its hard to argue that he should be anywhere but amongst the best.

I still consider him Top 10 without a doubt in my mind. I'm sure he's coming to the end of the line, but he's still a winner, and he still beat Canelo twice and was robbed twice. He's toward the back end of the P4P at this point, but he's still one of the best going. For at least a little while longer.

Some guys can defy age for quite a while. I doubt GGG will defy it much longer, but he's not shot yet.

He looked in excellent condition against Kamil Szeremeta however Father Time is undefeated.

He still possesses a granite chin and punches like a mule but he's slowing down noticeably.

I'm up for a farewell fight in the Karagandy-Arena in his hometown of Karaganda.

That would be appropriate. Let somebody actually beat him first though before you put him out to pasture.

His timing and feet are out, and he's taking a lot more shots. I don't doubt the formidable power is still there, or thereabouts, but it's not much use if he can't land it.
His timing was off for the first Canelo fight, and has only deteriorated since.

Like I say. Let's see him lose decisively at least once before putting him out to pasture.

Jesus Christ with fans like you guys back in the day Henry Armstrong would've never gotten anywhere

He lost 3 of his first 4. He'll never be nothing. Time to retire

GGG is not a genius in the art of defense. You shouldn't underestimate the cumulative damage to the brain as a result of thousands of rounds of sparring, 350+ amateur bouts, plus 43 fights as a pro.

Kudos to him for fending off Father Time for so long in this brutal sport, well past the average retirement age of pro boxers.

I am merely concerned for his health. Peace.

Based on current ability no not at all. but thats aging.. based on last 4 years so we dont do a sneaky trickster move and cut the first canelo fight Then i would say he is boarderline.
with fair judging in the 2 canelo fights most people see GGG as 1-0-1. and that vs the current p4p 1 guy might still keep him in the mix.

I get that, but I don't bother calling for people's retirement based on that premise. It's their life, and their health so ultimately their decision. But I do get the concern of fans in that regard.

With all the talk about how bad Golovkin's defense is, how much his brain has been battered around, I had to check the record to see how many times he's been knocked out. It seems my memory is correct, he has not been. It seems even the consensus number one fighter was unable to beat him into submission. How many other top ten fighters have lasted 12 rounds with Canelo? Twice? I see Kovalev on top ten lb for lb lists and he only made it 10 rounds. Not very good arguments here. I don't see how GGG's record is worse then Kovelev or Charlo or Wilder or the other #6-14 fighters. Is Crawford's recent record conclusively better?

If you're seeing Kovalev's record on a P4P list you must be reading a Ring Magazine from like 2016 or something because that ship has sailed a while ago.

Is Crawford's recent record conclusively better? No. But it's better by a hair.

I don't know. He beat Canelo twice but then he slighty lost to Derevyanchenko. He is still good though.

The ESPN p4p is based on votes from 14 boxing 'experts.' GGG received 2 votes for number 10.

I'd say at worst he's top 15 still. To get back into the top 10 he'd have to beat a top fighter, which may not happen as he's celebrating his 39th birthday today I believe.

even if outside of top-ten today, 39 year old Gennady is still doing a great job...in his prime GGG was second to none in his weight class, can hardly be better than that...

canelo would beat him however nelo wanted

might be the 4th best at mw at best, though to his credit he's ttaking on big challenges by facing ring rated opposition even at nearly 40 :yay:
