Sources: Dustin Poirier-Conor McGregor III to be finalized soon for UFC 264 in July

The UFC is moving toward officially booking Dustin Poirier vs. Conor McGregor III for later this year.

According to multiple sources, the trilogy is "close" to being finalized for UFC 264 on July 10. It is not signed yet or fully agreed to, but there is optimism that it could be finalized as soon as this week, sources say.

Poirier defeated McGregor in January via second-round TKO in a rematch of their 2014 fight. Back then, at UFC 178, McGregor defeated Poirier via first-round TKO.

The trilogy, which is expected to be one of the most lucrative in UFC history, is slated to serve as a five-round main event at 155 pounds, just like the rematch was. The original fight took place at 145 pounds.

McGregor (22-5) would be looking to secure his first win since January 2020, while Poirier (27-6, 1 NC) will hope to extend his winning streak to three in a row.

The location for the event hasn't been announced, though it is expected to be open to fans, sources say.

UFC president Dana White said Saturday that the plan is for UFC 264 to be at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, and when asked if Poirier vs. McGregor would be the main event, he said: "I hope so. We all hope so."

I go with Connor in this one after picking Dustin in the last fight. He has to do better or he’s irrelevant and that would kill him

Very close fight, I favor Mcgregor very slightly. He was winning the first round until the calf kicks caught up with him, if he goes back to being lighter on his feet he'll be harder to kick.

i dont really follow mma much, but considering conor's general downward trajectory, and how he just got taken apart by the same opponent, im surprsied to see so many picks for him . what am i missing.

It'll be different this time. I'm rooting for Dustin, but I still think Conor is a real threat. It was the calf kicks that did him in last time. He'll be prepared this time. I can't make a confident pick here. I don't know if I'd say he's on a downward trajectory, just incredibly inactive. He's still better than 99% of the division.

conor doesnt look nearly as confident as he used to in the octagon. getting battered by a guy he previously stopped in 1 prob didnt help with that either. he has the look of a fighter on the slide, even if he was still able to beat everyone's favourite ko victim and the most flattering opponent possible, cowboy

I just think he has to really go for it this time. He’s a dangerous fighter, if he gets a groove he’s hard to beat. He’s not been preparing correctly. If he does he increases his chances.

Dustin is one of my all time favourites in MMA. So to pick against him against my least favourite is tough.

Dustin called Conor out for not following up on his word to donate to his foundation. Conor got embarrassed and says the fight is off! Looking for another opponent. A real piece of work that McGregor...

Great to see someone genuinely get under his skin. Conors responses have been pretty pathetic too.

Fight is still on. It's actually official now. Having some bad blood back between them will make things more interesting this time round. Conor absolutely got in Dustin's head the first fight. Doubt he can do it again, but it should be fun watching him try. The respect thing didn't work out too well for him last outting.

It’s a strange fights to call. Conor having been battered last time and not liking great for years. But you know the UFC would prefer a MacGregor victory.

I feel pretty confident in my pick. I think Dustin is the better fighter. I believe he was probably better skilled than Conor even in their first meeting. But Conor was all in Dustin's head then. I see a competitive 1st round with Dustin coming on around the midpoint of the 2nd scoring a 4th round TKO.

Its a weird one. I prefer this weight for Poirier. But I have a feeling Conor is actually training properly which makes it interesting. Bookies have it even. I'm looking forward to this even though Macgregor has that yesterday feel about him.
