Cory Spinks vs Ricardo Mayorga
Spinks beats Mayorga by MD to unify the World Welterweight division, 2 point deductions for Mayorga costing him a draw, one for hitting after bell in 5th then hitting amd holding in 11th, not a great watch, Spinks the slick southpaw, defensively sound but unwilling to engage, a lot of pot shots from him, Mayorga was a bit wild and launched his attacks from far out, he did have occasional success roughing Spinks up but mostly Spinks ran or held whenever Mayorga got close, not much quality in landed punches from either man but the smoother work of Spinks won on the day

Cory Spinks vs Zab Judah 1+2
Spinks beats Judah by close UD to retain his World Welterweight titles, tough fight to score, not a lot to go on for the majority, 2 southpaws battling to get their jabs off, Spinks was first to get off, he timed his better, Judah had the quicker sharper jab but wasnt using it as much as Spinks was until the middle rounds, it was another chess match and a lot of tough rounds to score where not much quality work landed from either man
Things livened up in the 11th when Judah got sloppy and dropped his hands and Spinks put him down with a little left hand, in the 12th Judah put Spinks down with a big left of his own, much bigger shot than the one he got put down with, Spinks was holding on last 30 seconds but seen it through to win a decision
Judah stops Spinks in round 9 of the rematch to become World Welterweight champion, another cagey start by both men, 2 sharpshooters, crafty leftys, a lot of close rounds early on with not much landed by either man but at end of 7th Judah rocked Spinks with a big left hand just before the bell, Spinks did eventually go down but it was after bell and it wasnt scored, Judah was in the driving seat though and in the 9th he did put Spinks down legit, same left hand hurt him and a follow up barrage had him down for a count, he got up but was still hurt amd hanging on for dear life, Judah was unloading looking for that one big shot and when a left had Spinks crashing into the ropes the ref jumped in

Verno Phillips vs Cory Spinks
Phillips beats Spinks by SD to become World Super Welterweight champion, never scored but a bit of a shocker, in saying that Spinks was shite, he probably picked his shots a bit better, short little counters, Phillips looked more dangerous and landed the eye catching shots, he caught Spinks with some big punches in the 9th, best punches of the fight, totally forgettable fight though, i thought Spinks won but really the fight was that bad no complaints, Phillips wanted it more

Cornelius Bundrage vs Cory Spinks 1+2
Bundrage stops Spinks in the 5th to become World Super Welterweight champion, dominated Spinks really, came out 1st guns blazing, really putting it on Spinks, messy and not much landing but he was making it uncomfortable, Bundrage hurt Spinks in the 2nd with a series of right hands which jolted his head back against the ropes, things quieted down a bit but in the 5th Bundrage backed Spinks on the ropes again and nailed him with the same right hands, this time Spinks crumpled to the canvas, he got up but ref waved it off, maybe a bit quick for my liking TBH
Bundrage stops Spinks in the 7th of the rematch to retain his title, dropped Spinks with a leaping right hand in the 1st and was looking to end things sharpish, things were messy again, Spinks especially guilty of holding but he fiddled his way back into things, Bundrage dropped him with a big right in the 7th though then again with another, Spinks was reeling all over the place hanging on but when he was bundled over for a third time, messy knockdown, it was waved off

Carlos Monzon- Emile Griffith 1
Monzon starts slow. Starts to find his rhythm and range and shows a lovely jab straight right.
Slowly and systematically beats Griffith up.

Erik Morales v Junior Jones
Jones looked the more purposeful from the offset, doubling and tripling his jab before firing the straight right hand, tagging Morales cleanly on a couple of occasions in R1 & R2. Morales kept his composure and began to take over in R3, using the one-two effectively with his slashing right hand finding a home more and more often.
Jones looked to have fatigued a little following his brisk start and in R4 once both men began to trade heavily on the inside Erik managed to drop JJ and didn't let him off the hook, firing a number of power shots to head and body before Larry O'Connell called off the contest. Atmosphere was bouncing in Tijuana!

Re: Classic fights I've watched recently
Marco Antonio Barrera v Kennedy McKinney
Barrera began the fight on the front foot and immediately looked to have hurt McKinney to the body with a rapid combination however Kennedy weathered the storm before beginning to find a smooth rhythm on the outside in the following rounds, pumping the jab and bringing through some belting right hands through & around the guard of MAB.
Barrera was focused on working the body and ripped home hooks at every opportunity but the openings were few and far between through the opening half of the fight as he found a lot of trouble getting past the accurate left hand of McKinney. R6 saw the action begin to really heat up as McKinney abandoned his boxing from range to wade into a firefight, Kennedy showed he can fight on the inside too, making space nicely to crash home powerful hooks in between the relentless output from the Mexican (MAB did stray low quite frequently throughout but avoided a deduction).
The right hand of McKinney would have stopped a lot of fighters on that night, the timing was often impeccable however MAB is a different breed, eating them up like Pac-man. Fatigue began to set in for the 30 Y/O American and Barrera managed the opening breakthrough in R8 after backing up and dropping KM hard in the corner, before scoring a further knockdown seconds later.
McKinney looked fcuked but escaped the round before going down again in R9 - it looked all but over but ridiculous heart from KM saw him rally and seemingly stagger Marco with a booming right cross in R10, who unsurprisingly fought back in dogged fashion. R11 saw MAB get tagged through the middle again while also slipping on the Bud sign, still a KD however. The Bud ad actually floored both men late on, causing havoc
The referee missed a clear knockdown in R12 as McKinney took a crushing left hook to the body but MAB closed the show shortly after - absolutely great entertainment. HBO After Dark got off to a flyer.

Re: Classic fights I've watched recently
Marco Antonio Barrera v Junior Jones 1
Opening round was a tidy one for Junior, used his crisp jab to keep Marco at bay before firing off the right hand up the middle, Barrera closed the distance more effectively in rounds 2 and 3 while finding a home for some vicious body attacks however Jones stood up to them well.
Both men were having success in between some dark arts - rabbit punches, low blows and headbutts all went in from each fighter and the referee struggled to keep a lid on it throughout. It seemed as though despite MAB leaping in to score with the left hook the JJ straight right hand was clearly the most powerful and damaging punch on show, snapping the head of Barrera back several times. The hook which effectively ended the contest was a peach, right on the chin of Barrera just after he'd thrown himself, he managed to beat the count but was stopped against the ropes moments later to mark his first defeat as a pro.

Gene Fullmer- Benny Paret
Fullmer lands the uppercut inside constantly.
Paret was always competitive but manhandled on the inside.
3 months later Paret fought Griffith and lost his life.
I’ve watched and read as much of Paret’s 60/61 as possible.
It’s an absolute joke. Hard, gruelling fight after hard gruelling fight and hardly any rest in between.
To be honest I wish I didn’t as it’s made me angry.
No-one looking out for him as the matchmaking is ludicrous.
In my opinion the 60/61 schedule cost him his life. Unfortunately Griffith was given free reign on a damaged Paret against the ropes but I’m under the belief Paret would of had serious damage going in to it.

Alexis Arguello vs Leonel Hernandez
Arguguello reached his prime by that moment. A great fight. Arguello was methodically pressing forward with jabs and combinations. Hernandez was fighting defensively, moving, weaving, countering. Hernandez was able to take a couple of early rounds, but Arguello took over quite quickly. The 5th round was a slugfest and Alexis got better of it. In the 6th Hernandez was trapped on the ropes and hurt to both head and body. In the 8th he was trapped there again, Arguello blinded him with a series of jabs and then caught Hernandez with a hard right hand. Hernandez was hurt very much, but he managed to get up just to be battered in the corner and stopped, as the ref saved him for the further punishment.

Alexis Arguello vs Royal Kobayashi
A brave effort from Kobayashi, but eventually he was punished for that. Kobayashi wasn't afraid to trade punches with Arguello. The Japanese was scoring some shots early on, but generally Arguello was in control. Yet in at the end of the 4th Kobayashi caught and shook Arguello. He tried to develop the success in the 5th, but Arguello was ready for that. Alexis caught Kobayashi with a one-two, then he sent him down with a series up- and downstairs. The Japanese stood up, but Arguello finished him with a barrage of punches, where the livershot was crucial. Kobayashi was hurt very much by it and failed to beat the count.

Duran-Sims
Close and competitive fight. Duran showed flashes of brilliance but he was way past his best.
Sims showed he had heart but not the quality of his brother.
Great show. Hearns and Graham on the bill and the fight before was McGuigan-Cruz.

Leon Spinks vs Scott LeDoux
Spinks draws with LeDoux over 10 rounds, cracking fight, cant argue with the draw, both men stood in the pocket and traded leather from start to finish, taking turns to land bombs on each other, both men hurt but nobody down and they kept firing back and shifting the scales, surprised there was no rematch it was a cracker

Alexis Arguello vs Ezequiel Sanchez
Arguello pressed the action since the opening bell, but Sanchez was quick on his feet and he was able to counteract Arguello for a while, he landed some good shots early on. Yet Arguallo finally took over and got to Sanchez. In the 4th round Alexis was very aggressive and sharp. He sent Sanchez down, after what he was unleashing vicious combinations. Sanchez was wobbly, but he was able to last until the end of the round, where he was dropped again. He got up and the bell saved him, but he was forced to retire in the corner.

Alexis Arguello vs Alfredo Escalera I
A good bout. Arguello controlled the vast majority of the fight since the 2nd round, when Escalera suffered a flash knockdown. Yet it was a competetive affair. Escalera even began to win rounds later in the fight, but he was cut, the fight was stopped because of it in the 13th.

Gerrie Coetzee vs Leon Spinks
Coetzee TKOs Spinks in 1 round of a non title fight, Spinks came out firing trying to back Coetzee up but Coetzee caught him with a right hand and his legs just collapsed from under him, didn't evem look a big shot, Spinks got up but his legs were still shaky and Coetzee had him down again after landing some clubbing rights, again Spinks got up on wobbly legs but two big rights send him down and crashing through the ropes where it was stopped

Salvador Sanchez vs Wilfredo Gomez - fcuk me, can never tire of these legends. The heart of Gomez to even get out of the first round was truly ridiculous. Sanchez was so good.
Re: Classic fights I've watched recently
As the Conor Benn fight ended prematurely on Saturday, I decided to watch a couple of his old man's fights.
Nigel Benn v Lou Gent
This was interesting in that the crowd were pro Gent. However, after a fairly even first couple of rounds, Benn showed his class and put Gent down three times in the third before finishing him off in the fourth. It was never likely to be a close match and come the finish, Gent looked well out of his depth.
Nigel Benn v Dan Sherry
I remember Sherry giving Eubank all sorts of problems, so I thought I'd take a look at how Benn handled him. As above there wasn't much in the first two rounds but Benn came on strong in the third round and finished it with a right hand just before the end of the round.
Benn never looked troubled but what I did notice was that Sherry always seemed to mess about by turning Ben around. Wasn't this the reason Eubank ended up backward headbutting him?!

Those bitter rivals Benn-Eubank had a fair few opponents in common and the results rarely followed any pattern.
When Benn just fancied it he immediately reached for the bazooka.
He just had a brief look at Sherry - who was a good-ish stylist - but not a nightmare and duly stepped-in.
Eubank - always prone to fiddling about and some massively infuriating coasting when not threatened - made fighting Sherry look much more like hard work than it needed to be.
To be fair to Eubank he faced Sherry first and Benn got him after he had lost to Otis Grant as well.
Benn made super-quick work of opponents Eubank might have taken many a very dull-dull round to box. Conversely Eubank beat Mike Watson twice on the turn in world title fights and Mike beat Nigel with something to spare.
Trying to find any real yardstick fight is hard....but it actually might be Henry Wharton. Remember him

Alexis Arguello vs Rey Tam
Tam provided a brave effort of pushing forward and trying to make it a fight, but it was a suicidal plan. Arguello was outfighting Tam and in the 5th round Alexis hurt Tam with a hard left hook - right uppercut combo, after which Tam didn't take a lot of time on deciding that it was enough for him.

Carlos DeLeon vs Leon Spinks
DeLeon stops Spinks after 6 rounds of a non title Cruiserweight fight, another fast start from Spinks, no problem backing DeLeon up and battering away to head and body, DeLeon too passive early on but around the 5th he turned the tables hitting and hurting Spinks with sharp jabs and quickfire combinations, Spinks was busted up and after 6 rounds he was retired on his stool

Alexis Arguello vs Alfredo Escalera II
A repetition of their first fight in a more brutal fashion. Arguello started better, yet this time he knocked Escalera down early on not a one time, but two, plus Escalera was also given a standing 8-count. Escalera was cut again and he bounced back in the mid rounds, causing a cut on Arguello. Eventually Alexis re-established the control and stopped Escalera again in the 13th round, but this time with a legit KO. Arguello knocked Escalera out with a left hook.
